Welcome To The Caribbean, Love ~ Updated 5-27 P52

I'm also Lactose intolerant (well that's the easy version of what I have, I have, its a bit more complicated than that), but it's easy for me to deal with by taking a pill and avoiding massive amounts of dairy!!! So I feel you on that!!!

Ughhh...to No Casey's!

I have heard great things about Disney chefs and allergies so it should be easy peasy for you to put on your ADRs and find foods that will accomodate your diet!

From everything I have read, Disney is great when it comes to food allergies. Hopefully, you will be able to find out a lot about what items have dairy in them before you go, and then you can just plan accordingly. :goodvibes

Ugh to the food allergies. But I guess a diet without any bread would certainly enhance weight loss. I probably coudn't do that for myself, but I could for my kids.

I have a lot of IBS symptoms and I recently tried this product called Align. It is an industrial strength probiotic (and your mention of yogurt made me think of it). I don't have lactose intolerance per say, but my whole diet was causing issues with IBS. This supplement is absolutely wonderful and I have recommended it to a lot of my friends with IBS and they all give it a :thumbsup2

From what I have heard Disney is amazing with all food allergies!

YEA!!! I got a SHOUT OUT!!!!!!:banana::banana:

Snaps for Tim!!! :goodvibes

Unfortunately, it was in the same paragraph as breast feeding and pumping!!!! :headache: Luckily, I'm a dad and I had to deal with pumping when our DD was a baby. So I know where you are coming from.

:rotfl2: I figured you might have experience in this area, even if it wasn't...ah...personal.

A few years ago my SIL went to Disney- she is highly allergic to gluten. I think Disney either sent her a list of food that was safe or to a special website before she left. While she was at each restaurant, the chef came out and listened to her concerns. She said it was reassuring that they cared and really took care of cooking her food with no contamination. She was very impressed with the way it was handled because many restaurants don't understand gluten allergies(though now it is becoming more common)

I think at CS my SIL asked to speak to a manager. The manager had a book with all the different allergies and what was safe to eat. I think your best bet is just to call and to speak to someone.

WOW! Thank you for all the information, Tim. I'm so glad I mentioned this, as you, and many other posters are giving me such positive feedback.

Yes m'dear.....Dole Whips are dairy free! Eat as many as you want.

Thank you for enabling my Dole Whip addiction! When DH asks why I want one again, I'll just tell him, Heidi said...

One note about adding the allergy thing to your ADRs. It can take a while for a chef to come to your table to speak to you. I only put my tree nut allergy on one ADR because I don't want to waste the time it might take for the chef to see me.

Good to know, thanks. That might factor into which ressies I put it on, depending on how I think the kiddos will do. Although we could always get Nemo an app while we wait.

Liam has problems with the milk protein but thankfully it's not so bad that is has to be out of his diet 100%. We just don't give him milk to drink and limit his cheese intake.

That's good, at least you can you limit it and not have to eliminate completely. And, you never know, he might grow out of it.

I am hugging you right through my computer monitor......

.

Thanks!

Disney makes handling an allergy so easy. The chefs are very accomodating. Just another reason why WDW is such a great place!

Seriously! I've talked to my sister about this because she's recently discovered a gluten allergy, and I've told her about how wonderful they are at accommodating.

I'm hinting big time, but so far, she hasn't bitten. :lmao:

I cant' even imagine a cheese-free life!!!

It's a sad existence. :lmao:

I wish I could take a pill. Even for myself, you know, after I'm done nursing Squirt, but it doesn't work that way for me, the pill actually makes it worse. Long story. :lmao:

Yes, to think that even though I really want to wing out in this trip, I'll have to be careful about planning where we eat. :lmao:

Ugh to the food allergies. But I guess a diet without any bread would certainly enhance weight loss. I probably coudn't do that for myself, but I could for my kids.

I did find some bread at the grocery store yesterday without milk in it and I was SO excited!

And I know what you mean. It's hard to do it when you're thinking of just you, but when you've got a little one's digestive tract solely dependent on what you eat, it's a totally different story.

I've come to realize though that I need to do this for myself, because it's really not just him, and I need to take care of me so I can be around a long, LONG time for this kiddos. :thumbsup2

My sister had IBS, or what she thought was such, and discovered that really, she has celiac. So she's on a totally gluten-free diet and it's made a world of difference for her, which is great.

It's amazing how we never even have to think of these things, and then suddenly develop them as adults.

I am very grateful for all of the accommodations DIsey makes for allergies--Sweetie has a banana allergy and therefore cannot have any banana products or products with similar proteins. Fresh tomatoes can sometimes be a problem. They make her food in an area where there is no chance of cross contamination, and bring it out separately. I was abl to order a banana creme brule at Kona because of their carefulness!

They will be great and there will be plenty of fantastic stuff for you to have there

I'm not sure if I remembered that about Sweetie, but thank you for sharing your experience! It's good to know that they're so caring of their guests.

Which is why we love Disney so much, right? :goodvibes

:rotfl: Keep working on your sister. She'll come around!

:rotfl: Keep working on your sister. She'll come around!

