My ing account was stolen from :sad2:

:sad2:So I have an ing savings account for each of my kids. Not huge amounts of money in each, but I'm making an effort. I received two Transfer Money Notices this morning--one for $1000 and one for $500--that were not initiated by me. This almost wipes out the account. The ing offices don't open until 8 (and they don't specify which time-zone). Ugh. I believe they're insured?! Has this happened to anyone else? How could this happen? I like that they're interest rates are a little better than other places and, up til now, felt completely comfortable with saving with them. Not so much anymore.

Sounds like it may be a stolen id issue. I haven't had this happen with ING but with my on line banking account. I was so mad because it was my fault (I clicked on one of those phoney links) and I absolutely know better.

Anyway, my bank was insured so I got the funds back and I believe ING is also (other dissers please chime in, I'm not 100% sure).

After my experience I still feel comfortable with them. remember it's not ING, it's criminals and like criminals every where they will search out any and all opportunities. The experience has just made me very diligent when I'm on line. whether it's banking or shopping or using social networks.

We have used ING since 2002..............for us and our daughter. We have not had any problems. I know things are frustrating, but I am confident they will take care of you. Good luck on your phone calls this morning.

I'm so sorry this happened. We've had an ING account since 1999 with no problems, thankfully. ING is FDIC insured and they are based in Delaware so east coast time zone and should be open in a few minutes.

I just logged on and checked our accounts and they are okay. Good luck with yours and let us know how it goes.

Can I just get on my soapbox for a moment and say....Thieves, try getting a job. Go to work and earn an honest living. Stealing from a child's savings account is pathetic. On judgment day, I hope all you thieves are met with the justice you've earned and have coming to you. Shameful, absolutely shameful.

Rant over.

I find this hard to believe (not in the sense that I'm doubting the OP, just in a "wow" kind of sense). ING has some of the best security from a bank I've ever seen. They make you enter your customer no, then your pin (which they recently expanded from 4 digits to 8), and then answer 2 security questions. For some ID thief to get all of that, that's pretty impressive.

I doubt it was done online then. It was either an "inside job" or a mistake -- someone entered the wrong routing and account number for some other transaction. You'll get it sorted out.

Never happen to me.But a good thing is you got the notice and it take 2 business days from the notice for the transfer to be done..So they money should still be there.
Good Luck !! I really hate people some times.

I have my customer number saved, enter my pin, and I am in my account without answering any other questions.

That said I don't think that is how thieves get into these accounts - sadly I think their methods are more sinnister.

To the OP, I would feel confident this will get sorted out. Let us know.

yeah sounds like someone the account info got stolen. you need to change your password ASAP and run some kind of virus scan on your computer.

Are you SURE the emails are legit - and not one that was trying to get you to panic and click through to enter your pin????

Also just go directly to the ING website (don't click thru any email links) and log into your account. That email they sent is notifying you that it will happen. You can always go and cancel the transfer request. You should also go and change your passwords.

That's what I was thinking. Did you log into your account (NOT using any links in any notices you got) and actually see what's happening? If all you got was a notice of a pending funds transfer, it "could" be a scam fishing for your info.

Hopefully all will be resolved soon to your satisfaction. Keep us posted!

I recently had someone make charges against a cc account which I never use, have never even authorized the account. I was told that they have random number generators that they run until they hit the jackpot. This may be what happened to you. No matter what I'm sorry this happened. I hope they make this right for you. I'd also request that they change your account numbers.

A little OT but I use free AOL and I received 2 emails stating I had to update my billing info (so that was a clue immediately). However, I did open the emails at work, and we have pretty strong firewalls...I could not open them because of "explicit content"! :scared1: Theives will try any way they can (yes, I know, I shouldn't have opened the emails to begin with).

Be aware of phishing scams. Do not open any links, go to the ING website and log in. If there are pending transfers, cancel them and call ING to have your account number changed immediately.

Good luck!

::off to check my ING account now::

Thanks everyone. We've had the accounts for five or six years too and had no problems up until today. I did call at 8:00 ET and was able to get through. The gal said it was probably someone transferring funds and mistyped the account number--not actually accessing my account online. (I asked about that because I frequently have trouble getting past all the security questions.) She's sending me a form via their website (which could take up to 1 day) to fill out and return, then they'll process it (which could take another day) and return my money and contact the third party (who is BOEING EMP CU). I don't have any of my info registered on the computers to remember me when I sign in, and have not clicked through any links in emails. I'm going to chalk this one up to an innocent error (which is hard to swallow because of the amount of money involved, and that two separate transactions occurred). I'm thinking about changing the accounts to my main bank though.

ING Direct is headquarted in Wilmington, Delaware, meaning they are on Eastern Time.

Ugh. I believe they're insured?!

Yes, ING is an FDIC-insured institution (Certificate # 35489), but that usually doesn't apply to situations such as yours (the FDIC comes into play in the event the bank becomes insolvent and is danger of failing).

I wanted to type this right after you posted, but i was rushing out the door. this happens a lot in 'banking'.

sometimes 'extra' money shows up in our accounts and sometimes 'less'

it's administrative erros as usual. GOOD THOUGHT TO WATCH ALL THE ACCOUNTS carefull. you never know.

Moving banks won't really get you any more protection. These kinds of errors happen frequently and can happen at any bank or credit union. It's a simple matter of the person on the other end providing the wrong number or someone typing it wrong. Happens all the time.

Unless your bank pays better interest rates, you might as well stay with ING. This isn't their fault and they are resolving it for you, so they're doing what they're supposed to.
