Hello Everyone,

Been reading all the forums here about all the adventures people had before during and after their trips and I decided "Hey what the heck" I learned so much, laughed and even got teary eyed with some. So I decided to give it a shot..

Background:
Me: 43 Retired Law Enforcement Current Security Director
DW: ** ( she always turns 21 still don't know her age) Elementary School Teacher
DD15 (will be 16 on Cruise) Typical Teenager life revolves around Cheerleading
DD14 (will be 15 on Cruise) Teenager who loves Cheerleading and reading
DD2 (yes that's right TWO:cloud9:) Our little fun and great surprise

20 Years ago the wife and I went to WDW and the Big Red Boat on our Honeymoon (swore we would cruise again but life happened)
Nov 2003 - 1st Family WDW Vacation
Dec 2004 - DD14 Pop Warner Cheer advanced to National Championship (She was so young and we had fun)
Dec 2007 - DD15 and DD14 both of their teams advanced to the POP Warner National Championships and both won 1st place in their respective divisions. Now that was a very Busy and GREAT week...( Funny thing there was wife was complaining about being tired and feeling sick all week. We all brushed it off as being so busy with the 2 girls advancing in the competitions since October. NOT:::: She was carrying our little Jillian we found out a few weeks later:goodvibes)
April 2009 - DD and me went to High School Cheerleading Competition National Championships (1st Place in her Division) in WDW

DECISIONS

October 2009 -

Well DD15 is turning 16 August of 2010 and she is starting to go to her friends and families sweet 16 extravaganzas. SO we start discussing what she wants to do. She is really unsure exactly what she wants to do and is torn:confused3.
Well her and her sister DD14 come to me and my wife with an idea! They really want to go on a cruise and they also understand how expensive they are, so they both are willing to forgo any type of Sweet 16 party if the family can go on a cruise!!!!

Me and the wife begin to talk about it, DD15 will be 16 August of 2010 and DD14 will be 16 September 2011.. Well if you start crunching numbers at how expensive these sweet 16 parties are, with the price of the cruises we would probably save money, if not enjoy 7 days of fun, instead of a total of 8 hours...SO we go back to the girls and tell them they can begin the research on different cruises, then we will sit and discuss it..

November 2009 -Decisions Decisions-

Several weeks go by with the girls so engulfed in their research (wish they would put that effort in school lol, they are honor students). So finally they come to us with their choice, but are a little apprehensive. Why do ask? Well the girls not only researched the cruise lines, they researched the prices, costs for transportation etc...Me and my DW sit with them and ask them to tell us.. Well with the answer they come back with, we could not say "NO"..

Both girls explain to us that they really want to go on the Disney cruise and explain the reasoning..
1) The baby has at this time become a Mickey Fan thanks to the Disney Channel.
2) It seems that Disney has more to offer kids their age
3) A very good friend goes on the DCL and she loves it

Then they tell us the negatives:
1) DCL seems to be more expensive than the other cruises
2) We have to go to Fl. where as other cruises leave NJ or NY area (more costs)

Well me and DW tell the girls that this is their Sweet 16 celebrations in lieu of big parties and they should let us worry about costs and such.

SO DISNEY IT IS:cool1:!!!!!!!But When? oooohhh mmmmyyyy more decisions!!!!!

This took less time than I could have imagined, almost the same night it was decided.... With my wife working in the same school district as the girls, they are all off the first week in November so low and behold OCT 30, 2010 Western Cruise on the Magic it is......

I am in a true believer in giving local buisness people work, so I could have booked through Disney or other on line TA, but that is not me. Me and the DW go to a TA we know and have used for prior trips and Book the date and leave the deposit... We are finally starting our voyage with many ups and downs - But as we know right now 81 days and counting...

Still to come ----- Transportation, The who, what, where and How to get to the darn Boat

January 2010!!

