Sick of paying more to use a credit card.

Arrgghh!!! I am getting soooo tired of seeing places that charge more for the use of a credit card. I got gas this morning at one of my favorite stops, when I have to get gas in the mornings and after filling up I noticed the sign was five cents more a gallon for credit/debit card use. I just wonder when every single store and merchant will start this. It will be back to cash for me then.

It sucks, but the businesses lose a percentage on each CC transaction. I HATED that when DH owned his own retail business.
If it is such a bother, just pay cash.

I always use pay at the pump. I have'nt been inside a gas station to pay for gas in, well I don't know how long. I will just be more vigilant where I buy my gas. But if this does become more and more of a trend at more places, I will be going back to cash.

Just something to keep in mind - according to the agreement that each vendor agrees to who accepts Visa/Mastercard/AMEX/Discover the vendor may NOT charge a surcharge to use a credit card. They are perfectly well allowed however to offer a discounted cash price but it must be stated clearly.

For instance, I sell copiers, if I tell you that this copier is $348.00 and you hand me a Visa card I can't charge you 3% more since you are paying by Visa. I CAN however say that the price is $348.00 and the cash discounted price is $338.00

It's really just symantics but it's something that consumers should certainly be aware of, if you find someone trying to charge more for CC purchases be sure to report them to the credit card company.

Vendors are also not allowed to require a minimum purchase for credit card usage, I see signs often that say minimum $10 purchase on credit cards, makes me angry that some people play by the rules but not others

I see the both of the above happening a lot. Even with our local city government. If I pay my water bill with a card they will charge me 2 or 3% fee.

See if a company uses another vendor to process CC transactions, the vendor can charge a 2-3% for the use of it's service.

Like my electric company uses a 3rd party vendor to process CCs and charges a fee with them.

Interesting, I've never heard of a company using another company to process their credit card transactions (with the exception of paypal). I'd be very curious to see what the big 4 have to say about that but I'm not sure what if anything they could say since they don't actually have agreements with the electric company. I wonder which company actually holds the merchant account.

Our credit card processor (Point and Pay, Inc.) accepts Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover for online transactions. The credit card processor assesses a convenience fee on the total amount of the transaction. Click here to see the detailed credit card convenience fee structure.

If paying an amount between: The fee will be:
$0.01 - $50.00 ...$2.00
$50.01 - $100.00 ...$2.95
$100.01 - $200.00 ...$4.95
$200.01 - $300.00 ...$6.95
For every additional $100 up to $1000 ...Add $2.00
For every additional $1000 ...Add $25

It used to be a percentage, which was small, but now I only pay in cash at the office. And it happens to be two blocks down the road, so it's not a big deal.

:thumbsup2 When I see those signs for minimum I will report them. When they ask for ID I report them. If they offer the service they should know the do's and don't s of it.

In California they can ask for Id but not supposed to deny you if the name doesn't match. I work in retail and you wouldn't believe how many people complain when we don't ask for id. We can however compare signatures and if doesn't match the card deny it. You want people to ask for id. It's a nightmare when your identity has been stolen. Trust me it happens ALL the time. I get calls all the time when someones debit card number has been compromised and used as a Visa and they are in tears because there account was charged emptying their account. Now their rent is gone because the banks take forever to correct the issue and their checks are bouncing all over town. The retailer can't do anything for them.

I used to see this a lot at small stores around here, but many of them I've noticed no longer have these signs. I guess the stores know consumers are getting wise to these rules. I still try to use cash for small purchases at local independently-owned shops, but at big chains I will charge $1. I figure they can afford it.

I haven't seen a gas station offer a cash discount in my area, nor anywhere else for years! That is sure a blast from the past!

I noticed the overpriced gas/convenience store near me requires a $5 min for CC purchases, but since I only buy gas there on rare occasion, and that is always over $5, I don't really care.

funny, I was just asked for ID at citifield (mets) the other night. The name didn't match and she didn't say anything.

I find here on LI no one looks at the signature. In the supermarket you don't even need to sign for it if it is under 25 dollars. When we were in FL, the woman at the PUblix examined the signatures like we were criminals.

I do not sign the backs of my credit cards for this reason.

I write "CHECK FOR I.D." on the back.

Allegheny Power uses a 3rd party to process online Credit card payments. Verizon uses a 3rd party to process phone credit card payments and they both charge a fee.

If it is a Mastercard they aren't suppose to accept it, don't know if that is true on Visa because that is my debit which I don't like to use.

In my area there are 4 gas stations that are charging .5 cents or more less per gallon if one pays with cash. So I see it as a perk if you pay with cash not as a penailty if you pay with a credit card.

The gas stations that now offer a discount at the pump used to offer a cash discount if you bought a car wash from them. I much prefer the cash discount.

I like being able to get a discount for paying cash. I like earning rewards points for using my CCs. I use cash when they offer a discount and pay by CC when they don't. I don't think it is realsitic to expect to get both.

At least here in NJ, gas stations can't charge more to use a cc, but they can charge less if you pay in cash. The station closest to us charges 8 cents less than the other stations if you pay in cash - a good thing! :cool1:

Well most of the gas stations around here (AT THE MOMENT) you do not have to pay more to use a card. So for now, yes I do expect to get both. So seeing that this one in particluar did charge more, surprised me.
