Hey all,
I need some advice on how DVC renting works out, it seems like an economical choice but rather confusing.

The Situation:
I fell in love with a beautiful girl who grew up around disney, I didnt... Last march her family took me down on a trip with them and I took that opportunity to propose. Needless to say I was hooked by just about everything awsome that is disney. Anyways we are getting married in (dates removed) and want very badly to take our honeymoon in disney.

The Problem:
We have absolutly no money, neither of our families have money. At the moment I am a Senior Civil Engineering Student Graduating in may. Any money we earn from our measly jobs goes towards living expences and if we have anything left over it goes towards the wedding. So at the moment... No money to book a honeymoon and its past the point where we should have it planned.

The Solution:
DVC?????
Somewhere I have a price point of 3K for our honeymoon budget. We would like to do a (vacation specifics removed) vacation from (dates removed). If we could rent points for around $9 I think it would be doable. Where we get the money is the question.

My questions:
Has anybody heard of paying part of the rental down and then making payments after the travel dates??? I have a job lined up once I graduate in may and will be making more than enough to afford this but the key problem is that it is in May.

Is there even a chance of getting a ** at this time this late into the game?

Is it even worth trying to rent DVC points or is it a major hassle?

Does anybody have any other ideas for saving money, perhaps with dining and such?

Please help me make my fiances dreams come true again!!!

Thank You Everybody!

Edit: Travel specifics have been removed from this post, so as not to be a Reservation Wanted post. Chuck S

It is extremely unlikely that you would find a DVC owner willing to accept payments after the vacation is taken. There would be no easy recourse, no way to salvage the point if you didn't pay for some reason. Owners likely would not accept that risk.

You could always delay the honeymoon trip until you are in a better financial position. Many couples do.

I wish you lots of pixie dust in getting this arranged and congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I don't think you'll find too many (if any) that will let you pay for the points after the vacation. It's just too risky for the owner, the renter could just disappear, and the owner is out the points and the $. Not that you want to go into debt, but you could take a personal loan for the honeymoon and pay it off after.
From what I've read, renting isn't too difficult.
Your best bets for a studio would be the larger resorts, OKW or SSR, possibly AKV.
As for savings $, use Magical express (no car rental costs), set up 1 or 2 special dinners out, and use the small kitchen in the studio for other meals. You don't need to spend each day at the parks, visit the other resorts, enjoy the resort you're staying at, and it being your honeymoon, I'm sure you'll have a good time.
Best of luck!

This is what we did. We took a weekend to New Orleans, but then we took another trip later.

We didn't take our honeymoon until 4 YEARS after the wedding. And wouldn't you know it - I got pregnant on our honeymoon!

We bascially had two "mini-moons": one weekend to NOLA and one weekend to ATL. We've never taken ananniversary trip or anything because our kids are still too young.

Good Luck to you, I hope you figure out a way to make you're dreams come true!:love::love: Enjoy you're new Marriage!

We took our honeymoon four months after our wedding. We both went back to work on the Monday after the wedding. I even worked on Friday before the wedding.

Wait until you can afford a honeymoon. Take a short break at a local hotel, get room service and save your money for a later date.

By the way, if your fiance doesn't like that, change your mind about getting married. Marriage is all about compromising and working together to resolve problems.

We took part of a week off work and had our honeymoon several months later when we made it part of a "business" trip. The marriage is what's important, and you don't want to start your life together in debt.

I would just wait.

This is not the same thing, but the reason is in the story. :) We had a week between wedding and honeymoon cruise. The cruise was great, don't get me wrong, but we actually felt it was VERY romantic to just be together with no work, we turned in our marriage license to the registrar's office (married by a ULC minister out of state, and he had to get back to wife and family so he was glad we wanted to drop it off) and leave with two notarized copies of the actual certificate (which in OR is just the license with more signatures, LOL). Opening joint accounts, just wandering around being newly married.

So not going on a honeymoon could be like that.

My brother and his wife got married in the same month that he was graduated from college (she'd graduated the year before) and the month he was commissioned...they had no honeymoon. Instead, she oversaw their move to a new state while he went off for a month of training in Biloxi or some hot place like that.

For *years* after that, they called any and every trip their honeymoon, and got lots of congratulations. Actually, specifically, they would reply with "well we never took a honeymoon" when asked by hotel staff "so are you celebrating anything while staying with us?" (or however they would put it), and it was assumed that it was a honeymoon. They had great fun taking a ton of minihoneymoons! :goodvibes

So just wait. Get your job, save up, etc etc, and have the big deal vacay then.

Even with a free room Disney is expensive. I'd agree with waiting and saving in the interim. However, there are ways to save money on any given trip if necessary. One can often stay off property for a song, there are lots of things to do without going to the parks, one can eat in (esp with DVC), flights to Orlando can often be at good prices and rental cars are fairly cheap in Orlando if needed.