11 Months and counting, we put the cruise details on the back burner for the holiday season, though I start finding myself researching everywhere to get information on the cruise. Everyone starts the countdown once the new year arrives.:dance3:

OK, well we have the booking done, next step is to decide what to do from here. Do we drive, train, plane, costs etc!!!! So now its Dads turn to start the research:surfweb:...Start to go online for airfare!!!! NOT airlines have not posted flights past October 15, 2010 until March... Ok so I can still look at the flight information and costs to see the approximate costs.. Ahh thats what I do, well the airfare rates are not that bad, from my research we may be able to get this done. I check trains, auto train driving gas and hotel costs and the prices are almost all the same if you calculate convenience with flying.

I really do not want to drive, 2 teenage daughters and a 2 year old little girl (even with videos and DVD's I don't know if I will survive the stress). So with my fingers crossed I decide to wait until we can get airfare costs. We also have to figure out when we want to get to Florida. The cruise leaves on a Saturday, with the weather in NJ who the heck knows about delays at the airport (more stress), if we train or drive we are talking about lost days of school for kids and wife (which my kids will attest I do not like them missing school).

March 2010 - Airfare Costs are Posted ---

:scared1: Oh my Gosh!!!! The airfare is double what I had anticipated.. I truly believe that airlines know that NJ schools are out so the almost double their prices to hurt parents like me who do not like there kids to miss school.
OK now I have to buckle down!!!!! Research Research - Look at train costs, time of travel - Driving CAN YOU SAY STREEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!

Hey wait a minute lets check another airport like JFK - LaGuardia... Ok calm down now Gerry, relax we can get over this...Low and behold I can save over One Grand by flying out of JFK and since the company I work for has contracts out there FREE PARKING....:yay:

Ok but when do we fly, Saturday Morning? Friday, if so where do we stay!! Ok the stress of this trip is starting to get to me!!!!

Well it is found out that my daughters Best Friend is also going on the cruise and are taking the Auto train (they don't fly), they are getting into Fl. on Friday and staying at a hotel in the Port. So I get the Hotel information, remember we are not the a typical family of four we have 5 which everybody loves to get more money from you. (I wish I could be dishonest when I do these things, but I can't I am like good old Abe I can't tell a lie). So I find out the room will cost over 250... per night... I refuse to pay that so back to the drawing board... Then I remember I have a TA... Silly me....

So I go to my TA with all my problems, (ok not all I don't think she has a PHD) and we take our time, research and come up that it appears Disney is the way to go.. I have 2 teenage girls, a 2 year old so to lug around all the luggage would be such a treat for me (Me and DW will pass on that) we got the transfers, staying at POR and we booked our airfare for Friday Morning..

Excitement is growing:woohoo:

To be Continued::: Tragedy Strikes our Family (esp the girls)

Well Ok now its April and 6 months and counting, so far,

1) Booked the cruise
2) Arranged the travel itinerary.
3) Wait!!!!

Well the cruise is like a everyday dinner time conversation, especially with 4 females going (no insult meant) but it is like, what do we wear, dresses, bathing suits, excursions, shoes to pack, what is the weather going to be, sweaters sweatshirts, boys...... what wait a minute here easy on the boy talk!!!....The girls also want to celebrate their 16th birthday at the Formal night (once we figure out when that is).

THEN TRAGEDY STRIKES!
Several years ago, the girls wanted a puppy so bad.. It so happened that a friends dog and Australian Shepherd just had pups, and I got to get first choice. In the litter was the cutest little pup ever, she was White and brown with the bluest eyes and I talked the DW into getting it for the girls for Christmas since it was only weeks away and the pup (later named Mellie) would be ready to leave the mom, So we surprised them Christmas Morning!!! Probably the best Christmas I ever experienced in my life seeing the joy in the 2 daughters faces it was priceless... Well a couple years go by and my brother wants a puppy and the friends dog had another litter and we got him one. Well as it turns out this pup was found to be blind in one eye and completely deaf, but my brother took her (Libby). Things did not work out due to other factors and he had to give the dog up. I could not see them giving the dog to a shelter since it was kind high maintenance, so we took her.

