Mama Melrose Vs Sci-Fi Diner

We have an ADR for Mama Melrose for our DHS day. However, I am not excited about it at all. I really want to go to Sci-Fi Diner but I am concerned about one thing -- the movies they play. My girls get scared by monsters and aliens. So, I am worried that they will end up freaked out and not want to eat and the whole experience will be ruined. So, that is why we booked Mama Melrose instead. (I know I am going to have a tough time with some of the other scary things we will encontour while we are there anyways -- don't want to add more, ya' know?!)

So to my questions:
1. How scary are the movies?
2. How is Mama Melrose?
3. How is the food at Sci-Fi?
4. Which would you chose?

Thanks!!

It's always difficult to determine how scary something may be for someone else's kid's, but Sci-Fi only shows clips of old "B" type sci-fi movies. They seem to be the promo teasers that would have been shown as "coming soon" to the old theaters. Most are kinda cheesy and rather funny. Each time I've eaten there, I've always seen lots of kids and they always seem to be enjoying it. The atmosphere to me is the biggest draw as it's just a fun place to eat, but I feel the food is just OK. I do enjoy going there.

I've read lots of reviews on Mama Melrose and they seem to be rather mixed. My daughter and I happen to love the atmosphere and the food and it's one of our favorite places to eat.

Sci-Fi and Mama Melrose are totally different dining experiences to me, but I've never taken children to either place.

Never been to MM but we ate at Sci-Fi in Nov and it was terrible. I can honestly say we will never eat there again...the place is very cool and I didn't think the movies were too bad but the food was less than average and I even had the burger everyone raves about.

1. Really hard to say, because scary is different for everyone. But we took our older boys to sci-fi for the first time when they were 5 and 6, and they enjoyed it. Now they are pre-teens, and they didn't really want to go back because although it was fun once, they didn't like the old movies and wished the movies/clips were Disney themed. Our youngest was there for the first time at age 2, and he didn't pay much attention to the movies (again, no recognizable Disney characters, etc.) so it didn't bother him. But he's pretty used to monsters/aliens because he has older brothers!

2. We love Mama Melrose! It's not as themed as sci-fi, but it's a relaxed atmosphere, and we enjoy the food. Not the best ever, but good - we've been there multiple times and will continue to return. During our last trip in March, the CMs were particularly friendly. We also like that it's tucked away in a corner and seems more like a retreat from the park than other restaurants.

3. We have enjoyed sci-fi for lunch in the past - flavored cokes and burgers were good and it was fun to try at least once. But as I mentioned, our kids aren't asking to return. I'm usually pretty positive about most WDW restaurants, but we did not enjoy the food at all when we've been to sci-fi for dinner. If we ever returned, it would most definitely be for lunch and not dinner. (Although some have mentioned that you can ask to order lunch items at dinner time.)

4. Mama Melrose!!

We have been to both with out daughter now 9 she is a big chicken lol and she was not afraid of the movies. They have the blob and an alien advertisement and i think thats all for scary movies but they last like 30 seconds. They have a few classic cartoons like tom and Jerry, the cat that went to the moon and a guy who didnt believe in aliens. They are cute movies. LOL as you can tell we have been a few times. We enjoy the atmosphere mostly. My DH is a burger guy so we love going there. I usually order the beef and blue dinner it amuses me it is literally a 1/4 wedge head of lettuce with beef and blue cheese lol But It tastes great.

Mama Melrose is better without kids but the food is great there. They had performers there the couple times we have been. I had Chicken Pipette and LOVE it!! If you are looking to compare menu items as well you coudl go to www.allears.net they have all the Restaurants listed and their menus with prices.

Hope this helps you :)

How scary are the movies? not scary at all in my opinion. It's Disney they can't be to scary.
2. How is Mama Melrose? Good
3. How is the food at Sci-Fi? Not good for dinner anymore. Lunch yes.
4. Which would you chose? MM no ?

1. How scary are the movies?
THe movies are not really scary at all. The movie clips are also really short. My 5 year old who is scared of everything did not have any issues with the movies played.

2. How is Mama Melrose?
I liked the food at Mama Melrose.

3. How is the food at Sci-Fi?
The food is not too good here. I did have a milkshake that was really good, though.

4. Which would you chose?
Tough, but I would chose Sci-Fi for the experience. Your girls will have fun there.

You can't beat the atmosphere at Sci-Fi!!!! Honestly the movie clips are really not scary at all. My kids loved it! The food is tasty (burgers, ribs, and reubens) and the milkshakes are awesome!!! Sci-Fi is tied with 50's Primetime as my 2 favorites at DHS - they both have yummy food and terrific atmosphere!!!! Good luck deciding - my vote goes with Sci-Fi!!!!!:thumbsup2

On our last trip we travelled with another family whose kids were afraid of everything, but they weren't bothered in the least by the movies at Sci Fi. The clips are more silly than scary.

We have eaten at both. You may get better food at Mama Melrose, but the atmosphere at Sci Fi is so cool. The food is just 'meh'. So you'll have to decide which is more important, better food or better atmosphere.

My kids have been eating at Sci-Fi diner since they were 2 & 3, and were not scared at all of the movies. It's one of their must-do's of every trip.

As for the food? If you stick with burgers, fries or onion rings and milkshakes, then you'll get a great meal.:thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 Perfect answer above.
But, I think Sci Fi is a great lunch spot and MM better for dinner. You're in WDW...do both:banana:

So to my questions:
1. How scary are the movies? - Seriously not scary, look for a B-rated movie from that era at your local Blockbuster and rent it. (It will most likely be the least expensive rental you will ever do!:lmao:)

2. How is Mama Melrose? - This is our family hidden jewel. We have been 4 times, never had bad service or bad food. It is more of a relaxing atmosphere than Sci-Fi though, it is really not a "childrens" choice, but they will definetely like the food, just have some crayons and paper ready.

3. How is the food at Sci-Fi? - Not great, not horrible, but it is extrememly SALTED. With the exception of dessert the salt over-ran the whole meal there, BOTH TIMES.

4. Which would you chose? - For a relaxing meal that everyone will enjoy - Mama Melrose. For a cute, the kids will remember but be hungry an hour later - Sci-Fi.

Thanks!!

Whichever you choose, I hope you enjoy your meal.

We enjoyed Sci Fi because of the atmosphere several years ago. But there's a lot that we don't like about it... limited menu, can't really have a nice conversation since you are in cars all facing the same direction, the film loop is short enough that it will repeat while you are there. Mama Melrose isn't the best thing since sliced bread, but we found our food to be particularly tasty and the atmosphere pleasantly relaxed. Sci Fi is probably more fun for kids, but the adults will appreciate the quality of food at MM more.
