Disney Dining Review - February 2010

Pre Trip Info:

My husband Paul and I (Noreen) spent 12 days at Disney World in February 2010.

We live in Northern NJ and love going to Disney World.

We have annual passes to Disney World. We also bought annual passes to Universal.

We stayed at Pop Century due to the phenomenal annual pass rates.

We have the Tables in Wonderland (TIW) card and chose not to purchase the Disney Dining plan fearing it would be too much food.

In additional to dining at Disney, we also ate a few meals offsite and I will include those in this review.

We had a rental car which made it easy for us to get around.

We also participated in a fridge swap at Pop Century so had a refrigerator in our room.

ADRs:
Disney changed the number of days in advance of your trip that you can book your dining. It used to be 90 days and changed to 180 days on October 27, 2009. Since this trip fell within 180 days from October 27, 2009 I was supposed to be able to go online to book my dining on 10/27/09

On 10/27/09 I tried getting online to book my dining around 7:30 in the morning. The system was down and it advised calling instead. I started calling and kept getting an “All circuits are busy.” I kept trying and around 9am finally got put on hold with music. That lasted about 20 minutes and I was connected to Bonnie who was so sweet and helpful despite probably having to deal with irate customers who spent a long time on hold before getting through. I was extra nice to her knowing she was probably having a rough day, but she was sweet as can be. I made the following reservations knowing that I may cancel some of them.

Dining Reviews:

I will start the actual reviews in a separate post and will try to upload the pictures. I haven't done a dining review in a while or uploaded pictures so bear with me while I get the hang of it again. I know I won't be able to compete with some of the great reviews/photos by the veteran dining reviewers but I'll do my best...

Bagel Sandwiches:
We stopped at a bagel store on the way to the airport to pick up sandwiches and chips to take on the plane. I forgot to take pictures of this meal but it was basic bagel sandwiches. Turkey with Meunster for me and Roast Beef with American Cheese for Paul. I get much better at remembering the pictures once we get to Disney.

Dinner at Jiko:
We drove over to Animal Kingdom Lodge. We valet parked then headed in to the restaurant. We were given a pager which went off within a few minutes.

The woman who seated us was very nice and acknowledged that we are celebrating our anniversary on this trip. She gave us each anniversary pins that said 12 years on them. They also gave us a card congratulating us on our Anniversary signed by the staff at Jiko.




They brought out our bread and beverages. I had sprite and Paul stuck with water. The bread came with an interesting spread. I’m not sure what it was but it was sort of sweet. Whatever it was, we enjoyed it.



We were adventurous and shared the Ostrich appetizer. It was served sliced over a bed of a type of barley. The barley stuff I liked. The ostrich was a little rare for me so I ate a little of the edges. Paul ate the rest and enjoyed it.



For our entrees, I had the Filet Mignon and Paul had the Short Ribs. The Filet Mignon is served over Macaroni and Cheese. Sounds like an odd combination, but it’s not like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese from the blue box. This dish was very good. The portion size is perfect – not too much that you are stuffed but enough that you are full. The short ribs were served with roasted Yukon gold potatoes. Paul gave me a piece of his short ribs to try and they were delicious. As good as my filet was, his short ribs were better. I ended up giving him some of the filet and he gave me some of his short ribs. He had to take it off the bone and it basically fell off the bone with the fork.





For dessert, I was planning to try the Meyer Lemon dessert, but it wasn’t on the menu anymore. They had a Seasonal dessert that was Lemon White chocolate mousse with blueberry coulis and some sort of ice cream (maybe lavender). We ordered one of those to share. When they brought us our dessert, they also brought us a free mini pistachio crème brulee for our anniversary. Both desserts were delicious.





We enjoyed our meal at Jiko and it was a great start to our trip

Breakfast:
For breakfast we ate oranges that we bought in Publix and Honey Nut Cheerio bars. Sorry, no pictures of these.

We stopped at the food court and bought resort refillable mugs. I even took a picture of one of them



Snack at Sunshine Seasons in Epcot:
Mid morning Paul was getting a little hungry so bought a packet of grapes at the Sunshine Seasons area of the Land pavilion to hold him over. I thought I took a picture of this but can't find it

Lunch at Le Cellier in Epcot:
We checked in a bit early for our reservation at Le Cellier. We were seated quickly and the restaurant had plenty of empty tables.

