If the parents are on the ddp, do the children have to?

Does the whole family have to be on the dining plan or can you exclude the children and pay for them oop? We are on the deluxe dining plan , all of us, dh, ds and me. I looked at the childrens menues at signature restaurants and I am a bit dissapointed, it is allways the same, I thought a signature restaurant would offer better food for kids (my child is not the mac and cheese child). I also saw on some dining reviews that they do the Kraft mac and cheese for kids, I expected at least a home made with veggies from a signature restaurant. Will I be able to order something different for ds or are they not flexible at all (like a corn on the cob etc.)?

If you are all on the same reservation/staying in the same room, then yes, it's everybody or nobody. I don't travel with kids, but I've noticed some restaurants have a better selection on the kids menu than others - like mahi-mahi or sirloin steak.

I don't mind for ds being on the dining plan, I am just dissapointed that the kids menues are so poorly imo for signature restaurants. I also saw sirloin steak and that was as good as it gets. I would have prefered a small version of an adult entree, obviously not that much coice, but definately not Mac and cheese from kraft. Oh well, he will eat from us, I hope the deserts are similar to the adult ones.

I don't recall Kraft macaroni & cheese at Disney anywhere. My kids LOVE Kraft but they don't like Disney mac & cheese - it's different than Kraft. But I can't recall either of them ordering that anywhere nicer, so maybe that is what they have some places, but I'd be surprised of that at a signature.

Thanks for looking those up for me. Doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. Still, it is the typical chicken breast and veggies. And a fish restaurant not serving fish for kids, weird. Maybe we are just different, my son eats what we eat, we do not cook extra for him. So yes, he eats shrimp, lobster, lamb, ribs, steak, all kinds of fish etc. I think you just don't see what I see:confused3 but nm, he will eat what he likes, it is not about the money.

Flying Fish choices are steak, chicken or fish skewers. Check the menus out at AllEars.net

I am sorry, I do not know either. I read a lot of dining reviews and the mac pictured in those looks just like the kraft stuff, noodles with yellow sauce, lol.
I just hoped that the signature restaurants would be more adventures for the kids. But maybe we are the only ones that think that young children can have something else beside noodles with cheese or marinara or chicken breast with carrots. When we go out at home we don't order a kids meal, he eats with us or we order a smaller version of an adults meal.

No, I understand what you mean. I was definitely not a chicken nugget-mac and cheese kid myself. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that Disney doesn't seem to get. When I'm not on the DDP, I like to get quick service kids meals once in a while when I want a small meal...I've become disappointed that the counter services are eliminating anything remotely interesting from their kids menus - Yak & Yeti counter service used to have a kid's meal that was an eggroll and a choice of two sides...I would always get 2 sides of fried rice and there was my Asian meal. NO MORE KID'S EGG ROLL :sad2:

Sooo...if your son doesn't care for what is on the kid's menu at a restaurant, don't hesitate to tell the server and ask if it's possible to get a child sized portion of one of the adult entrees. Depending on who you talk to, the CMs can be very accommodating and will do their best to make sure you have an enjoyable meal.

I will definately try to do that. We choose restaurants by the menus when we go out and it is just a little disapointing to see that allmost nothing on the kids menu represents the adult menu or the origin of the restaurant. I understand that most kids probably would not find anything to eat if the menu would be more like the adult ones, but it would be nice to see more choices for kids that represent the uniquenes of the restaurant . Maybe we would have less picky eaters if kids would be introduced to different food :confused3 We will have a wonderful time regardless, the adult menues are amazing and we will enjoy every single bit of our meals. :yay:

I was coming on here to say Y&Y still has the kids egg roll, but then noticed you said CS. The TS Y&Y has egg rolls on the kids menu.

The signature restaurants menus do sound very bland and the same but in most cases they do a nicer job with the food. At Yachtsman's steakhouse they offered the garlic butter they do on some of the adult steaks on the kids for example. The kids got mashed potatoes but could sub for the paprika fries or gratin. The veggie was baby carrots but they were actual baby carrots with the green tops and very cute. The dessert was also really adorable. White chocolate mickey mouse puzzle they assemble and then can paint with edible paint. The plate was done beautifully with a small cut out brownie and minature cupcake as well. No Kraft mac at WDW though there is some Stouffers. The signature places we've dined at have been pretty willing to somewhat adapt the kids food by adding sauces and such. The kids grilled fish at the signatures is usually something nice they serve adults but at the 1TS credit places it's often salmon.

Good to hear that. Should we just ask to get it more like the adult version, like replacing the side dish? I would prefer that. I mean we adults often change sides, right? My ds would definately prefer corn on the cob or roasted peppers to the usual brocoli and baby carrots.
