Hello everyone! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Mary and my husband is Dan. We are true Disney maniacs and love to travel. Our trip planning began about a year and half ago when Disney announced that they were doing the Med cruises agin in 2010. We were so excited we upped and booked, without really thinking about the financial burden. After a few months, reality began to set in. The cruise cost (which at that time was insane) was one thing, but add in the flight, port excursions, hotel before and all the nonsense spending aboard and we were in real trouble. Honestly for a young thirty something couple like us it was just too much.

My husband Dan is graduating with his MBA this year and he has worked so hard I really wanted to be able to go to Europe, since he has never been abroad. We decided to cancel the cruise. We planned a trip to Paris and the SOuth of France instead for a fraction of the price. Still, something seemed missing. True, how could one complain when such a trip was being planned?

One day back in March,Dan approached me, and mentioned he thought we should still consider the Disney Med cruise. After all how else would he be able to see so much of Europe in so little time? Since we had our flight booked from JFK to Paris, and from Nice to JFK he would call and see if we could reroute the last flight to be from Barcelona to JFK and add a flight in to Barcelona from Paris.

Well, turns out Air France only charged us a little bit more each, because the flight from Barcelona to Ny was way cheaper than from Paris. Ok so this was working out. Still the Med cruise was not cheap, even for a oceanview room it was coming in to around $4,000 per person which was way out of our budget. We did it anyway:eek:

Then just 4 or 5 weeks later DCL announces GTY rooms for less than $1,000 per person. Could this be happening? We would be saving thousands of dollars. So what if we had to downgrade rooms. The price was worth it. Now we could actually afford this trip and that would make this cruise that much sweeter. In the end I feel like we got waaaaay more than what we paid for, value wise. So we are very happy campers, considering we had the most amazing trip we have ever had.

We have close to 1,000 pictures to share, which I am in the processing of uploading to photobucket and should be able to start posting some tonight.

Itinerary:
Fri 8/13: fly from NY to Paris.
Sat 8/14- Tues 8/17: spend in Paris
Tues 8/17- fly out to Barcelona at 8:00pm, check into hotel in Barcelona
Wed 8/18: 10 night Disney Cruise!

Side note: I just want to thank all of the Mediterranean Mouseketeers on the disboards. Meeting everyone and doing the Fish exchange was a blast. Having a friendly face to say hi to on a boat of 2,000 strangers was priceless!

Hi Mary,

We were actually booked on the August 18th sailing and were trying to convince my parents to join us....but they felt that a 5 night was too short and the price was pretty high....since they decided not to go and the current hurricane activity....I got concerned about sailing during the height of the season.....long story short(or not so short)..we changed our saling to the 4/17 and we will be with Lori and her family. We are very excited to be saling together so soon. Shari is well...finally getting over her jet lag....went to see Justin Beiber Tuesday night....Rick had to host an event in a box at the garden so we joined him...quite a concert. Hope all is well.

Susan

Mary,

It was nice to meet you and Dan. I can't wait to see your pictures. It is hard to believe that it was only last week that we were spending our last night on the ship.

Susie

KIm- thanks! Happy Birthday again, I am sure it was a special one.

Susan- that is too funny that you and Lori are on the same cruise! I would love to sail in Aril but my school schedule does not allow it. I hope Shari had fun at Justin Beiber!

Susie- oh my, it was wonderful meeting you as well. Hope your mom and kids had a great time as well!

The beginning of our great adventure

Any New Yorker could tell you, driving to JFK at 5:00pm on a Friday is asking for more chaos than any person should endure. Luckily for Dan and I things went pretty smoothly to book right when the rates come out and you can save really big if you plan in advance.. We arrived at JFK checked our bags and head to the Air France aiffares lounge.

Did you say Paris? Why not start the bubbly now then?

The flight was uneventful and we slept pretty well. It is really more than anyone who is afraid of flying could ask for. It was my first experience with business class and it was well worth the little splurge. Yes, little splurge. The key is book waaaay in advance so that you get the best rate. We paid only a little more for our August flight in january than people booking the flight in May paid for economy!

Welcome to Paris

When we arrived at Charles De Gaulle, things went pretty smoothly. We got our luggage and headed out to grab a cab. The lines move pretty quickly and things are very well organized. We jumped in the cab and headed to our home for the next few night, The Duquesne Eiffel in the 7th Arrondissement , it was also close to the Eiffel tower which was pretty romantic. It was one of the highest rated hotel on Trip advisor that was in our budget. We shopped early and got a great advance booking rate for a "comfort room" which was sort of the mid level room available. We decided to save money on the room on Paris, and spend it on food here, and tours on the cruise. The hotel was also recommended by Rick Steves. I have been to Paris twice and always stayed in the Latin Quarter and this was a nice change. Dan absolutely loved the area, and since it was his first time to Europe, I really hoped he would.

The hotel was small (as to be expected) but very charming and chic.

Dan thought these little gas pumps on the sides of the street were funny...definitely only for Parisian sized cars lol!

Only a block from the hotel.

Our friend Monsieur Mickey decided to join us once in a while...just a little tour here and there. I highly recommend his services lol!

yes the bathroom was really this small, we chocked it up to quintessential Parisian experience!:rotfl:

After getting settled in and unpacking we decided to just keep going and hitting the town. Nothing would be worse for jet lag than taking a long nap. Instead we tried to automatically adjust ourselves to local time. It worked well (that and waking up and 4am a every morning for a few days before the trip). Now coming back to the states, that's a different story. I am just finally recovered (a week later) from the jetlag!

I love the trip report so far babe....even though i know what lies next....i need more trip report!popcorn::popcorn:

Great Report so far Mary! It is so interesting to hear of your experiences before the cruise.

It was lovely to meet you both and thanks so much for the website and the thoughtfulness of providing crayons and colouring pages for the children at the cruise meet.

Kate

Hey Mary,

I arrived to this party late....silly me. It was great meeting you and Dan...it was so much fun pre cruise and during cruise with you. I wrote a trip report as we were on the ship on DH's ipad. He's currently adding pictures...I don't know that I will publish it here, but I may do it privately, since I wrote about some adventures that only the meditteranean mouseketeers could understand.

Miss everyone...wish we were still there. On another note, saw Lori and Family for dinner last night...it's neat having new friends living so close.

:yay:Just got an email that the thread was re-activated...read your blog entry and can't wait to read more:goodvibes

Probably our best family vacation ever:cool2:

Reading about your cold rainy days in Paris reminds me of when we got back to Germany after the cruise and it was cold and rainy and we had on shorts and T's and were freezing after all the hot days we had on the trip!

We are going to Paris next month for my birthday and we're still planning a Baltic cruise this Summer although nothing is booked yet. If I knew Disney was doing the Baltic in 2012, I would wait for that but right now we are looking at NCL....

Hope you and Dan are doing well, it was such fun to meet you guys:goodvibes
