Anybody been to this area? Where did you stay and was it a great family trip? We just returned from Disney and are scheduling a trip for a group of 9 for August. Any suggestions?

but...db and I attended many a year of 4-H camp at Deep Creek Lake. We did outdoor stuff like; canoeing, swimming, sports, campfires, archery, riflery, hiking. We were at the camp and stayed in cabins. There is not alot of places close by to go to for anything as far as I know, so it may entail bringing alot of things to provide for yourselves.

Closest places to the area are Cumberland, MD and Frostburg, MD or Morgantown, WV (Go Mountaineers!)...all about 40 min or so away.

Here's some links to help --

never "vacationed" there, lol but have spent a lot of time there - I was born & raised there, and now live about an hour away. I don't know a lot from the tourist perspective, but if you have any questions let me know!

Thanks for the responses. We're hoping to rent something on the lake with at least 4 bedrooms. The are is large and we'd like to know if there is a better area to stay in in terms of activities and access to restaurants/groceries, etc. We are a party of nine and want to do something relaxing but it does have to have a few "amusements" for the kids. We were thinking fishing, mini golf, hanging out by the lake. We will make a side trip to WVU to start some very early college scouting for our oldest.

I have never been...but a friend of mine goes every July with her entire extended family. I had never heard of it, except for from her! They rent a house on the lake....they grill out, swim, boat, water ski, jet ski, lots of outdoor things....they love it. And I have seen her pictures...it looks gorgeous there!!!!!!

We camped out there with Cub Scouts years ago. I'm going back next weekend for a convention!

We rented a huge beautiful log cabin home on the lake about 3 years ago there. It was a lot of fun. We had a boat dock right off the yard so it was really conveinent. The ride into town was not that far..maybe 10-15 mins. They had some cute shops, places to eat, mini golf and a little amuesment place that had go carts, boats etc. The water is obviously colder there so I would go in the middle of the summer or later so you can really use the lake. We were there in mid June and it was still pretty cool out. HTH

I just reread your post and saw it said you were going in August so that should be a great time to go. There are several big log cabin type homes for rent in that area that would accomodate your group. We had 7 in ours and still had lots of space where we could of had more.

Did you got through a website that you would recommend for the rental? I'm always leary of using a site that I just "found" through a search.

Do you know who they rent from? That's exactly the type of trip we are planning. My parents, My gang & Brother + kids get together every August. Parents used to have a beach house but decided a few years ago to sell and we want to try other places for vacation. So the first year we did Gatlinburg, last year bro's family came "Home" (just outside Philadelphia in DE) and we did a few things in Philly and went to Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos for two nights. This year we're want to meet somewhere again for a getaway. So this would be "kind of" a midpoint. Thanks for the info!

I really don't remember what website it was on. I know my husband just happened to find it. I even went and looked back thru our album to see if I had written down the address or anything. Sorry. If I find out I will let you know.
