Has anyone been able to tap into any free wi fi in wdw to avoid data roaming charges on their mobile phone. I got a £180 monthly mobile phone bill the last time I went out!

There's no 'official' free wifi in the parks but you may accidentally come across some that's not secured.
I don't think the resorts have it either. There's tons of it offsite tho, in all the usual places - Starbucks, offsite hotels etc.

While in wdw tho, probably best to leave your phone in the safe :)

:scared1:

I do as Luke suggests and don't use mine. I also let anyone know not to contact me unless it is an emergency. I do keep it with me, but most family members just send the occasional text (40 p to receive and the same cost to reply). If you want to keep in touch with one another in the parks, maybe have a look at walkie talkies?

oh Lee, i was about to say that:lmao:
we had walkie talkies delivered with our shop last year, and have purchased "4" set for this holiday, so the boys can wonder off to the pool if they want without us...
walkie talkies are def the way to go, we had our mobiles the first day when we were seperated and that was it, used the walkie talkies the rest of the time (a small heads up, if they have a short span, they will not reach from one side of the mk to the other, you need to walk into the hub to contact be contacted...
epcot was ok, as we knew roughly which bit the other would be in and ak/hs are more compact so ok...
they also worked at the malls;), though less zone due to walls:cool2:
we left our mobiles in the safe too, less risk of losing them..
tracy

There you go - advice from someone with experience!

DD has only just turned 8. Any request for solo time at this stage would be met with a categorical "NO!" :rotfl: That said, I may actually give her one of my mobiles to keep on her while there this time so that in the unlikely event of us ever being separated she would be able to use it.

We use net 10 phones to communicate with each other and phone home whilst in Florida. I took my blackberry this time as I needed to check for business e-mails and logged in regularly whilst off-site at Panera Bread where we often had lunch and also at Borders book shops as these both had free Wi-Fi and were easily accessible.

my boys are nearly 13 and going on thirty and 10, i would let them go to the pool if it was close (last year the pool was about 25m away "behind" our room, so i couldnt see them, but boy could i hear them;), if its too far then dh or i would go.
grace will be 8 a few weeks after we go and i agree, my answer to her would be no too, she does have 2 guardian angels in the shape of her brothers who "walk" her to her friends houses round here, and then fetch her after, i dont mind if she is with her friends, but i dont like her going anywhere alone...
i think its about common sense, id let them do the single rider queue with us on the condition dh went 1st to "catch" them and i went last to make sure they exited the buidling lol
hopefully we wont need to do single riders, hey;), isnt all this planning to avoid queues??

Didn't they trial wifi at the waterparks a few years back? I don't recall if it tookk off though!

Just one of the downfalls to being alone with a young child- and no siblings to stick together. Never mind, we thrive on all the positives - so we get to spend all our time together when we go there. Now for us, that is not a bad thing. :)

I just thought she may feel grown up and responsible with her phone for a purpose and she would get to keep it for at home too.

Regarding the US mobiles, quite a few people have posted on here that they are a good deal compared to using roaming - especially if you need a few.

£180 - ouch! There was pparently free wifi at McDonalds in Downtown Disney but now that's closed I've not heard of anywhere. We're going in a couple of weeks and Mrs would like wifi for her iphone too - I think it may just be the ocasional check for texts but for anything else it may just need to be brought with us when we go to off property to Florida Mall.

did you arrange in advance for a special roaming package for your travel?
someone told me i should look into doing that, but i haven't yet...

My carrier O2 has a pre-order bolt on package for travelling abroad.
It is £20 for 20mb or £50 for 50mb. Not that great IMHO as you could easily use this amount of data :)

I have saved a list from various sites for 'claimed' free wifi
Beach Club lobby
Contempory Resort lobby
M.K. Main Street USA
M.K. outside City Hall guest relations
M.K. Sleepy Hollow snack bar
EPCOT Innoventions East - near to university of energy exit
Blizzard Beach - in main entrance gift shop
DHS - between Brown Derby & scourcerers hat
Universal hotels - lobbys

Tried some of these last month, and couldn't find any :sad1:
Don't know about the hotel lobbies, but MK, Epcot, Blizzard Beach, and DHS I definitely couldn't find any.
The only time I got some was sitting out the (back / front?) of the Boardwalk Inn on the Boardwalk, in the grassy area with the benches at the side. I got some free WiFi there, but it was probably someone in a hotel room with their laptop on, and unprotected WiFi running! ;)

Just keep trying, you might be lucky, but don't rely on it being there.

As a guide to cost, I logged on to my FairFx account two or three times while not using free WiFi, and that cost about £12 - and O2 were charging me £6 per MB.

Hope this helps.

Damn:headache:
I was hoping somewhere in the world would have free wifi. I swear I read a while back that you could get connection at Contemp but by the sounds of it that's not true

Looks like we ll have to visit Mc Ds in Crossroads few times when we re out there then:thumbsup2
We ll probably end up placing an order whilst we re out there from Disney Shopping if they release any great new pins. We always place an
order before we go but wanna keep an eye out just in case there's any great new 1s

Disney needs free wifi:rotfl:

We stayed at the Yacht club last October and free wifi was available in lobby area, same with the Beach club.

Hi we're just back and tried a lot of the locations above, with little success. The Dolphin had it but that depends on if there is a conferene on (they open it up for them). The one place we did get it was the McDonalds at Crossroads have it when you go in. Otherwise innoventions at the IBM area have it in Epcot.