I ordered the prix fix lunch which included from a set menu an appetizer, entrée and dessert. I ordered the spicy chicken and chipotle sausage appetizer, the gnocchi entrée, and the maple crème brulee for dessert. Paul ordered the shaved prime rib sandwich with French fries.

Our waitress brought out our drinks (Sprite for me and Coke for Paul) and breadsticks.



We shared the appetizer. I know almost everyone goes with the cheddar cheese soup. We wanted to be adventurous and try something different . It was a bit spicy but it was served over a sweet onion type of stuff that was really good on the breadsticks. Paul said if I put some of that on the sausage it would cut down the spiciness. I did and it was great.



The gnocchi was very good too.



Paul’s sandwich was good with French fries that were perfectly crunchy outside.



When we were done the waitress asked if I was ready for my crème brulee so I said yes. A little while later she brought out a chocolate mousse on a plate that said Happy Anniversary. I thought it was a nice free dessert from Le Cellier (similar to what Jiko did last night) and was surprised my crème brulee didn’t come out at the same time.



Paul asked about the crème brulee and the waitress was confused and thought I wanted mousse. She ended up bringing me the crème brulee too. The mousse was cute and looked like a mousse but I’m not a fan of chocolate mousse, pudding, or most other chocolate desserts.



We enjoyed Le Cellier very much.

Dinner at Pop Century Food Court:
As dinner time was approaching we were still pretty full from our big lunch so we decided not to go to the Wave after all. We went back to Pop, went to the Food Court and shared the Beef with Broccoli, a side order of string beans, and a tie dyed cheesecake for dinner.








We brought our refillable mugs with us to have soda with dinner. This was perfect, not too much, and our total with TIW discount was $11.91. That is a bargain Dinner at Disney. And the food was very tasty as well.

That refillable mug looks a little different from the ones we saw in March '09. It looks more like a cup not the mugs that are little at the bottom to fit in a cup holder. Am I right or am I looking at the picture wrong? I would like one that looks more like a regular cup!

Breakfast - Yogurt Parfait from Beach Club Marketplace:
We originally planned to have breakfast at the food court, but Paul ate a donut and some cheese doodles and we have lunch reservations at 1. I wanted to have the custom made fruit and yogurt parfait that they have at the Beach Club. We drove over and Paul dropped me off and I ran in to get it. I like that it’s made for you right there. I had it with everything which included strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and granola. It was just under $5 – a perfect and healthy breakfast. Sorry the picture isn't the best; I carried it back to the car and tried balancing it in the car to take the picture.



Lunch at Flame Tree BBQ at Animal Kingdom:
We looked at the menu at Yak & Yeti to see what we were thinking of having for lunch later. We were a little worried that if we had a big lunch we wouldn’t be hungry for dinner like yesterday. Maybe having both lunch and dinner at a sit down restaurant is too much for us.

We decided not to go to Yak & Yeti for lunch after all. We went over to Flame Tree BBQ. We ordered the ribs, the pork sandwich, and an order of fries. With the TIW discount it came to just under $20. Paul picked up bottles of coke at a shop across the way from Flame Tree as we prefer bottled over fountain soda. Flame Tree BBQ doesn’t allow you to substitute French fries for the sides they want to give you with the dishes (either cole slaw, beans, or grapes) so I ordered fries since I was in the mood for them. Good thing I did as I wasn’t crazy about either the sandwich or the ribs so basically ate the fries.

Snack - Ice Cream Sandwich:
We stopped at the Ice Cream Stand near Restaurantosaurus and got an ice cream cookie sandwich to share for $4.37. I like that they make it for you – you choose either chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookies and they scoop vanilla ice cream into the middle to make the ice cream sandwich. We got chocolate chip. We sat inside Restaurantosaurus as it was about to rain.



Dinner at Kouzzina:
We valet parked the car at the Boardwalk and went to check in at about 8:45pm.

