Well I would dyed it once the skirt is already made so you'll get the pattern on the skirt, you know the tie dye pattern.

I'm not familiar with those dyes so Im not sure, but if you think you might next extra dye go ahead and get some.

We're headed to Disney for Halloween and I'm trying to talk DH into getting some of your shirts to wear to MNSSHP...

Well I have been reading this thread for like a month and keep trying and trying to make these shirts but no good turn out yet-- I have messed up probably about 20 shirts. I haven't tried the Dharma/jacquard dye yet b/c I just live in a small town and am just trying to use what I have available. So tonight I am going to try another with the Rit dye but I am going to try the soda ash thing with it. I am having a real hard time with the dye running once I put it in the wash....

I rinse and rinse and rinse until the water is clear (at this point the dye has not bled) but as soon as I put it in the washing machine it bleeds and the color fades. I am going to Disney in August and it will be our first trip so I really really want to have these made but I have already spent a fortune trying to get the technique down so now I have been fortunate enough to have friends and family supply me with their old 100% cotton white tshirts.

Wish me luck on tonights project and pray that the colors don't bleed.

Well the soda ash only works with the fiber reactive dye, but you can try. Good luck.

YES!! Tulip is fiber reactive. I recomended you to use the Soda Ash with the tulip I know the dye has the soda ash already but I always use it, soak them, then squeeze excess water, fiber reactive dye MUST BE wet to get "fix". For more intense colors with the tulip fill the bottle half way or at least a 1/4 from the top of the bottle.

Take your time and you'll be fine... you got my e-mail let me know if you need help..

These shirts are wonderful!! I just tie-dyed for the first time with my son's 1st grade class. We made shirts for them to wear on their beach field trip. So much fun!!! We are off to Disney in Aug. so I'm going to give Mickey shirts a try.

My daughter wants a sun dress. Any suggestions on where to find a 100% cotton simple, white tank dress? Seems all the places I look are either not 100% cotton or they already have designs and colors.

Well I did the tulip dye last night, I only filled the bottles half way through so I hope that they turn out really bright. I used pink and purple on mine and pink, purple and blue on my daughters - only b/c we ran out of pink and purple - bummer b/c I really wanted us to be matching .

The directions say to rinse then launder in warm water-- anyone have experience with the tulip, when I washed the rit ones in warm water they bled and I really don't want these to bleed. Also with the tulip do you keep rinsing until the water runs clear or just rinse while taking the rubberbands off and then put in the wash?

I am really really hoping these turn out, I will be really aggrevated if they don't as this is what feels like my 200th attempt. I really soaked them to so hoping that I won't have much white -so we will see. I know on they edges that my colors ran together some but I don't mind that, I just didn't want much white. This was also my first time doing a spiral so that should be interesting in itself.

Washing soda, sodium carbonate, is an alkaline with a pH of 11, and while it doesn't give off harmful fumes, you do need to wear gloves. It is found in the laundry section of most supermarkets. Arm & Hammer is one brand; Shop and Save has a generic house brand. It is also known as Soda Ash. You can also buy it from swimming pool supply stores; a popular brand is pH up. This is not the same thing as baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate. Though similar, sodium carbonate is a much stronger base.

So I would say yes, they are the same...

Haha I see that is says to wear gloves -- I did not wear gloves when doing the ringing of the shirts with the soda ash and my hands felt really funky, then when I was dying apparently my index finger on my glove got a hole so now it is purple-- hope I didn't permantely dye myself

Do you all use pencils to trace your mickey head? I have been using colored pencils - I have tried the mechanical and regular but it takes forever to trace so... I started using a colored pencil and much more simple -- I made sure to match the same color of pencil with whatever color I am doing the mickey head just in case it doesn't wash out and since this was the first time of using soda ash wasn't sure how a colored pencil would react to it.

Has anyone used dye strings? I bought a kit and along with the liquid dye it has 8 dye strings.

According to the directions you soak the shirts for 20 minutes in soda ash. Then substitute rubber bands for tie0dye strings for any technique. It says "tie-dye strings give a softer look to all of these designs, since the string absorbs a portion of the dye instead of completely blocking it off from the fabric." Once your fabric is wrapped in the strings wrap the cloth in an old rag or a paper towel to make a bundle. This outer layer will absorb the excess dye later on. Add the bundle to the soda ash mixture and let sit for 20 minutes.

So do I also add liquid dye in addition to the strings?
