Nachi-Cocum for kids?

For anyone who has gone in the past, is it worth it to take kids? DS's are 2 and 5. I am looking forward to a quiet day of fun in the sun with a limited number of people around. DH and I are definately beach people but this is the first time the kids will be at a "real' beach.

How is the food for kids?

TIA!!

You have definitely picked the right spot for quiet with a limited number of people around. I have been twice in the span of a year and a half - both times VERY quiet, awesome service, wonderful thatched umbrellas, nice chairs, beautiful sand. The swimming is great, but gets over 4' pretty quick. The food is straight tex-mex - nachos, quesadillas, guacamole, queso, etc. They also have a nice pool, but we didn't get in. The ocean was too nice. Don't get the mixed drinks - stay with beer. (too watered down)

more info than you asked for, but I loved that place.

For what it's worth, I haven't been yet but did quite a bit of checking before reserving for us & our 3 year old. The only downside I found for kids was that the water drops off from shallow to deep rather quickly, but everything else was a positive for the little ones.

I'm not too worried about the water as we would obviously be with him there and there is also a pool we can make use of if we decide the water is too much for him.

Besides the obvious wedding day and kids being born thing, Nachi Cocum was the best day of my life!! Go there!

We went when DD had just turned 3, and DS was 5 last December. Because they are so young, we picked it partially because they also have a pool, which also has a great little shallow area where the 2yr old can sit and splash, while you lounge in the deeper water right next to her.

For a few extra bucks you can rent a float. We did, and I used it to transport DD or DS out into the water a bit. Didn't have any problems going out as far as I could stand comfortably. Also doubled as a mat for the sand, and you can use it in the pool too!

Thank you for the input! I am going to reserve our space as I just got email that they still have room. The next three weeks cannot go quick enough!!

Please report back how your day goes. We won't be there until early April so I'll be very interested in your experience!

I love your post! :lovestruc We have been to Nachi Cocom twice now...and it is definitely my crews favorite port/beach stop. :thumbsup2 As far as drinks...we ordered a bunch of mixed drinks and they were not watered down...could have been a different bartender than the PP had...also you can ask for a double shot in the drink...Funny thing...I asked if they had the wine coolers Smirnoff Ice...and the waiter said yes...he came back with their usual clear plastic cup full of a clear liquid. I didn't think twice about it...because the wine coolers are clear in color...took a drink...and yep...it was pure Smirnoff Vodka on Ice! :rotfl: We got a good laugh out of it! IMO...they are not skimpy on the use of the alcohol. Anyhow...we love it at Nachi Cocom! Oh, and as far as the ocean and the drop off...keep in mind...it all depends on the ocean...the entry into the water is always changing. When we were there the first time...it had a drop off...the second time...you could walk a long way out. It just all depends...

Have a blast at Nachi! :cool2:

My experience with the alcohol in the mixed drinks was definitely more in line with Crystal's experience than the prior poster's experience quoted at the top. I went in expecting watered down drinks, since they are included in the price and unlimited, and based on our experience at beaches in other ports. What my friend and I both got in our pina coladas were consistently some the best pina colada's I've had, that definitely weren't light on the rum.

I just have to add...we were at Nachi for Christmas Day of 2009 with my husband's entire family. Now some of these folks...his dad...are very conservative...but by the end of the day at Nachi...they were ripped! :upsidedow Apparently they got into doing shots...and all that I could see was my conservative father-in-law...coming down the cabin hallway on the ship...knocking on everyone's door and shouting "Merry Christmas!" No lack of alcohol there! :goodvibes

Nachi Cocom Rocks! :thumbsup2

Went to Nachi last week. The weather was terrible. THey charge $6US for towels on top of your resort fee. The power was out so no running water. The staff were unhelpful and rude. If you want to go to drink as much as you want, its probably a great package. But the website looks beautiful and in my opinion the place is a dump and a waste of money and they want every cent extra from you. As we arrive they give you these Sombrearos to wear and take a picture. I asked the lady could she use my camera and take a picture for me and she replied no, if I wanted a copy of the picture I would have to purchase it. The property is very run down, even as you drive in it is a mess. Seriously stayed for 50mins and went back to the ship. No refund. Just put it down to a bad experience. Don't waste your time or money. We had 3 adults and 2 kids 5yrs and 3yrs in our party.

My family and another family booked this a couple of months ago for our Feb 5th Western. We are hoping it will be a positive experience. The vast majority of people over at CruiseCritic.com and Trip Advisor website gave it positive and very positive reviews.

On the other side of the coin, just look at pics of the places the Cruise Ships normally excursion to...you will be packed in like sardines side by side and front and back (Playa Mia beach comes to mind). I think I will take my chances at Nachi Cocom.