If you choose to wait a bit before taking your honeymoon, it might actually be fun to let her help plan the trip to WDW. You could tell her you'd like to take her to a DVC resort, and then have tons of fun pouring over the choices and deciding which one you'd like to stay at and when. It would also give you more time to really research the ins and outs of renting points. (I'm assuming you've already read the sticky with all the details, but if you have other random questions feel free to PM me. Prior to purchasing DVC ourselves we rented points, and have since rented out some of our own points. So I've been on both sides of the transaction.) You might not be aware that even with DVC points, there are times of the year where the room will cost you almost half the points as other times. Being newly married with no kids will allow you to travel whenever the heck you want!!! Low season rocks! And besides, half the fun of a Disney trip is the planning and anticipation!!!

Good luck with your decision and the planning. I hope you get everything you want!

So you expect to find a total stranger to subsidize your honeymoon with an under market rate price on points and to allow you to pay after you come back from your honeymoon and begin your job? Think about that.

I want a Range Rover but will have two kids in college next year. The Range Rover will wait. How about you?

Best of luck to you and your fiance.

We also took our honeymoon quite a while after we were married. And our wedding was frugal - I baked my own wedding cake. And we were long out of college, but still just broke.

Read what HBC said, its harsh, but its true. You are asking a stranger to take a lot of risk. Even if you have the best intentions for paying the owner, stuff happens - you may have a tougher time finding a job. You may find the expenses of setting up a house far exceed your expectations. Paying back an owner may become a lower priority - or even impossible to do in a timely manner.

Wishing you much happiness in your marriage.

If you have a $3K budget for your honeymoon, I think that you can do a WDW trip for less than that.

Granted, it may not be for the length of time or place you want, but very doable.

Even a GF trip is not out of the question if you do a shorter trip vs. a longer one. And, given all the discounts out there, I am sure you can be creative and do it up right for your fiance!

As far as DVC, unfortunately, I can't see anyone willing to do this any more than Disney would.

But, congratulations and good luck!!!

My wife and I had a "low budget honeymoon"... We are from Iowa... so our first night (which was a gift) was spent at a bed and breakfast in Galena on the Mississippi. then we had a flight out of O'hare (which were a gift) to Rhode Island... we spent 5 days in Connecticut, RI and Mass... a day in cape code and a game at Fenway! We had zero rooms reserved, in fact one night was spent at a hotel in Connecticut that was being renovated for like $29 a night (found out in the morning it didnt have hot water)...

Many times its the journy and adventure and not the destination that is actually what you truly treasure! Your Honeymoon would be special as long as you and your wife are together!

One thing about DVC rentals that the OP might not understand.....most owners who rent do it because they need the money. They can't take a vacation and need to rent out the points to cover their loan payments or maintenance fees. They want to take some other vacation, and rent points to get the money to pay for it.

That's why it's not likely that you'd find someone to a) rent you points at a deep discount, or b) be willing to put off payment, potentially for a long period of time. The owner needs the money for something else.

I think it's lovely that you want to give your bride a wonderful honeymoon. But I'm sure she'd agree, what matters is who you're with, not where you're staying. Check out mousesavers.com, and the Budget Board here on the DIS. You might be able to put together a trip within your budget if you stay offsite, or even at one of the values with a discount code.

I know where you are coming from, DH graduated with a degree in civil engineering in May 2008. It was very frustrating during his college years not being able to go to WDW as much as we wanted. Is it possible you will receive money at your wedding as a gift? Then after your wedding you could book and pay for your honeymoon. DH and I used our wedding money to pay for our food and travel expenses, in-laws paid for our room and tickets as a wedding gift.

:) DH and I married in 1994. He was at the fire academy in training and only had the weekend off. We spent our wedding night about 40 miles from home in a lovely hotel and then he was back at the academy that next afternoon. So he kept his promise...I had never been to WDW....he took me for our 8th anniversary in 2002...and I was hooked ...we have been there every year since and bought into DVC last year. Just becasue it doesn't happen right after the wedding doesn't mean it won't happen. Have a romantic weekend and then save your money for the "honeymoon".

When he and I married our eyes were bigger than our budget and now 15 years later we can look back and realize that.

Congratulations and Best Wishes. Being married is like a spend the night party with your best friend and they don't have to go home.

Truth be told most people cant do a honeymoon. My DH and i stayed in the hotel were the reception was held 1 night(gift from ML) then we were counting our gift money to tip and pay off other things we still had after the wedding.
I hope all go's well injoy the big day thats what counts plus you'll be very tired by the end you will just want to sleep.
Good Luck:flower3:
