I have been running on and off for about 2 years. I got shin splints in july 09. I took a 3 1/2 months off and started back up in Nov. 09. By the first of Dec I got shin splints back. I've to a dr who sent me to a PT. I know do special stretches and try to back off at any pain. I have done all running indoors since Nov on a treadmill. I bought new shoes in Nov. The PT added an insert under my inserts the chiropractor gave me. These shoes have apx 75 miles on them all indoors untill this week. I need to get a pair of shoes for outdoor running since the weather is getting better. We had some 30-40 degree days so I couldn't help myself but get outdoors and run. I only have one good pair of running shoes (my indoor running shoes). I wore these outdoors this week but my shin splints came back. My shoe rubs wrong on my left foot. If I wear them on a treadmill no problems but outdoors terrible pain. I have been told by my PT I have a very normal foot, normal arch, normal walk, etc. I currently have Asics
GEL-Kayano® 16. Wondering what shoe I should buy for outdoor running. I try to stay under $150 due to my budget. I need to get something soon and get them broke in. I'm hoping to run a half marathon this summer.

if you have a local running shoe store where you can go to in person, I would highly recommend doing so. I finally convinced my mom who has been dealing with foot issues for a couple of years, she saw a pediatrist as well and who had special inserts made for her but she has continued to deal with the pain.

Long story short I finally got her into our local running shoe store a few weeks ago and they spent over an hour with her, she came out with a pair of Brooks and has commented to me several times over the past few weeks that she can go to the mall and walk or walk on her treadmill etc and she has not had any of the pain that she had been experiencing.

I live in a town of 13000. We have a small sports store that I never shop in. (its run down,etc..) Otherwise we have to drive apx 1 hr to a store. I did this in Nov and went to Runners Block. I was there for 45 minutes. I got lots of great info but ended up taking the shoes back b/c I couldn't handle the pain they gave me. I was really disappointed. I wonder if I need to go back and see if someone else could help me. I usually buy shoes at scheels. However I don't think their sale persons are trained much to assist in issues like this. Any one else have stores they go to? I think we have a Foot Locker and Finsh Line in Sioux Falls.

do you ice your shins? when i did PT for same each visit the therapist would work up and down my shins, pushing pretty firm to workout some of the knots, also with Biofreeze. maybe you are already doing so....

I wish I could say no so I could try something new. But I ice after each run for 15 mins or so. I also use the biofreeze as needed. I think a lot of mine is not pushing too hard. I ran sunday 3 miles and then monday 2.5 miles. I think I need to make sure I take a day off in between runs. Sometimes I just push too hard.

Do you have good socks?

I'd bring your shoes in to a running store. If the left foot rubbing area is healed when you get there, show them where it was rubbing wrong.

Your PT might also know a good shoe store.

Best of luck to you. I tried custom orthotics and they squeaked so badly when I ran I could hear them over my Ipod.

My PT put a insert (round piece) in my left shoe. I pulled it out and my shoes are wonderful! I think the insert was just bothering me too much. I did buy new shoes and new socks. I always wear the same socks when I run. Otherwise my feet pound if I wear my everyday socks (they are thinner).

The running store (had a WONDERFUL lady that helped me) she said I might want to try a custom orthotic. Are those expensive?

I don't have any great advice for you, except to hang in there. Everytime I get a new pair of shoes I get shin splints for the first week or so, but then they seem to go away. I also have trouble transitioning from indoor to outdoor or outdoor to indoor running. Again, I just have to back off and be patient because it does get better with time. Remember, you are using different muscles on the treadmill than you are outside.

I used to live in Brookings, SD and I remember being frustrated because I had to drive so far to get anything! The good news is that once you find a pair of shoes that you love, you can start ordering them online.

My mom and by husband both have Brooks Dyads 5 and they really like them. They both walk on the outside of their feet. Can't remember if that is underpronate or over. My daughter walks on the inside of her feet and has no arch and she has a pair of Nike's, though I can't remember which version they are.

I walk we will say normal my weight is evenly distributed on my feet and I have a bit of a high arch I have three pairs of Saucony Omni's. One pair is the Saucony Omni 7 and they are extremeley hard in the heel and I have a lot of heel problems in them if I try to run or walk at a good pace, they are OK for just wearing walking around a store though. My other two pair are Saucony Omni 8 and I love them.

Last weekend I tried on a pair of Saucony Pro Grid's at Dick's Sporting good store and they were horrible.

On a side note my husband has two pair of the vibriams 5 finger shoes, supposed to be like running barefoot and he really likes them. I don't think I could handle wearing them myself though. Basically it is like a pair of gloves for your feet, each toe has it's own little place.
