My account has only 876 miles in it at the moment. Used them all up last time.

We are flying to Orlando in Sept 2011 and I can't make my mind up if its worth buying miles to make the fares cheaper.

My thinking is that you need 45,000 miles for a free flight.

There are four of us, 2 adults, 2 kids - any ideas?

We do the miles plus money deal when we can, which saves up approximately £2400.00 on the total fare if we book the day the flights are released of course

That's good, any advice what I could do? The cost of the flights is the major consideration for us.

Not sure if I can offer you advice as such but our situation is this. As frequent October travellers to Florida we gain approximately 11k mile per trip or around that figure anyways.

Within 3 years we are then usually only 10k mile short of doing the miles plus money deals that Virgin Offer for our next October trip.

So as an example this year I have in the bank 36K miles, that have cost me no money whatsoever as I have simply accrued then from our previous trips. Next October it is going to cost us around £6500k for us all to fly PE, thats based on this years figures. If I today bought say 15K worth of miles that would cost me £206.45. That would then mean that in October, when it comes to booking our flights I will be able to purchase the miles plus money seats and get our flights down to £4600.00 ish as from past recolection I believe you have to have 7500 mile per travelling passenger for PE.

With this current offer I have purchased the full 30k as for just under £400.00 its seems daft not to for us. You must bare in mind though that miles can expire, but I'm not to sure how this works, my account states that it will expire in 2012, but I'm not sure if that changes if I continue to use the account if that makes any sense, ie if you did not use Virgin for three years you lose your miles or if you continue to use Virgin yearly then the miles continue to accrue Not sure on that one, maybe someone else can help here.

Thats like asking "should I buy my $'s now?" or "what will the weather be like at Xmas?"
I probably wouldn't buy just hoping to use them, I would wait until I saw an offer and buy then if needed but as we travel in school hols its not easy to use them anymore.

The activity on the account doesn't need to be flying activity. There are all sorts of ways to earn Flying Club miles.

I earned many miles by asking friends and colleagues to join the Virgin flying club when booking their flights. You need to send them the referral email from the Virgin website, they complete it and when they fly you get your miles. This gives you miles and pushes back the expiry date on your miles. I've been collecting for 6 years and only just used mine.

I might sound a bit dim here but dont virgin have to release the M+M seats in order to use the miles unless buying a oneway or return trip with miles alone?? I looked continually for 2 months everyday for m+m in september and october and nothing. I would like to upgrade to PE this trip and would buy the extra miles to do this. Would I have to phone VA to do this and how many miles would it be????

Its correct, 2 x PE reward seats are 150,000 miles
GBP 548.20 Tax, Fees and surcharges for all passengers

Or 75,000 + £274.10pp