( Sorrry to bore you with this but it is better if you get the whole story)

Well the 2 dogs got along great, Mellie was Libby's eyes and ears, well we had a bad storm in late April and my fence was damaged. The dogs got out.. It was noticed rather quickly and they usually only run to the front door and bark, but not that night... Well as reported by witnesses the blind deaf dog ran in the street as a car was approaching and Mellie jumped in front of her and the car killed Mellie.. I got to the scene moments after this happened!!!
Me and the DW got the Blind dog leashed, and then broke the news to the girls..... Needless to say, the cruise was the last thing on their minds for awhile.. RIP Mellie

Well it took sometime but finally the girls adjusted, being the first sense of loss for them, and we began talkin cruise again.. Actually Thank Goodness for the Cruise!!!

To be continued!!!! More to come, the discovery of DisBoards, gown shopping, beach getaway...

Awesome sarge! So great to have another TR to read from our cruise!

We have a DD2 as well! :) AND ! We took her on a cruise in January (at 19/mo) It was...well...interesting! That was RCCL though and they did not have Flounders so I am looking forward to a little time off on the cruise, if you know what I mean!

OK so now we are entering May and June, school is winding down, kids getting ready for the summer and yet there is still so much to get done!! Dinner time is still the family "Cruise Report Time", with the girls talking about what to wear, how many dresses, outfits, bathing suits shoes. What they need to buy...

Ok this report is being done by a guy who spent most of his adult life chasing down bad guys in some of the worst areas in NJ...... Now I find myself entrenched in topic conversations that include " strapless bra's, one piece or two piece suits, skirts being short enough, long enough, gowns, shoes, what matches and don't match.......:scared1: All with my teenage daughters!!!! LOL
I contemplate heavy doses of alcohol but gotta save the dough for all the shopping the girls are anticipating!!!!

As the girls research the different teen adventures, they come to me in panic...What now?

Well they want to do the Wild Side at Castaway Cay, but they don't know how to ride a bike...The bike thing is off topic, so I need to explain I don't want you to think I am a horrible parent...

Back in January 2000 I became gravely ill, being hospitalized and on life support for a period. I lost all ability to walk, breath etc..(still left undiagnosed after being treated by the best doctors in NJ and at John Hopkins Md.). It took me 18 months to finally recover and go back to work. During this time by daughters were 4 and 5 at the start so I could not, nor did my wife have the time to teach them how to ride a bike...A year later I got hurt at work and have had my 2 hips replaced and my shoulder, so even then they got a raw deal.. ( Still feel much guilt about this period for my wife and kids I really was always recovering for almost 4 years) but the DW was a angel :littleangel:during this time, so I think that is why I am going all out on this cruise to celebrate life with a great family.

Back to the pre trip-----

Ok so the girls are in a panic, what to do... :confused3 I don't own any bikes, but my DW Brother offers to teach them, he is of course younger and has all his original body parts... So the girls are learning how to ride with 79 days remaining till we leave...

June we finally pay off the remainder of our balance!!!! :yay:(Now only need beer money) and of course all the dimes to pay for new clothes..

More to follow later......

Hi, I am Gerry and I am a ----------Wait wrong meeting, this cruise is really picking up the pace, more questions, more research more STRESSSSSSS....

:headache:

I start researching the web sites, blogs and anything else that will help with some of the questions being thought of....Seems like every 30 seconds my mind jumps to another question, worry concern....

AHHHHH! I find Dis Boards.... Start reading, reading, reading and find the meet site for our cruise.. So what do I do I start reading, reading:surfweb:.. Darn it is almost 200 pages by the time I finally Join up and introduce myself and ask some stupid questions:confused:....

But I do have to tell ya, the folks over on our meet board are some top notch peeps... Welcomed me, answered my questions and took me in as part of their group.. Thanks folks:grouphug:..

During this whole time since we decided to cruise, the cruise is brought up at almost every conversation with every person we are with ( I feel like this cruise has found a life of its own). Well I get a phone call from the DD2's godparents, some really close friends of the family and well they asked if it was OK if they can go on the cruise with us...

I say "NO" of course...Just kidding, well they wanted to celebrate the DD15,DD14's birthday and of course spend time with DD2 their god daughter...(the heck with me and DW we don't rate ).

So now there are 3 families going a total of 11 of us going.... More Stress thinking about what, where, who, when everyone wants to do things. Don't wanna leave someone out.... Well we will meet to discuss our plans in a later report, but rest assurred the stress was not necassary... If I only knew I would not have bought that 12 pack of Landshark....:lmao: Which reminds me I am upset that DCL does not have that beer listed.. It is a Fl beer after all amd my favorite...

