We are booking a last minute trip and I plan on BFing my then 13mo old. I will purposely try with all my might to make sure she doesn't wean before then. No way do I want to deal with bottles. She has refused one since 3 months old and now I am just used to not having to pump/clean bottles.

My first self weaned at 10 months, she much prefered bottles and by then I was done with pumping - but this one is a ****ie lova I see no end in sight.

ETA: Haha - I had no idea dood (b's instead of d's) is a "bad" word on DIS - LOL!!!

I have to say this thread is a great thread. I BF DD who is now 5. I have never really BFed in public. I would pump and put in bottles. I have BF in the car in parking lots because she couldn't wait. My DH is trying to talk me into another one. This one would be BF as well and I will have to learn to do it in public if we are going to take any trip as it is so much easier than the pumping and bottles. I would still have to pump as I have to work. There are so many great tips in the thread.

I have officially stopped pumping at work! Yesterday was my first day. We have enough milk stored for probably 2 months and then she'll switch to regular milk when I'm at work. No plans to force her to wean or anything though...yet.

Congrats! I am off work for the summer, but I am considering not pumping when I go back. I don't have a ton of frozen milk, just a couple of weeks worth, but my DS will be 11 1/2 months and the doctor said we could introduce whole milk then. If he is on the same schedule as now, I could still nurse 3 times per day and give one whole milk feeding when the frozen milk is gone.

I am on the fence about when to totally wean. I love nursing him, he loves nursing, I don't see him choosing to wean any time soon. So we shall see. Part of me would love to have my body back and I have had a really hard time losing weight while nursing. (Baby weight is long gone, but I have more to lose) But he is my last baby and I have really enjoyed nursing him. It will be a tough decision!

Welcome! You will find great information here! I went back to work 4 days/week when my DS was 12 weeks. I was able to make pumping work and he has not had to have formula supplements at all- he is almost 10 months now. If you have specific questions about pumping to maintain your supply while away from your baby, I am willing to help. Happy baby planning!!!!

I quit pumping back in late March. Katie started refusing the bottle at daycare, and I was pouring out her bottles every day. Too painful. She went to sippy cups of milk, but saved up most of her drinking for when I picked her up! I cleaned out the deep freezer this week and threw out a huge bag of frozen milk. That was like a knife to the heart, but at almost 14 mos if something happended to me she wouldn't need the breast milk.

I don't see Katie ever self weaning. She loves nursing! I teach, and have been home for 5 wks now for the summer. She would stay attached all day if I let her. I go back in 4 wks, and plan to keep nursing mornings and evenings until around Thanksgiving. After that, dh wants me to stop. She is my last baby, so I just don't know.....

Any suggestions about what to do with a biter? My DS is 10 months today and bit me really badly this morning. He is teething- cutting 6 teeth at once! When my 2nd bit me at 11 months, I stopped nursing because he drew blood every time. I am not ready to stop bfiing and I don't want to pump every feeding if possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

so happy i found this thread - love the disboards! i will be bringing my 5 1/2 old to disney in october and have been stressing about breastfeeding. breastfeeding in public has not been easy for me. DS is already pushing 15 pounds at 9 weeks and is over 24 inches long. i am extremely short and petite (DS gets it all from dad). so not only does DS eat A LOT but breastfeeding is a two hand sitting down job at all times. i am committed to exclusive breastfeeding and really hoping to make it to 6 months. any tips for someone in my situation? i do pump and give him a bottle at times.

First of all, if you watch him really close while he is nursing you can tell right before he gets ready to do it. His jaw changes and you can quickly move him off before he clamps down. Also if he does bite you, take him off, say "NO!" firmly and set him down on the floor. This is what I did with my daughter and it seemed to work. She bit me so bad one day it brought tears to my eyes and hurt for a few days afterwards. Not fun!

He's a new guy (congrats!) so I'd hold off on the bottles until your milk supply is more established, closer to 6 weeks. It's totally normal and to be expected for newborns to nurse .all the time, like every 2 hrs or more. It is def a 2 hand job while you're getting the swing of it, and he's so small. Once he gets better head control, it will get easier. Do you use a nursing pillow? I'd highly recommend one if you don't! (I used a Boppy)

You guys are going in a few months...he'll be eating a little less (more like every 3 hrs probably) and you'll be a pro by then!

Ditto!!!! DD had 7 teeth before she was 1, and she was the only one who would really bite. I learned to anticipate when she'd do it (when she got drowsy,etc) and unlatch her beforehand.

I was super sore, so I started putting the lanolin back on. At one point she made a cut, and then it was super sore and took awhile to heal. She did outgrow it, and does not bite now. (she's 13 mo)

Have I mentioned how happy I am that Katie (almost 14 mos) has NO teeth yet! There are some signs of her bottom front teeth now, and I'm sure I'll be her teething ring soon!

Hey all! I'm a retired Dairy Queen now, but I just wanted to lend support/encouragement to those breastfeeding in Disneyworld. I didn't breastfeed my first three in the parks(only because we hadn't been to Disney yet), but did breasfeed my last one there when he was a toddler. I did get some funny looks for nursing my 2 year old, but I was so glad I was nursing him while we there. He wound up catching a nasty tummy virus and had to be hospitalized in Orlando due to dehydration. They wanted to him to eat some nasty bright orange popsicles in the hospital, which he promptly vomited up. The doctor's and nurses weren't so thrilled with my nursing and actually discouraged me from doing it, but the only thing that stayed in was mommy's milk! Breastmilk to the rescue! So I just want to encourage you guys not to be embarassed breastfeeding in public. It really is the best thing for your child.

I really hope to have DS weaned before we go again next June (he is 15 months now). However, I am really struggling getting him to even consider weaning. He says "milk" (in his own way) and if I tell him no, he starts sobbing. I have tried replacing with a cup of milk, and that is a no go. Any other ideas???

Yep-he was starting to doze right before he bit. I did take him off and put him down like you suggested, so hopefully it made an impression. I will keep an eye out when he starts slowing down. Thanks!

I started slowly weaning DS at 15 or 18 months...basically if he asked to nurse during a nonsleep associated time (like just because I was around LOL) I'd get up and offer a snack and sippy of milk or juice. Most of the time that made him happy. If it didn't, I would go ahead and nurse him.

I'm getting a little worried about Katie weaning, too. She LOVES to nurse. Would do it all day. And nothing distracts her. I have to go back to work in 3 wks (teacher), so maybe I can get her on a schedule then, morning, afternoon, and night, then start tapering off around Nov (that is the plan anyway-nursing until 18mos). I don't know that I will be ready to wean by then, since she is my last.....
