Stroller for child with autism.

I've talked my friends into going to Disney with us in May! I told her I would ask your advice. Her son, like mine has autism. We have a Baby Planet stroller, but her son's a little wider/taller and wasn't as comfy in it, although he did like the big hood. He is probably 55 pounds and is a small 8yo. My son is 7 and 45 lbs. Anyway...she is thinking about either a Baby Jogger Elite or a Bob stroller. I know you can rent, but if we get year passes she can sell it later and probably get her pretty good resale off of both of these.

Anyone have experience with these, or have another better idea?

Hi! Our son DS3 has autism and we are in the process of working with our insurance carrier to procure a Maclaren Elite for him. He is pretty tall and we were wanting something that would last him a while. I have read here on these boards and other places that this is a really nice stroller for people with special needs, it goes up to 150lbs. I have also read that the Maclaren's in the stores are also very nice, but I don't know the weight limit on those.

Good luck and have fun!

Their ins. doesn't want to pay, with Tricare (military) if you are retired you don't qualify for that type of stuff like you do when you are active duty.

I also wonder if the jogging strollers would be easier to push than the umbrella type stroller. Even with my 45 lb son in ours it can be a workout.

I got my son's MacLaren Major Elite on ebay-- new in the box & about 100 bucks less than retail price. The Maclaren Major is also one of the less expensive special needs strollers out there, if it will work for your kid, as it is not really adjustable at all. It does have larger wheels than a regular little kid stroller, but not so large as jogging strollers wheels.

I also have a Baby Jogger City Classic Double for my twins, (similar to the Elite) My tall & skinny, 50 lb 7 1/2 year old can fit in it, but it's not so comfy that he would do it for longer than a short stretch, back to the car, etc. So that may not be the best stroller for a bigger kid.

I know Orlando Stroller Rentals rents a special needs joggging type stroller, that might be something to look into.

Thanks for your reply! There is actually a MacLaren Major on craigslist here in our tiny town for $265...so maybe its meant to be!

We are wondering if there wouldn't be enough leg room in the Baby Jogger.

We used to have a MacLaren Major for our son - can highly recommend them.
