:rotfl:

The thought always crosses my mind that I should be somewhere warmer, and then I get off the plane in Orlando and the humidity shuts my breathing down. My reason #1 why I'll never be able to live in Florida. I dream of being a snowbird some day though. January to April or so down there, the rest of the year up North. I'd be happy!

That is my goal in life. 6 months up here, 6 months down there. :cloud9:

Oh come on - snow is awesome - just don't DRIVE in it!

I am one of the few people on the planet that when retirement comes, I hope to spend a winter someone cool, hilly, and covered in fresh powder, NOT somewhere warm and sunny.

OK, sometimes even I get sick of it...and it certainly doesn't endear itself when it screws up your vacation plans...but I would take 4 months of winter over 4 months of Florida summer. We spend a week down there in 2007 and 2008, and while I found it more tolerable than I thought, i really can't stand being sweaty every moment of every day. I would be cooped up inside wayyyy more in Florida in summer than I am here in wintertime!

I can see your point in the sense that if you're retired and don't have to drive in the snow, then it's not a big deal.

I used to LOVE snow. Until I started working for a bank that rarely if ever closes during inclement weather and had to drive in it. Blech! :lmao:

I have no desire to be in Florida in the summers permanently. My grandmother has been there for about 8 years now, still complains bitterly over it. :rotfl: It hasn't grown on her at all.

I don't even really mind the snow, it's just the horrible ice storms that drive me crazy. I really need to have different seasons to be happy. At the end of every summer, I'm always sick of the heat, and happy to be pulling out my cold weather clothes, and at the end of every winter I'm just as happy for the warmth. I don't know if I could ever really live where there wasn't a change of seasons.

I know what you mean. I love working in NYC, but in the winter it's tough. Nothing ever closes for bad weather. In the city it's not bad, because they cart all the snow away nearly as soon as it hits the ground. You'd never know a blizzard was happening. But I have to go home, and drive home later. They never let us leave early. So sad!

I hear you! It's like an alternate universe, NYC all pretty and clean, home, not so much! :lmao:

After a long day hanging around the hotel, I think we were all almost glad for it to be time to go to bed. About midway throught the day I went online to cancel the two ADRs that we weren't going to be able to make. I had to cancel our ADR for that night at the Rose and Crown, and our ADR for the next day at Boma. There was no way we were going to make either of them. :sad1:

We awoke the next day, happy to see that other than a few flurries, the snow had stopped.

A quick check online showed us that our flight was still scheduled to take off on time. We had a free breakfast at the hotel, and then were heading out the door at about noon. We were going to have a lot of time at the airport, but we figured that it was going to be a bit crazy there and we didn't want to take any chances.

When I had done my online check in the day before, we had hit a bit of a glitch when the system wouldn't assign my father a seat. I had called Jet Blue and they assured me that he would have a seat on the plane, as they do not overbook their flights. The problem was that since the only seats still available were the extra room seats that require an additional fee. If no one chose to upgrade before my father had checked in he would get one of those seats, other wise he would get the regular seat that someone had bumped up from. It made sense, but we were a bit wary. No problems though at the airport. My parents actually ended up with bulkhead seats, just on opposite sides of the aisle. I ended up with the lousiest seat, a center seat towards the back of the plane. Still we were just thrilled to actually be getting on a plane.

It turned out to be a good thing we got there early. The airport was crazy with wall to wall people all over the place. White Plains airport is a really tiny airport. The seating area in the boarding area is about the size of one gate MCO. With all the flights leaving completely sold out they weren't even letting you through TSA into the boarding area until about a half hour or so before your flight boarded. I felt horrible for some of the people flying on the other airlines that did overbook their flights. We kept hearing announcements from them looking for people to give up their spots on the flight. Jet Blue did a lot this trip, to earn my repeat business, this was the first. I'm so glad we didn’t' have to worry if we'd be getting on the plane or not. We took our time having a bite to eat at the coffee shop on the second level, and then found some quiet seats nearby. I don't know if people just didn't realize there was a second level, but it was a nice peaceful spot. There was a lot more sitting around.

Our flight actually ended up taking off just about on time, and we landed in a pretty chilly Orlando at about 6pm. I am so not used to arriving in Orlando at night, and it felt really strange to be getting there when it was dark. My parents had booked their trip with a package, but we had never officially added me on to the reservation so I had to go to claim my suitcase. It made me realize how spoiled ME has made me. We lucked out, and my suitcase was one of the first ones off the plane. Suitcase in hand we headed over to the ME area, where I had to go to the Mears counter to purchase a ticket to get to the resorts. Luckily, as it was later, and pretty slow I was put on the same shuttle as my parents. We had to wait a bit on board the bus, while they waited for more people to fill the bus. It never happened, and finally we took off. :cheer2:

Ahhh!!!! After all the travel difficulties, and delays arriving at POFQ felt like we were coming home. I can't think of another place I would have wanted to check in that night. I love the Boardwalk, and I'd never turn down a stay at any of them, but POFQ is my Disney home away from home. It was the perfect place to be that night.