Oh, I'm getting her there eventually. I don't know what I'll have to do...probably promise to ride Space Mountain :scared:...or some other ride she convinced me to do as a kid that absolutely terrified me, but by hook or by crook, she'll come on one of our trips.

Actually, I think what will eventually do her in is Nemo. Who can resist a nephew, eh? ;)

Gibbs: Let's put some distance between us and this island and head out to open sea!
Jack Sparrow: Yes to the first, yes to the second, but only insofar as we keep to the shallows as much as possible.
Gibbs: That seems a bit contradictory, Captain.
Jack Sparrow: I have every faith in your reconciliatory navigational skills, Mr. Gibbs, now where is that monkey, I want to shoot something!

I had a very nice, fairly relaxed weekend. Which meant that I had a lot of time to think about this trip. Of course, I sneak in thinking about it when no one knows, either. As I'm making breakfast, changing a diaper, giving a haircut. Okay, maybe not so much during the haircut, that requires a lot of concentration, especially when your five year old is screaming, "It itches, it itches!" Because no matter how many times I do it, and how tightly I wrap the towel around him, he still manages to get hair all over the place. Or I do, depending on how you look at it. Anyway, Nemo has a lovely new haircut, which was well overdue.

So I was thinking a lot about the trip, and I've really been putting off writing the itinerary chapter, for a lot of reasons. One, because being tied to a schedule wasn't something that I envisioned for this trip. Two, because I was really hoping for a room discount instead of free dining, and three, because we're not park hopping.

So I thought about the root of the issue here. With the food allergies, it really makes sense to have the dining plan. I'll probably get nicer meals at table service restaurants than I will at counter service, given that my choices will be limited. I'm thinking it will be nice to have one meal per day where I don't have to worry so much, where the Disney magic will just take care of it all.

I had dreamed previously of getting a nice AP discount and staying Club Level. I don't think that's the right choice for this go round. Given the food allergy, and the amount of time we'll be spending in the parks and doing our various DIS meets, I don't think we'll be there enough to warrant wanting to stay Club Level. The next time I stay there, I'd like to be able to eat all the little schneckens. "When the schnecken beckons." (Name that movie.)

Anyway, this is my whole thought process, and you're all privy to it, because it's part of planning the trip.

So here's what I think I'm going to do.

I think I'm going to throw the itinerary out. Keep the dining, and add on park hoppers for MJS and Nemo.

I'm planning to upgrade to an annual pass, so I'll be able to park hop. We've got several people we'd like to meet with / tour with while we're down there, and it'd be nice to have the flexibility to hop between parks and not have it be such a logistical issue to figure all that out.

It only makes sense to upgrade the menfolk to park hoppers as well.

Honestly, it frees up the whole schedule. It gives me the ability to say, if we go the Animal Kingdom, and it closes at 500, we can go to another park afterward. We don't have to be married to the one park per day rule. Doing it this way, we can spend as much or as little time in each place as we want to. And honestly, I think with the nature of the trip, and with the food allergy, this is really what's going to work out best for us.

I welcome your thoughts as well. :goodvibes

So, here's our dining as it stands. I have one thing I might like to tweak and I'm wondering how to switch it around.

Saturday, Feb 26th - Arrival Day - No Dining Plans
I thought about booking a dinner ressie, but MJS vetoed that quite speedily. He said, and I quote, "we have to go to the Magic Kingdom on our first day there." Who knew the man had such opinions, eh?

Sunday, Feb 27th - Princess 1/2 Marathon - Sci Fi Dine In Lunch
From what Tink and I can tell, the 1/2 marathon ends in/near Epcot. It made sense to me to plan lunch at Sci Fi, since I can easily boat to DHS. We're not yet sure if it'll just be Squirt and I waiting for Tink, or if MJS and Nemo will join in as well. I will leave it up to them, if they want some park touring, father/son bonding time, then we'll split that morning. Sci Fi is a favorite of Nemo's, and without him knowing about the trip, we were still able to talk to him about this and ask him if he'd like to eat there again. The answer was a resounding "YEAH!"

Monday, Feb 28th - Kona Cafe Dinner

I've wanted to try this restaurant for a while, and I think the dinner selections are something the family will really enjoy. Plus, after reading Amanda's great review, I couldn't resist.

Tuesday, Mar 1 - Artist Point Dinner

I can't stay at the Wilderness Lodge and not eat at this restaurant again! I've never eaten there, and I really do enjoy one signature dining meal per vacation. MJS and I don't go out to eat unless it's a really special occasion, like our anniversary or a birthday, so for us to do something like this on vacation is a really nice treat. Tink will be joining us for this ADR as well, and I'm so looking forward to it.

Wednesday, Mar 2 - Coral Reef Lunch

Originally planned as our Epcot day, this will remain so because it's the first day of the Flower and Garden Festival. I'd thought about doing the princess breakfast at Akershus, because I've been longing to do that for so long, but it seemed something better suited to a girls only trip. When I thought of what my boys would like, the answer was easy. Nemo loved eating at the Coral Reef several times in the past, and the aquarium is sure to keep him and the baby occupied as we're waiting for food. The fact that I love the decor is just a bonus!

