Pondering Aft Balcony on Dream ...

Hi there! We were considering 10158 or 10658 on the Dream for an upcoming cruise as the balcony looked a little bigger. We knew that the outdoor dining area (cabanas?) would be directly above the cabin, but then we saw some pictures that have been posted of the aft of the dream - and both cabins appear to have a stairway directly above them. I'm now concerned about noise and stomping! I'm not sure, but the stairways appear to lead to Palo and Meridian.

Would you have any advice to offer? I'm now thinking that perhaps a more central cabin in the aft of deck 6 may be a better option ....:confused3

Thanks again!

I'm staying aft on Deck 6 and we chose that part of the ship just because we heard that the balconies were bigger. We won't know though until we hear some trip reports from earlier travelers then us, we're not traveling until April 2011.

Since the stairs only go from Cabanas to Palo or Remy, I would be pretty confident in thinking that there wouldn't be a whole lot of foot traffic....for the most part.
There will be times that people may want to use that as a viewing deck, like during sailaway or when docking. And especially if they were to use that ship (which we know they aren't) for a cruise to Alaska or the Panama Canal, there'd be a lot of people out there. But for the most part, it will probably be pretty quiet back there.

I was generally not crazy about the aft rooms directly below Topsider's and Beach Blanket because of the outdoor seating, and people being able to look down onto our verandah....even though those were huge....and there was the lack of shade to consider. Plus every day when they hosed off the deck up there, quite a bit of trash would be washed down to those verandahs. Although it looks as though there won't be outside seating at Cabana's like there was on the other two ships.

There's a lot to consider with those aft rooms, that's for sure.

My main concern with the Aft balconies is the wind when out at sea.

A few times we had decided to sit out on the secret deck on the back of the Magic we found it far too windy, when not in port.

It looks as though they put plexiglass sheilds up sloped inwards, and a little higher, on the upper decks, on the back of the Dream, to try to stop this . Also the balcony dividers at the back should help.

The design of this ship has given us a dilema, because it looks like the regular port/starboard balconies will only give you a view of the lifeboats/ deck 5 verandahs when leaning over now.........so I guess we are all going to have to find some new favourites on the Dream, after the first stateroom reports come flooding back. !

I would not be too concerned about the stairway at the aft - if its anything like the 'secret stairway' on the Magic's aft, its seldom used.

I booked 10164 on two cruises! I have been in the suites on deck 8 all the way aft on the Magic/Wonder and had no issues with Beach Blanket/Topsiders.

The best part is sitting on the balcony at night and watching the ships trail in the water. It is beautiful!!

Can you confirm if there were issues with the decks at the back being windy or not :confused3- thanks.

Didn't have any issue with the exception of one evening when the weather was very bad... we had 10-14 foot seas that night.

Let me say that my experience has been so great back there that if I book a cruise, I will book an aft cabin and if it is not avail, I'll change the date! =)

The larger verandahs in back will be windy, almost all the time, depending on the speed of the ship. If the ship is really hauling, it will be windy. If it's making a slow journey, then it won't be.
The smaller ones, that are more closed in, will not.

Just to clarify, I'll tell you our experience with the aft balconies on the Magic and Wonder. Obviously, no one knows for sure yet what the experience will be like on the Dream. Most of the aft balconies, except the larger corner rooms on the Dream, will be deep, and have the dividers, so the wind & rain won't be a problem with those.
But speaking for the corner rooms that are more open to the elements, I think the situations will be the same.

We've been in the aft balconies on the Wonder and Magic 4 times. The last time, I got smart and moved down to HC room #6654.....because although it still got puddles of water on it when it rained, it at least had enough cover over it that we could be out there in July, in the heat and not roast.
But it was just as windy as all of the other, more open, verandahs.
Listen to any video clip on YouTube of aft verandahs on ANY cruise ship and the one thing you'll hear, above all else, is the wind.

We've been in room 8602 twice and 7638 once, and my parents have stayed in 7636.

My hair is short, and in every one of these rooms, I can go outside and dry my hair in the wind.

If it's raining, you can't go out there unless you're prepared to get soaked.

Every time, we've found napkins and food from the buffet on the balcony.

