We finally took the plunge and just did it! That's another $80 in our wallets for Disney!!!!

I am thinking about that too.... With Hulu and other programs out there, why keep it?!

Friday is our last day for our Directv so we will be right there with you.

well,I am thinking about this too- we have Dish, and just lost 2 local ABC channels due to pricing- not pleased, since we mostly watch network shows......am thinking about rooftop antenna options

We were considering doing this or switching companies. I called our provider and they discounted our bill $35 for the next six months and the $10 for another 6 months. They also upgraded our internet. So we will stick with it for now.

We were in the same boat - really only watched network shows - so we canceled cable & got a converter box and set-top antenna. (We live in an apt building so can't install a roof antenna.) It works fine for us. We can pick up all the major networks - ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX - plus several local channels that sometimes have interesting programming. The only thing we don't get that I wish we did is PBS. One of these days I might get around to figuring out why that is & find a fix for it. If we miss a show when it airs on TV, we just watch it on the network's website or on Hulu. Most of them post the new episodes the day after it airs on TV.

Congrats!!! we canceled back in December and were prepared to have no tv until we got a antennae and whatnot but were presently surprised to find out that with just the cable line hooked up but no cable we get about 20 free channels that are crystal clear and keep the 70.00 a month we were paying :) The 70.00 deal was set to expire in July so the package would have gone up to about 120.00 a month!

Congrats!! We've done that before on and off for a total of about a year and a half.

I wish we could do it now. But my 11 year old son is REALLY into sports now so he and my DH get a lot of enjoyment out of watching together. Unfortunately, many games (all sports) are on ESPN channels or other ones that we don't get even if I cut to basic cable. If not for that, I'd cancel tomorrow.

I actually think it's better for your kids, along with your wallet, to nix the cable. :)

Us too! We're ordering the Roku and getting rid of Dish by the end of the month. Even with a Netflix subscription, we'll be saving close to $90 a month. Crazy!

Is it possible you are getting free cable and they forgot to disconnect you?

Unfortunately, we don't get ANY channels that way and will have to go with a rooftop or attic antenna, which we still aren't sure will work. I need to buy one that can be returned if it doesn't work!

Our DTV contract ends in April and I plan to cancel May 2nd as we leave for our Disney vacation. If they offer me a great deal after canceling then, I may reconsider, but at this point, we too would like the extra $85 in our pockets. It would pay for a base line Apple computer desktop we want to purchase!

Looks like I am in great company! DH and I never watch cable TV and neither does DD15. DS10 doesn't either - only DS4 does - Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and other Disney Junior shows. But guess what? We can find that online on the Disney website for only the cost of internet! So it's Netflix all the way for us - we all enjoy that, although DS4 hogs the TV with his dinosaur documentaries. :lmao:

Yeah, we realized last year that we were paying for 200 channels that we never watched. We cancelled the cable and now just pay $20/month for internet plus $8/month for NetFlix.

How are you getting $20/mo for internet? Ours is $39/mo.

I wish my husband would agree to this.
We're paying about $90 a month right now and it seems like every night we end up watching House re-runs and Pawn Stars. As I love and admire Rick and Chumlee, I'm not convinced they are worth $90 a month.

I've hooked an old laptop up to the TV upstairs and have been trying to demonstrate the joys of streaming. The family doesn't seem convinced though.

I was just coming to post this - JUST dropped off my cable boxes to Time Warner TODAY! We've been seriously discussing it since December....We have Netflix and we bought a very nice rooftop antenna. I only downgraded to basic for right now, however, because dh can't get the antenna on the roof until the snow is gone. So I'll shell out $12 a month for the next two or so months until he can do that.

We get our phone thru cable too - so our bill went from $106 to $46 with phone and the basic channels. That's $60 extra a month - another $12 on top of that in 2 months when we get rid of basic.

We need to invest in a PC to attach to the TV...we have used our laptops and done it here and there - but it will be better with a dedicated machine. I'm hoping since the cable is GONE it'll kick dh in the butt to get this part of it done. Oh yeah - I need to go to the library today - I'm getting a bunch of DVD's so the kids have plenty of options to watch!

AT&T DSL. We signed up for $19.95/month for 6mbps. That is good for 12 months. I'm sure after that time the price will go up. Hopefully, when that happens I'll be able to find another ISP with a similar price special.

A lot of the Blu-Ray players stream Netflix and so do video game systems. DS10 streams Netflix through his Wii and we use the XBox 360 or the Blu-Ray in the living room. The Blu-Ray player is cheaper than a PC. Or you might look at getting a netbook - I haven't tried hooking ours up yet, but I do want to experiment with it soon. Again, a lot less expensive than a PC, and more portable too. We have three and just love them. Comes in handy when DS4 hogs the PC (there he goes hogging stuff again!) but we want to browse or check email.

We have a roku box and it is set up wireless through our att box. We have netflix and hulu plus. It is about 20 a month. Just get the best roku box which is a little investment. You can also get netflix through wii and other gaming devices.

I know dumb question, but what exactly is ROKU again? Does it take the place of the cable tv channels? Thank you! Brunette
