It's always a very good idea to take all documentation with you, you just never know.

The bar code can be used (depending on the airline) to print boarding passes at an airport kiosk, etc. You can usually use your confirmation code as well, so I wouldn't worry.

I highly recommend online check-in and printing your boarding passes at home.

The last time we flew with United, I thought we had preselected seats (the tickets were bought through a codeshare from Air Canada) but did not. I was very surprised at how good the customer service was and we ended up sitting together on all of our flights.:)

Definitely do online check-in at home. I was on a flight in May where they had to remove 2 passengers from the plane due to weight & balance issues. No volunteers, so it was the last 2 people to check-in at the airport.

sometimes when I get email, not all the graphics, like bar codes, print out. There is usually a message near the top of the email that asks if I want it to print figures, etc., or sometimes I get a pop-up asking if I want the computer to show all that was sent or just the stuff the program can confirm. I don't know what it's all about, but if you open the email message that has your printable boarding passes, maybe you'll find this kind of question, too. I always say "yes" and then voila, there are the pictures, code bars, etc. It's annoying, and a little panic-provoking, for sure!

The bar code may be rendered using features that your printer or printer driver is not capable of handling. Updating the printer driver may help (if that's the cause of the issue) but most likely it is simply a matter that the printer can't print graphics rendered in that manner.
