My cell phone carrier is AT&T. I have a plan for about $52.00 a month for unlimited texting. But the minutes are I think 400 weekday with free weekend. No internet. (hope I have that right). I was thinking about getting an ipod touch 32mb 4th generation. My daughter who has a Droid with all the bells and whistles. She was telling me I should get a new phone/plan instead. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Does anyone have this type plan with AT&T. Hers is with Verizon so I didn't really think I could compare. My thought was that all the bells and whistles on a new phone would cost alot more than the $274 I have seen the Ipod for.

Thanks

Check out VirginMobile they have a droid phone the Optimus V that has unlimited data and text with 300 minutes for 25 a month.

The phone is 129 with $20 gift card at Target this week. It runs off of sprint so if you have good sprint coverage then you will have VM coverage.

I got rid of two iPhones and got two droids and saved around 85 a month.

Me and my wife both have iphones wth A&TT they are great and we could not live without them, but it's going to cost you about $90.00 a month is my guess for service.

Question: How Much Does an iPhone Cost to Buy and Use?

Answer: Looking for information about the new iPhone 4, instead? Read How Much Does the iPhone 4 Cost?.
Wondering how much you'll pay to get a shiny new iPhone 3G? The price of the iPhone really depends on two factors: The price of the phone itself, plus the service fee you pay every month to AT&T. Here's a complete list of all the costs associated with buying and owning an iPhone 3G.
THE PHONE ITSELF
The iPhone 3G is available from four authorized retailers: Apple, AT&T, Best Buy, and Walmart. All of them, except Walmart, charge the same price for the various iPhone models. (Walmart's prices are $2 cheaper.) All of these prices require that you sign a new two-year service contract with AT&T; existing AT&T customers who are eligible for an upgrade will get these prices, too.
8GB iPhone 3G (Black): $199
16GB iPhone 3G (Black): $299
16GB iPhone 3G (White): $299
AT&T subscribers who are not yet eligible for a handset upgrade will be charged the following prices:
8GB iPhone 3G (Black): $399
16GB iPhone 3G (Black): $499
16GB iPhone 3G (White): $499
All existing AT&T customers will be charged an upgrade fee of $18, whether or not they are eligible for the discounted prices.
MONTHLY SERVICE
When purchasing an iPhone 3G, you'll need a voice plan, a data plan, and a text messaging plan in order to use the phone. Here's how much you can expect to pay for your monthly service:
Data
Unlimited Data Plan: $30 per month
This is a requirement; AT&T does not offer another data plan for the iPhone 3G.
Voice Plans
AT&T offers a choice of voice plans for the iPhone 3G. All offer a certain number of nationwide calling minutes, and all offer free calling to other AT&T mobile phones.
$99.99 per month: Unlimited voice minutes
$79.99 per month: 1350 voice minutes
$59.99 per month: 900 voice minutes
$39.99 per month: 450 voice minutes
All of the plans (except the unlimited plan) include rollover minutes, which allow you to save unused voice minutes and apply them to your next bill should you go over your allotment. Additional minutes cost between 35 cents and 45 cents per minute, depending on your plan.
Most of the plans offer unlimited free night (9pm to 6am) and weekend calling; the only one that doesn't is the plan with 450 minutes, which limits you to 5000 night and weekend minutes.
All of the plans also require that you pay a one-time activation fee of $36 to set up the line.
Text Plans
The first-generation iPhone did not require you to pay for a text plans; all text messages sent and received were included as part of the unlimited data plan. That's no longer the case. If you plan on using your iPhone 3G to send text messages, you'll want a text plan. Here are the options.
$20 per month: Unlimited Texting
$15 per month: 1500 text messages (sent or received); 5 cents for each additional message
$5 per month: 200 text messages (sent or received); 10 cents for each additional message
Without a plan, you'll be charged 20 cents for each text message you send or receive.

How many minutes of talk are included with this plan?

Unlimited data. I can't even imagine. We pay 55 a month for free evenings and weekends, unlimited text, and 200 anytime minutes with 1GB of data. I loathe Canadian cell phone companies:headache:

Ok.. I'll stop OT complaining in this thread now:flower3:

Actually, ATT no longer offers unlimited data for new subscribers. They offer Data Plus with 200 MB of data for $15/month or
Data Pro with 2 GB of data for $25/month. This means that the internet access on the iphone can be as low as $15 per month per phone. -- Suzanne

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my daughter was just mentioning the Optimus V yesterday, with the 25 Virgin Mobile plan. I have the Optimus S wth Sprint, and love it. Her birthday is in 4 months. Should I grab this phone from Target this week, or do you think I can get a better price in 4 months?

Its hard to tell, I bought it last week for 149 and price matched it for this deal. I was off contract and didnt want to sign another so this was a good fit.

You could always buy it now and not activate it for 4 months or wait and see if it drops more. I dont see how much more it could drop tho

Just a quick note I haven't seen posted, the iTouch needs a WiFi connection to go online so unless you've got one you can't go online wherever you are. For instance, I have the Droid X thru Verizon, DBF has a feature phone with NO internet plan, but he has an iTouch. Last night at dinner with friends I was able to go online with no problems, he was not because the restaurant had NO open WiFi. So just something to remember. :)

I think AT&T is offering the 8gb 3GS for $49 right now. Then you would just have the monthly service. Try calling AT&T and see what they will do for you.

It is the bolded part that keeps me from getting it! That "just" monthly service runs way too high for me!

I have over 1300 songs on my android phone. I see no reason to carry around 2 devices. I also use the Nook feature feature to read so my Nook stays at home, too.

Okay going against the everyone and say do not need a smartphone from ATT. You have quick messaging phone and get unlimited data plan. Yes you can get too. Just because everyone has a smartphone does not mean have have too.

I have a LG Prime have unlimited data, use google number to text for free. I have music, ebooks, games and much more. I love my plan because minutes and unlimited data my phone. I like a phone to have java on my phones.

ATT have some real nice quick messaging phone. Just go on ATT site and click on quick messaging phones pick out one like.

I know my is prepaid phone but I am on contract. I have not renew my contract in years. I buy most my phone from amazon or ebay now.

So this can be a hotspot too? Wow, how can they offer it for this little?

Is there a contract? How much is tax? 12%?

Dawn

No contract you can cancel whenever you like, theres no tax if you buy the cards from a place like callingmart.com
