Air Canada EWR to Vancouver

It seems that Air Canada's price from Newark to Vancouver is always $347 per person each way. I have been watching for months, and now that we are close to booking air for our Alaska cruise next July, I have started to look for any discount codes/coupons. Is anyone familar with Air Canada and knows if the price will ever fluctuate?

I know it's farther for you, but have you looked at JFK-YVR? I recall that one of the top airlines in the world, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, has traffic rights on that route.

On that route I have seen prices down to about $270, 350 was about the average and highs upto 500. They are big cities so you could take most airlines. Canada Air was sometimes the cheapest but for some days United, US Air, American and as mentioned above Continental. Flying from JFK will likely get you a better rate but how much would you pay to not have to cross over there? Granted if there is a few of you it may be worth renting a limo to do it.


If you want to hold out for a better rate you are gambling on oil prices because that is what fares are related to.

WOW - I would save almost $1200! That might be a possibility - although the times are definitely horrible. They were perfect on Air Canada.

I saw the terrible times. Actually the Continental flight is operated by Air Canada at the same price, however if you book on Continental you also pay extra for the bags.

Last summer Continental ran a flight on their own metal. I have no idea if the flight will be back in 2011.

A lot of budget conscious cruisers fly into SEA.

I checked 8/10. Air Canada has a flight that leaves 7a and Continental has a flight that leaves at 7:30a. Both are N/S flights. Both are offered by other airlines as a "code share".

Continental doesn't offer that flight year round. Continental may not have decided if they'll be offering the flight next summer.

I would not be booking an AC flight this far in advance - there will be a seat sale between now and then. Okay, there will most likely be a seat sale between now and then. It isn't a route I've flown, so I don't have a good sense of the pricing.

However, I do fly AC often and the only time I've booked that far in advance is when I want to be able to use an upgrade certificate on a competitive route (i.e. to Sydney). In that case though, I'd be buying a refundable ticket anyway.

BTW - if you are on a Continental plane, even if you book through Air Canada, you play by Continental's rules. In other words, if Continental charges for the first bag, you pay for the first bag (unlike AC which, at this point, gives the first bag free).

I'm not sure how it would work in this case but international flights usually get the first bag free. US to Canada crosses a border but a loose one so that's why I'm not certain about it.

Transborder flights (i.e. Canada/US) are usually clumped in with domestic US flights when determining baggage rules. I Just checked and Continental lumps US (except Hawaii), Canada, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands together.

All I know is that no matter how lousy the times, I'd be on that half-empty Boeing 777 operated by Cathy Pacific! (It picks up more passengers in Vancouver before continuing to HKG.) They are always rated in the top 3 airlines in the world and no baggage fees.

I did book it - had to ask my father in law about the airline (I never heard of it and he travels alot for work) and he said the same about being a top airline. I believe I can check 2 bags with no fees

I've flown the Cathay Pacific JFK-YVR, because it's the only nonstop from the NYC airports to Western Canada, and I'd do it again. Yes, the times are awful, since the main purpose of that flight is to reposition the plane for YVR-HKG, but the price is right, and the service on Cathay Pacific beats any North American carrier hands down.

And I get AA miles, which as I discovered years ago, are likely the most valuable FF miles out there.

The OP was thinking of taking the Air Canada N/S flight from EWR-YVR. Cathay Pacific isn't the only N/S from NYC to western Canada.

The airline may suit your needs but it's not the only nonstop flight. Continental is currently flying N/S EWR-YVR.

Have those been routes been operating for long? I remember last year having this same discussion and the only N/S option was Cathay Pacific. I was considering AC via YYZ, and then I found the CX fare.

Yes. I think, but I'm not 100% sure, Continental only runs the flight during the cruise season. It's possible whatever site you were using didn't include EWR when you checked for NYC flights.

I was using the ITA matrix based out of JFK, using all airports within 90 miles. Weird.