Thursday, Mar 3 - Chef Mickey's Breakfast
This is my reservation with the most mixed feelings. It's a family tradition that started on our first big family trip, Mom, Nana, FIL, MJS, Nemo, and I would go here for the latest breakfast ressie on the day we were attending MNSSHP. It would be a leisurely day in which we'd wake up late, get to the Contemporary, eat, shop, and then go back to our hotel and change into our Halloween costumes. We've done this breakfast on every trip since. I can't even fathom doing it without Mom. It's on our last day for this reason. I don't know if I can do it, and I don't know if I can not do it.

The Chef Mickey Breakfast is the only thing I've thought about moving or canceling altogether. I'm just having the toughest time deciding. We have maxed out our dining credits with our other meals, so this would be OOP. That doesn't even phase me, it's not about the money. It's just about whether or not it's a good idea.

And honestly, I don't know if I can tell you that until we're down there. I'm really conflicted on it. A lot of my dining decisions were made based on these conflicted feelings. Some of these restaurants I haven't eaten in with Mom (or haven't for a very long time) and some I have. I wanted a combination of old feelings and making new memories. No matter where I go in the World, I can guarantee you, it will be hard and it will make me think of her. I don't think there's a place in there that I don't have some memory of us on our trips, whether it was just me and her, or a whole family vacation.

Part of me wants to do it because it's our family tradition, and I love the food there. And part of me wants to take that morning, head into the Magic Kingdom for one last park hurrah, and have POTC be our last ride, just like I did with Mom in January.

Either way is honoring part of our Disney trip history, so to speak. Only time will tell which option we chose.

YAY for relaxing weekends!!!

I really enjoyed reading about your plans or lack of plans! The more I go, the more I'm falling into the less plans the better!!!

Your ADRs look fantastic!!! I so want to eat at Kona's for dinner sometime and Artist Pointe...so want to eat there some day!!!

Great ADRs!
I'm sure whether or not to keep the Chef Mickey's ADR will come to you during your trip. It may feel like the right thing to do. And I love the idea of making POTC your last ride for this trip. It's a beautiful way to remember your mom.

I think when you get to a certain point, and you've been there x amount of times, it's easy to just say, whatever we do, we do.

As long as Pirates and the Haunted Mansion are on the "do" list, I'm good. ;)

I'm really excited to try both, since they'll be totally new to me.

Thanks!

Honestly, right now, I'm not really feeling it. I love the food, but I just can't envision myself setting foot in the place.

And practically speaking, a large part of whether or not we do character dining will be dependent on how Squirt does with characters. If he's all over them and really enjoying it, then that would certainly sway my decision.

Kona is an excellent choice!

I liked Artist Point but I think I ordered wrong, does that make sense? I wish I ordered differently and I think I would have been happier. You will just have to wait and see moer about that in my TR. :rotfl2:

I think no plans is the way to go. I don't like having every little thing planned out, it stresses me out. I like going with a vague idea of what I'm going to do and just winging it. pirate:

I understand what you're saying. :goodvibes

I'm not really even looking at menus anymore, because I have no idea what I'll really be able to have, or if they'll be able to modify menu items to suit my allergy.

Before I even knew about the DIS, this is how we vacationed. We never planned anything other than dining. That was it.

I want to get back to that, because it's who we really are, and what we really love.

I don't even care what order we do what...well, except that MJS said we had to go to the MK the first day. :lmao: That I agree with.

Pirates and Haunted Mansion!! I think you just might be a girl after my own heart Kat!!! pirate:

Your wide open plans sounds lovely. It's a great way to do it, especially with two young ones now.

I'm sure that a Chef Mickey's decision will come to you while your there. It may just be way too soon. Maybe trying someplace new is just the ticket for this trip, and then in a few years you can go back again when wounds are less raw and your more ready to share the experience again with Nemo and Squirt.

I think so. :goodvibes

You know, part of me really feels that the best thing to do is head into the Magic Kingdom and make pirates our last ride. It just seems more appropriate, since that's the freshest memory. I think that maybe going to Chef Mickey's would be something I'd like to do with Nana and my FIL, but again, who knows. We'll see. :goodvibes

I just read your last two updates....YAY for Squirt nursing well! I exclusively pumped with Henry for 8 months as well. Not fun. Moooooooooooo! And then having to deal with the intolerance on top of it??!:hug::hug: I think your plans of doing a sit-down once a day is a good one with the intolerance, like you said, at least one meal a day you won't have to stress/worry about it and can eat more normally.

I have truly grown to enjoy winging it. We always have a loose schedule, and I always have tons of ideas on what we could do, but we always let the day roll and just go with it. Part of me wants to run around and hit everything, but with hubby and child, its more enjoyable with them to relax and do whatever we are feeling. Someday though, I'm ditching them for a while and going craZy in the park solo!

We also arrive on the 26th and will probably hit up MK that day at some point. MSEP is running that night, so we'll most likely swing in for that - maybe we'll see ya there! :goodvibes