Well gotta run update later....

Enjoying your posts. We are on this cruise too, and are from NJ as well! Just booked our excursions, and GOT PALO!!

I can completely relate. I don't mean to talk about my vacation everyday. I don't even try to bring it up with my co-workers, customers, and family members. Then again, its only 70+ days away so may be I shouldn't feel so bad anymore?

Stress!! Again, TOTALLY UNDERSTAND! I don't know about you, but my wife has put me on notice that when the vacation arrives to NOT worry about them and just enjoy relaxing on the Ship/WdW. Look forward to meeting you and hearing more. Not to mention, it will be nice to hear another perspective in a TR. :thumbsup2

:yay: Since it being our first cruise we can't book until Monday.... It seems there are many fellow Garden Staters on board

:):):)

Well actually with the DD2 it is me telling my wife to relax... She sees everyone looking at different things and immediately worries about the baby.. So I am the one who keeps reassuring her not to worry..

Thanks Jen!!! Can't wait for the cruise, BTW thanks for reaching out with the other thing you are too kind :littleangel:

Aw, you're all welcome! :goodvibes

We are all going to have an AWESOME time! Can't wait!!! :dance3:

Ok, so now we are all booked, and Finally Paid Off:woohoo:. Now we can start saving for the spend money ( oops No wait.... I forgot I have daughters so save for shopping then spend money LOL).

Things are really going good, I guess too good because their I am over a weekend in June in the yard for a nice weekend of cooking outside.... drinking a few brews and lounging in the pool.... I step off the deck and "WHAMM" :sad1: The pain from my knee is unbearable......

I limp around for a day, but can't walk on it the next so off do the Hospital I go.. The whole time thinking to myself, this all I need something major with more joints in my body with the cruise coming up in the horizon.....The ER doc thinks it is nothing, does some xrays, bloodwork to rule out infection and tells me not to worry.... Yeah right.. I still can't walk on the leg without limping hard.. I refuse to use crutches or anything else, I promised myself those days are over for me... What a jerk I am huh!!!!:). I finally call my doc and she sees me right away, get an MRI done more xrays... ANd the verdict is:

My knee has torn cartlidge (the good news)
My Knee has sufficient Bone damage and will need to be replaced.. (the bad news):sad1:

With me being young and already having more titanium and metal in me than Robin Williams had(from the movie he played that robot) my doc wants to just clean up the cartlidge through arthriscopic surgery ( hoping that will eliviate the major pain in my knee) and put off any talk of a replacement for at least a year.

Can I ask a Question

Does this stuff happen to everyone here or am I just that lucky??????

So its now July and my surgery is set for July 15 and all goes good :worship:Thank Goodness... But out of work for 3 weeks, of course the DW and DD's are not happy since it is there summer vacation..

More to follow later!!!!

UGH......... so sorry about the knee!!!! You are not immune. Stuff happens to us too!!! ;) Make sure to book your excursions early. I can see that 2 are already full, and Palo only has Monday available. I KNOW they also hold ressies that can be made on the ship.

YEAH!!!!! Your trip is all paid.....

p.s your daughters may want the Dooney purses on board. Something for them to save for! They are cute!!:thumbsup2

Wow--great report! I feel your pain in planning. I have been working on ours for 18 months. All 34 of us. (Well now 33--we had some problems along the way. A family member was diagnosed with cancer and passed away after his first Chemotherapy .--What a shock. Just as I was about to cancel his wife's reservation, I had a feeling to ask her if she still wanted to come. She is going to be sad either way so she might as well be surrounded by all her family)

We too cruise on Oct 30 on the Magic. This will be our 2nd Disney Cruise and my 10th cruise. (we discovered cruise about 3 years ago) I understand how it comes up in every conversation. People just want to know! We are living the dream!

Thanks

Forgot to say that she decided to come--her sister stepped up and will be rooming with her!

It has been no small feat getting everything booked--flights, hotel, transportation! But so worth it.

See you on board!