Check in went smoothly, and we got a great room in building #5 that faced away from the pool. Not that anyone was in the pool, it was way too cold. Our room was nice, but it was looking a bit worn in a few spots. The bathroom particularly, but it was squeaky clean.

We had to do a bit poking around before heading out to grab something to eat.

I think this was the first time ever I've eaten a meal other than breakfast at POFQ. The food was pretty good. I had ordered my food and while I was waiting, another guest took my food, because she didn't want to wait for hers. :headache:The CM working at the counter apologized, and after making me another one had the cashier give me my meal for free. I thanked him, and told him it wasn't necessary but he insisted.

Being at POFQ any meal wasn't complete until it was finished with some of these -

Beignets! So, so good!

I can only imagine the relief that you must have felt at arriving at POFQ.

It's almost like once you get there you feel like you can breathe again, right?

Except not all over the beignets. Because then you'd have white powdered sugar everywhere. ;) God, I miss those. I'd love some right now. :thumbsup2

You made it there!! In all my trips except 2004 I always arrived in the evenings. I love that feel of getting there just to go to bed and then wake up in the morning and see the resort in daylight for the first time! :goodvibes To me it adds to the excitement!

How is your training going? HAve you managed to start your plan? I really should post this on your PTR not here... :rolleyes1 But I hope you will answer anyway! ;)

It must of felt really good to finally get to Orlando. We're driving down at the end of the month in Feb (2011) and I've already planned it in a way that we can leave NH a day early if there is a storm coming.

BTW....I was wrong....I'm about a 2 hour drive from Storyland (we are going Wednesday )

Ahhhh, sweet relief of being in Orlando.

While I loved the beignets at POFQ, I have a severe problem with all that powdered sugar. It kinda freaks me out. I feel like I'm going to choke on it. And that is a little glimpse into the inner workings of my brain. :rolleyes1

Whew! So glad you finally made it to POFQ! It must have been such a relief finally boarding the plane and then arriving in Orlando!

Yeay for all the great pictures of POFQ! We so loved our two stays there! :lovestruc

It was such a relief. Once we got there my mom and I were admitting to each other, how we didn't really think we'd be getting there any time soon. I don't think any of us really wanted to admit to ourselves how easily we could have found ourselves flightless for a few days had we not got out the day after.

I could go for some of those beignets right about now too.

It really was a completely different feeling arriving then. It really was an easier way to ease into a Disney vacation. Much more laid back then when I arrive at 10 am and am in the park by noon. :) It really helped set the tone for our entire vacation.

My training plan starts this week, although I am tempted to try something new. I should be doing a post about that soon. It's coming up so fast!!

My brother's place is right near Storyland. :) They are practically right next door to Attitash. I haven't made it to Storyland yet, but I'm hoping for a trip with the nieces this summer. I'm curious to see the place, as I haven't been there since I was a little kid.

They do go a bit crazy with the powdered sugar. I have to knock quite a bit of it off. My dad though managed to add most of what I didn't eat to his. :rotfl:

I never realized how spoiled I had been that all my years of traveling, I had never been hit with any real delays or problems of any kind. I find traveling energy zapping anyways, so the delays and cancellations were playing havoc with me.

I don't know why POFQ feels so homey to me. Maybe it's because it's the first place I ever stayed on vacation that I had planned myself without my family with me. I definitely find it so comforting to be there, and I love the small size of the place.

It's like that Malibu sign is screaming, "DRINK ME!"
I'd likely have obliged. LOL

I had no idea that was behind me until I saw the pics. I should have listened to it. :)

Oh, these look SO GOOD. If all goes as tentatively planned for next Feb., I'll be wandering over to POFQ for some of these!

They are so worth a trip over to get some!

OT, I know, but all of this talk of Story Land is making me miss Benson's Animal Farm.

And Lincoln Park.

And Rocky Point.

::sigh::

:sad1:

K. Back to the regularly scheduled programming.

When I was up in NH last year, it's amazing how little so much of it seems to have changed. Although one of my favorite spots as a kid, Natureland, is now a water slide park. :sad2: Walking the Flume I felt like a little kid again. I don't remember Benson's though. We must have missed that one.

I just got through your last two updates. I am so sorry the snow had you so delayed!! We got our fair share of snow this winter and had to actually reschedule our Christmas gatherings. :( Dumb snow.

I think POFQ would be a perfect place to be after all of that craziness. Can't wait to read more!!

That ended up being the last snowstorm of the year. I was more than happy to see the begining of spring this year.