Every night just before our 8:00 dinner time, someone is outside at the buffet, hosing off the decking....which means you can't enjoy a drink before dinner out there, unless you have the early dining.

On Pirate Night, someone will climb onto your balcony, or your stateroom host will let them in, so they can remove any clothes or towels and then spray the balcony with some kind of flame retardant, in case sparks from the fireworks going off above by Palo should happen to drop onto your balcony. Imagine my surprise, in 8602, the first time a guy CLIMBED OVER from the public deck, onto my balcony.

I cannot tell you how many times people above at the buffet leaned over to tell us they envied our balcony. :sad2: About that time, I was ready to switch with them, so that I could then lean over and disturb them while they were out there....supposedly enjoying a PRIVATE balcony!

LOTS of black soot from the stacks, on everything that is out there....floor, chairs, table.......and that's in all of the aft staterooms, not just the top deck.

A question might come up as to why we'd repeatedly take those rooms.....well, because we were (at the time) a family who wanted concierge, needed the space, and needed the accessible room.
But the best choice we made was to forget about having a "suite" and moving down to the equally large, and far more private deck 6 accessible room. And also we now don't travel with as many kids, so we don't need the 2nd bathroom.

I'm disappointed that the larger rooms aft on the Dream are not accessible. I'm disappointed with the lack of "nicer" accessible rooms on the Dream....and also the changes to the suites. I think they have better layouts on the other 2 ships....but that's off topic.

There are some things about the Dream that will make at least one issue non-existant. It doesn't look as though there is outside seating at Cabana's buffet in the aft. So maybe they won't be up there every night at dinner time, hosing off the deck. And maybe there won't be food and paper goods dropping to the balconies below.
But they'll probably still "spray" for Pirate Night. And there will still be sun with no shade, and people being able to look down onto the balconies.

Depending on how the aft balconies on the Dream are tiered, the problem with people looking down, and any debris, should only apply to the uppermost deck, 10.
I'm not sure if they will spray all of those balconies on Pirate Night or not, since they do looked to be tiered at such an angle that sparks could enter any of them. But logic might say that any spark dropping below deck 10 may have cooled by the time it lands.

Where are you seeing that Cabanas doesn't have outside seating, or are you not counting the open seating at the back of the deck on Deck 11 that's under the awnings as outside seating? (Doesn't have walls, so I'm thinking it's outside and not air conditioned.) I think there could still be an issue with water and debris coming down from Cabanas, though hopefully they won't be washing it as much with the awning over it.

Anyone think that the large aft rooms could be considered accessible again? I ask because I saw on the Dream travel agent page that the interactive deck plan is still showing the rooms as accessible, and because they are doing work on those verandah doors along with the other accessible doors. Just curious if they may have worked out whatever issue caused them to remove them from the accessible classification and if they may be heading back in that direction.

From the pictures we've seen, there just doesn't look to be nearly as much outdoor seating at Cabana's than what there was at Topsider's/BBB.
You're right, I should not have assumed that meant there was NO outdoor seating.

Maybe they WILL reclassify those rooms. I hope so. There really aren't enough accessible verandah rooms, IMO. I guess they still have plenty of time to do the work needed on the interior of them....but the bathrooms would have had to have already been layed out for HC.
*SIGH* Just another one of those things where we'll have to wait and see. I wish I had some patience!!;)

There more I think about it, though, I really doubt they'll make those rooms accessible. If that was the plan, they wouldn't have let people book them w/o a medical form. Which actually brings up another irritating point. DCL lets people book the HC rooms and hold them until almost final payment, before they have to turn in the form. In the mean time, someone who really needs one, can't book them. I think they should require the form within 2 or 3 weeks of booking.

Okay....now I'm rambling. :guilty:

I did wonder about this, but then if they do convert them to HA, I would assume that DCL would just reassign those people already booked to another cabin of the same category (or possibly higher if they wanted less of a fuss !), which I'm sure they would claim they were perfectly with in their rights to do.

So that's another thing putting me off booking them now - the possibility of being forceably reallocated another cabin at a later date, when the choice is much less. I imagine it would be pretty hard to argue with Disney, or morally, if they said they needed you cabin in order for a less abled person to sail at all.
