Disney World pulls plug on Grad Nite
1:56 p.m. EST, March 9, 2011

This spring will see the last Grad Nite celebrations at Magic Kingdom, it was announced on the Disney Parks Blog on Wednesday.

Disney World says the increase in theme park attendance in the spring has made scheduling the after-hours, separate-ticket event for high school seniors, increasingly difficult. As an alternative, Disney will offer Florida school groups a special one-day, one-park ticket for $55 that's valid any time during the year.

Live performances have been a hallmark of the event, which dates back to the 1970s. Musical acts have included Britney Spears, Miami Sound Machine, Katy Perry, Oingo Boingo, Ne-Yo, New Kids on the Block, Paramore and Boys Like Girls. Set for the 2011 and final version of Grad Nite are Taio Cruz, 3OH!3 and Pauly D from "Jersey Shore."

I am going to be there during that week.. and avoiding MK on the weekend.. and just so you know.. Pauly D had to cancel he will be in Italy filming another season of Jersey Shore!

They're probably expecting increased crowds next year due to the DCA rebuild and a hopefully improving economy. Only so much room in DL and a gangbuster year would probably make them rethink some things...

I'm not sure how much of an effect a redone Disney California Adventure will really have on the Magic Kingdom in Florida...

:)

And they still plan to hold Grad Nights at DL in the future as well...

LOL, I have DL on the brain. Planning a trip and was trying to avoid the grad nights.

I am glad they are scaling back on grad nights. Earlier closing times, albeit not in a peak period, are a hindrance to guests who are not local, regular visitors. Also, from what I have heard from recent grad night attendees here in DL, it is usually very packed and ridden with behavior problems. Although that may appeal to teenagers, I wouldn't find it very entertaining.

Yep, and let me tell you they are not much fun to work at either.

Yea, a lot of problems with unsupervised teenagers over the years. Glad to see it go. At least during normal times in the parks, the "problem" kids are spread out over a larger area, and not as noticeable..............except during cheerleader times.:confused3

Well that's good news... saving America's youth from the stupidity of the Jersey Shore cast members. I've heard meeting one in person kills the same number of brain cells as a few nights of drinking.

maybe disney will realise from this how many normal guests avoid wdw at these times now?

I know disney make a lot from pop warner etc, but is it really enough to cover the dip in hotel occupancy and park attendance from regular guests with so many avoiding those times of year?:confused3

they are considered the worst after-hours event as far as front-line Cast Members are concerned.

Couldn't agree more with that statement.

Give me Brazilian tour groups any day over working one of those nights.

I bet more kids are conceived at Nights of Joy than in the whole of NYC on New Years Eve.
