HI!
My family just started running (jogging and walking really) using one of the couch to 5k programs. We are still in week one, but hope to complete the program sometime this summer.

Just wondered if there were other families out there who train together. There are only three of us (me-41, DH -42, and DD - 8), but even between the three of us, keeping pace together can sometimes be a challenge. The fun part is finishing the workout together.

Our goal is to run our first 5k at Disney this fall.

It would sure be nice to hear from other families that may be doing the same thing...

Empty nesters here so family for us is DW and myself. We had a bad accident almost 4 years ago and a goal we had was to walk a 5K when on a cruise last year and then the 2010 Family Fun Run 5K . Did them and started talking about expanding on that for the 2011 WDW Marathon Weekend. We are now registered for W&D in Oct., Space Coast 1/2 Marathon in Nov. and the 2011 5K and 1/2 Marathon together in Jan. and I will also be in the Full Marathon.

We a not running as so many people want to do. Our goals are to walk the distances comfortably. We see no need to over stress our 60yo bodies any more than is necessary. I am quite a bit more physically fit than DW so I just tone down my speed so we can walk together and talk and talk and talk. We are having lots of FUN and DW has just walked a personal best at 8 miles.

We are also taking a hint from my training for a bicycle race I competed in in Central Park some 28 years ago. I drew a large map of Central Park and having been there before I noted where there were hills. I hung this in front of my trainer so when I road I could increase the pressure as I climbed the hills. This little trick helped pass the time, hour and a half, a bit easier and it gave me a good feel for the course.

We have the course for the Half Marathon and as we walk we know where we would be when walking at WDW. It is really fun knowing that at mile 1 we are passing Spaceship Earth and at mile 2 we will be turning on to World Drive and at mile 6 we will be at Cinderella Castle, etc. Water and food stops are worked into our training walks also. So far with DW's personal best she has made it to Richard Petty's Driving Experience and I have actually finished the half since I have already walked 17 miles for my personal best.

Keep your training FUN so the increase in miles will just add to the enjoyment of training. Too often I have read where people are straining to get out and train and this is not good.

BTW, last year I had set a goal to bicycle 200 miles in a day and by following my training can be fun mentality, I had no problem obtaining that goal on Halloween.

Good luck to all 3 of you. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

we don't have kids, but my husband and I run together and enter races together. He blows by me on races, but he runs with me when we train. It's fun to be healthy together, and hold each other accountable!

I've dated runners and while we entered races together we never really ran together. I like the solitude of running and don't really do group training runs.

I train for my half marathons with my inlaws (FIL is racing with me at DL). DH and DD are going to do the 5k, and they are going to train together. DH is a big boy and kinda slow, so it works out for him and DD who is 10 to run together. Since I am working on speed and can cover more distance, I don't run with them.

Like Firedancer, I too like solitary runs, but sometimes I find the "pressure" of running with the outlaws helpful. They do push me to run harder/farther/faster when I need to.

Good luck to you and your family-no matter how fast you go, at least you are all out there together doing it!

I love that you are able to do this! I don't have that here. DH and I will sometimes go out together on the nights we do for time. We will turn around at the same time for our out and back and by the time we get to the end, we will be able to walk in together. This is the best for me.

My DSs say I am to slow and it hurts for them to walk that slow. My eldest DS walked the half marathon with me this past Jan and my DS#2 will do the same this January. I look forward to it. I'm slow, but it's all good. I have actually grown accustomed to doing it by myself for the most part I just do one step at a time.

I still envy those of you who can do it together.

I was surprised to hear you walk the marathon. I didnt know that was an option. I thought there was a time per mile requirement. Are you still able to get a medal at the end or do you just do it for fun? My DH and I did EE5k last year but we werent in the best of shape. I used to do races over 10 years ago and am getting healthy again in hopes of getting back to the races. I miss them. My DH and I are doing the mickeys family 5k together in Oct. Our hopes is for it to be much more fun than last years race, after all we will be in better shape for it.

I would love to do a half marathon though down the road. I am so thrilled to hear that maybe walking part of it could be an option.

It depends on the race. Some have stricter limits because they don't want walkers, some have limits that are walker friendly but you have to maintain a specific speed, some have no limit but might stop recognizing the finish as "official" after a set time so you get no medal.

The January Disney races enforce a 16 minute per mile time limit and they will sweep you if you fall under that time. The clock starts when the last person crosses the start line so you can technically go a little slower and still not get swept if you started early enough in the walker corral.

I didn't see a pacing requirement for the October races but I would think they are the same.

Yup, we are a running family here. My husband doesn't really run with us since he is so fast (7-minute miles), but the kids run with me and have for the past year. They are 7, 9, and 10 and have all done the 5k distance. (And did a year ago, too, when they were ages 6 - 9.) My 10 year old is getting ready to run with Dad now, though, as he is way faster than me. He just did a mile in 7:32. I am a 10-minute miler and both of the younger ones (my girls) seem to handle that pace well.

I run intermittantly with my DD16, DH, DS22, sister and BIL. Not all at the same time but for changing it up, it's nice. My sis is great for company on the long runs and we run almost the same pace. My DD and DS push me to run faster since they are much younger and naturally faster but they don't do long runs. My DH and I have run together in the past but he's stuggling with an Achilles problem so not lately. It's hard for him to run slow with me. And my BIL is just a good person to run with, very encouraging but he also has to slow down to run with me so I feel bad and try and run faster.

On vacation we actually run together sometimes, it motivates us all to do it we go early in the mornings (last year on the beach).

I was always a solo runner and then last summer and fall, my DS 14 started to run with me. After about 2 months he was so much faster than I was that he would run 2 miles with me and then complete the run ahead of me.

Last weekend my DS8 ran a 5K with me. He had never run before, but it was a school fundraiser and he decided to run the 5K instead of the 1 mile. I didn't think he would make it, but he finished way ahead of me, just behind DS 15.

DS15, DS8 and I will all start the 5K together tomorrow at the Salt Lake Marathon!
