Sloppy Joes

Sloppy joes, taverns, BBQ....whatever you want to call them...I need some help. Does anyone have a favorite recipe? Can I use 1/2 and 1/2 ground turkey with ground beef to make them slightly less "bad"? I can just grab some Manwich, but that is really not my favorite, but I've got to make them for about 35 people in 2 weeks, so I'm asking for your help. Thanks!

You can sub in the meat:

Per 6 - 8 servings you need:

1 lb. ground beef
1 can Campbells Chicken Gumbo Soup
1 small can Contadina tomato paste
1 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste

Brown ground beef. Combine all ingredients in a slow-cooker or large pan. This is best if it is allowed to cook all day in the slow cooker. Or, cook and combine and let sit overnight, then warm before serving.

I recently made this for a group of 35. I used a 5 lb chub of ground beef and corresponding amounts of the other ingredients. It filled one large and one small slow-cooker. There was plenty for everyone.

p.s. As you can tell, this is one of those recipe's from the 1950's when convenience foods were the big thing...with the canned ingredients here being the convenience. I grew up with this recipe...and have never found one I prefer. One thing I love about it is that it includes the veggies from the soup...making it a bit healthier and waaay tastier than recipes that just use mustard and catsup!

I'll type out my recipe. I brown the meat 1/2 90%fat free ground beef 1/2 ground turkey breast, with onion and a few big shakes or worcheshire sauce. Once browned, I drain any grease.

In the pan I add one small jars of ketchup, a few teaspoons of yellow mustard, a little bit of garlic powder, a tablespoon or two of brown sugar, and water. Mix and cook until it thickens.

Quick, easy, and very inexpensive.

I love this recipe and have never used Manwich again after trying this one.

1 lb. ground turkey or ground beef or half and half
chopped onions to taste
1 can tomato soup
1 tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. yellow mustard
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. vinegar

Brown the meat with the onion. I use about 1/2 large onion. Drain meat. Add all the rest of the ingredients and simmer for about 15 minutes. Serve on your favorite buns. Delicious!

I always use ground turkey breast for Sloppy Joes. Season with salt, pepper, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and spicy mustard to taste. This is a recipe I got from the Budget Board. Since I started making it this way, we can't stand Manwich or any other brand of Sloppy Joe seasoning mix. I don't measure anything, just squirt and sprinkle until it looks right, and adjust to taste. Much, much better than the canned stuff. :)

This is similar to what I use. I add celery at the same time as onion and minus the sugar and vinegar.

Browned ground beef/turkey, chili sauce (the kind in a bottle sold by the cocktail sauce), worcestershire, dill relish, chopped celery. All to taste.
Works perfectly in the slow cooker for a large group. I buy whatever brand of chili sauce is on sale.

Thanks, everyone! I've done the chicken gumbo recipe before, and the last 2 times there were hard chunks in it that I couldn't identify, so I'm a little scared of that....

I also have issues with crunchy things in my sloppy joes, but I think I'll have to get over it and cook with some onions-maybe I'll puree them in my blender first. I really like the flavor, just hate it when they squeak in my teeth.

Thanks for the reassurance that I can sub some ground turkey. I don't worry about these things for my own crew, but when you are cooking for a bunch it takes some more thought!

I really don't have a recipe....but I use hamburger, sryup, brown sugar and BBQ sauce.....it is very tasty!;)

I take a 1 1/2# ground beef or turkey or combo Brown it in a pan drain & I rinse the add on bottle of Chili Sauce(like Heinz) & a can of Campbells French onion soup. Cover about 15 mins or put in the crockpot.

I use the McCormick packets. you just add tomato paste and water.

I do this too. I can't stand Manwich and even if I make them "from scratch," they aren't as good as the McCormick packet!!!

I also make my sloppy joes using chili sauce (bottle), ketchup and brown sugar to taste. When I don't know what to make its a sloppy joes night! :)

This is very much like the recipe that I grew up with and still make for my family. I have started using ground turkey instead of beef.
1 lb. grnd beef or turkey
1 can Campbell's Chicken Gumbo Soup
1 dollop (about 2 TBsp) mustard
1 dollop ketchup
1 dollop brown sugar
Brown the meat then add the other ingredients and let it simmer.

My son loves this meal so much that it is now called "Messy Nathan's" at our house instead of sloppy joes.
