Hygiene at Disney

I have just been reading a few threads on Hygiene with regard to hotel rooms. Some of the comments are quite scary and some are informative one thing I have noticed though. Nobody has picked up on the method used at the turnstiles at the entrances to the parks. I have often wondered as I put my finger on the reader at the turnstile who has just preceded me. What could they have been doing with their finger before placing it on the spot I am just about to place my finger on as instructed by the CM. The easy answer of course is to carry a small sanitizer and do a quick wipe/squirt of the device. I wonder if the CM would object?

Not sure about the CM, but those behind you will. When we were at Epcot in December this guy behind us was complaining that it took my 8 yo daughter too long to put her ticket in. DH turned around and just said excuse me, she is only 8. FWIW, she did just fine, simply had it turned the wrong way, 1 time.

When we were at Disney in November, there were hand sanitizer dispensers in each park, right past all of the turnstiles. We have always put hand sanitizer on our hands after touching the finger scans - who knows who has touched the scanner before you. It was nice on the last trip to just use Disney's sanitizer, and not have to dig mine out of my bag.

As an IT person, please do not squirt the biometrics devices with your own cleaner. Reduces the life of the device and can result in inaccurate readings.

No one will be thrilled when you nor the people behind you can get through because your now created a refraction in the reader.

I was thinking the same thing; but using Disney or your own sanitizer AFTER going through the turn style is certainly a reasonable idea!

just go and wash your hands after or use sanitizer if you are that concerned. Believe me you will be touching things all day to worry about the scanner is silly.

Yes the method you suggest is the one we apply (sanitize ones hands after using the machine) Full marks to your husband who stood up for your young daughter. It is amazing how impatient people get when in line.

Not something I worry about. I know I will not be able to keep my hands in my pockets the entire trip, LOL.

I just try very hard to keep my hands away from my face and wash them thoroughly every chance I get. If I notice a sanitizer station, I will use it, but I don't go looking for them and I do not carry sanitizer with me. Have not gotten sick from going to Disney yet.

Germs are everywhere. They are part of life and a healthy immune system can handle most of them. I try not to let the phobic make me crazy about it.

We touch 1000 things a day other people have everyday not just at WDW. Just sanitize or wash your hands frequently if it bothers you.

Just wash your hands every now and then, and don't panic. We have an immune system for a reason.

Ewwww...I know. If you think too much about it, you'd be completely grossed out by lots of things. When I was in college and worked at a bank, the dirt would just roll off my hands when I washed them from money. Much less toilet seats, water fountains, food trays, water faucets, remote controls, phones, and the list goes on and on. Personally, I don't worry about stuff I can't control. I just try to wash my hands often (like during flu season), and have a good time. I'm sure it's no different from half the things we touch at local grocery stores and at work.

When we were there at Christmas the optical finger scanners weren't being used. The CM smiled and told us we didn't have to put our finger on the optical scanner. We just inserted our pass, the green light flashed, and the CM waved us through.

I agree, you touch so many things in a course of a day. I travel alot for work, I'm sitting in a Hyatt Place in Minneapolis right now. I never sanitize the room when I check-in and never worry about it. I use hand sanitizer before I eat but that's about it.

Ha! I love Mythbusters, but sure didn't see that one. I don't ever recall my hands being any dirtier than when I handled coins (other than digging in dirt). I originally thought it was ink from the bills, but I did disprove that myth when I had to wrap coins from a vending machine owner all morning!

Anyway, not sure about the germs per se, but it's cornered the market on good old fashioned dirt!!!

The other thing I always think of is when I settle into my seat on RRC and willingly squeeze the harness into the side of my face so my head doesn't bounce around!! Yuck! But I can't help it!

Well said, I'm in the same boat! But I like the extra options for people and I know if I have a cold I try to wash and/or sanitize if possible before touching doorknobs or the dispense button on the water cooler at work to try and not spread things... (Not enough sick days to call off for every sniffle!)