Remember, this is a local spot not sanitized and Disneyized to the DCL standards. It can't be any worse than Cruise ship beach excursions, especially since the port load in Cozumel when we will be there will be 18,500 people.

Cinderelliana, It must have *really* riled you since you show only 1 post to pick this particular thread to comment on. Sorry to hear you had such a bad time, I am sure crappy weather didn't help either.

I will admit, that first impressions of Nachi Cocom aren't flashy. You take a taxi there, passing all the other beaches that you've read about (if you've researched the port at all), and the taxi pulls up at a little gate where they buzz you in. You don't see much when the taxi drops you off, and the first thing you do see is the lady with the sombreros who wants you to wear one and have your picture taken. By this point, you're probably thinking "did I make the right decision?" Then you proceed in to the register where they collect the rest of your money (in cash), and you feel a bit better because they had your name on the list. They then take you to your seats for the day, and your waiter runs over, introduces himself, and takes your first drink order.

Once you sit down and look around, we were very happy to find the beach uncrowded, but wondered if it would fill up later in the day. It didn't. Then we headed out into the ocean, and enjoyed the water, and the gentle surf that wasn't too strong for the kids. We used a float in the water and on the beach, the kids played in the sand with the sand toys we brought, and everyone had a great morning. Our lunch was great, and after lunch we took advantage of the pool which was one of my favorite parts. Once on the beach, or in the pool, our first impressions were greatly overshadowed by how beautiful it was and how much we all enjoyed ourselves.

We did pay to rent a float, and we did purchase the picture, and we did tip our waiter. But we still paid less than we would have with DCL for a much more crowded experience without the beverages and the pool.

We were there in November (on an RCCL cruise without the kids) but I wouldn't hesitate to take them back there sometime. Beautiful, quiet spot, and the food was actually pretty decent - DH loved the ribs. We booked in advance and it was officially "sold out" that day, yet it felt completely empty. There were not a lot of kids there, and there were a few people who'd obviously consumed quite a bit, but it wasn't a wild party atmosphere either... Cozumel is not my favourite port, but a day at Nachi made it worth it :)

Well, they can't control mother nature.

All of these things are no secret-I've read similar on numerous posts here & at Cruise Critic. Further, everyone takes the "tourist" pictures to sell you-even the cruise line, were you offended by them doing it as well? I always think of it as just one of those things that happens on a cruise (both on & off the ship).

The power was out so no running water...The staff were unhelpful and rude...stayed for 50mins and went back to the ship. No refund.

The power outage is unfortunate, but likely beyond their control. I'm sure it was frustrating, but it sounds like you didn't even hang around long enough to give the place a chance. For $50 a person, even being non-drinkers, I still think it's a huge bargain for a nice, non-crowded beach day. As for the refund, their policy is made very clear when you book so you shouldn't have expected one when you chose to leave.

I'm a bit perplexed about your post as I've read nothing but rave reviews about Nachi Cocum, yet you seem to have had a completely alternate experience. Could you please elaborate on what/how you thought it was run down (other than the entrance)? I have reservations for April and if the place has had a major turn for the worse, I'd like to know about it now.

Sorry you didn't like it. I noticed that was your first post...perhaps if you had found this Board or Cruise Critic prior to your cruise, you would have been more well prepared for what to expect. Now that you've here, you can do your homework next time and let the very knowledgeable people here help you make for a more positive experience!

We have been there twice...it is excellent! :thumbsup2 And we purchased the picture with the sombrero both times! :cool2: And yes, we have experienced another beach resort on Cozumel - Playa Mia...and it was totally packed...and almost as expensive...and it too looks run-down on the drive up. That's just Cozumel! :upsidedow

As far as weather...can't control that.
As far as the electricity...you just have to make the best of it.
As far as the beach towels...no where does it state that they would be provided.
As far as the staff being rude...I can't answer that one...but I know from my own experience...the staff were awesome!

Anyhow...I can't say enough good things about Nachi. I'd love to be there right now! :goodvibes

When we went, we just grabbed towels from the ship before we got off, and brought them back with us and put them in the towel bins they stick outside the ship for dirty towels on port days. Never occurred to us to rent a towel from anyone when you can get them for free on the ship.

We are on the same cruise! Still waiting for my confirmation but will see you at Nachi! After reading most the posts back from my question and Trip Advisor reviews I did book (I hope)! I am watching my husband adjust my 5 year old's snorkel gear right now and it is quite humerous.

Hi Paceyswife,

Yes, my wife Karen and I and our 12 year old son will be on this cruise. We are travelling down from Canada with another family (who has two boys 10 and 12) and will be with them at Nachi as well, but they may go to the ruins so won't be there until a bit later probably fust after 12.

Oops keep forgetting to check that cruise meet thread. I have been doing all the organization for our trip, so have been sorta absent from there.

But, that's great!