Kouzzina was running very behind. We waited until 9:45 before we were seated. I read good things about the Sangria so wanted to try it. The waitress suggested we get a pitcher so we did. It was actually pretty tasty. We didn’t finish our pitcher.



We were given bread with butter that was topped with black sea salt. We must have been hungry since we gobbled up the bread. We shared the fried calamari appetizer. It was served with two dipping sauces – one was a creamy garlic sauce and the other was kind of like a remoulade. The presentation was very cute and those round things are fried lemons on top. We did not eat the fried lemons.



Paul ordered the lamb shank.



I ordered the pastizio.



Our food was very good. But we were stuffed and couldn’t finish. We packed up our leftovers and skipped dessert. Since we have the fridge in the room we can put the food there. The food court at Pop Century has a microwave so we will be able to heat it up when we are ready to. Other than the long wait that they didn’t handle that well as they didn’t let people know they were delayed we both enjoyed Kouzzina.

I don't know how to include someone's question in my post to answer it, but you are correct, this cup is shaped more like a regular cup. It doesn't have the more narrow bottom piece. However, it still fits in the cup holder in the car.

Thanks! I was planning to skip the mug this trip since I can't have caffeine or carbonated beverages right now but I think I will go ahead and get one.

I did not know this was there. My DD loves to order ice cream sandwiches on real cookies that they make for you. She would love this! So it's over near Restaurantosaurus? I guess I never realized there was an ice cream shop over there. Is it just in that general area?

Breakfast at Pop Century Food Court:
We had breakfast at the Pop Century Food court. It was pretty crowded.

I had a Pop waffle with strawberries and whipped cream.



Paul had a plain croissant and a chocolate croissant. He could not make up his mind which one he wanted. He also had an orange he brought from our room.





We are getting our money’s worth with the refillable mugs. I had orange soda and Paul had tea.

Lunch at Peco Bill’s Café in the Magic Kingdom:
We went to Peco Bill’s Café for lunch around 2pm. We shared the Deluxe Cheeseburger Platter and also bought bottled coke in the shop next door.

I forgot to take pictures of this meal.

Peco Bills has a great toppings bar. They had sautéed mushrooms and onions. They also had cheese sauce to dip your fries in. We enjoyed our lunch. We both like to snack and try different things but find that sharing a counter service meal is enough to fill us up without feeling like we’re about to burst.

Dinner at Cape May Café at the Beach Club:
We drove to the Beach Club, valet parked and headed in. We checked in around 7:35 and were given a pager. So we wandered around the resort a bit. Our pager lit up around 7:50 and they greeted us with Happy Anniversary Buttons. There is a little room off to the side of the entrance that used to be a bar and they walked us in there to sit. Paul asked if there were any tables available in the regular section of the restaurant. The greeter said we would need to wait a bit longer and we were fine with that. So we were given another pager and went back to the lobby to wait. As we were sitting there, we noticed that there were plenty of empty tables. Maybe they were short on servers.

By around 8:05 we were paged again and brought to a normal table in the actual restaurant. I’m glad Paul said something because I would not have been happy in that little side room.

Our waitress came over and took our drink order – Sprite for me and Iced Tea for Paul.

We started off with a bucket of clams and mussels and a plate of crab legs and a few fried shrimp. We enjoyed the seafood start to our meal.







Next we each had a plate of the non seafood items such as ribs, chicken, pasta, sliced meat, etc. I only have a picture of one of those plates.



Neither of us were thrilled with the regular food. The sliced meat was very dry and the ribs just not that good. The chicken was OK. The seafood is why we wanted to come here so we were happy to instead eat a few more crab legs.

The dessert buffet is nice as it contains mini versions of different desserts so you can try a few. We got a little dish with a variety to share.



The Oreo Bon Bon was pretty good and I avoided it in the past.

The standout for me was the flan. The flan is one of the dishes that isn’t individual but in a big pan you serve yourself from. True flan connoisseurs probably would not like this version as it was much thicker than any other flan I’ve tried, but that was what I liked about it.



They also had apple crisp in a big serving bowl. This was OK but smelled better than it tasted. It smelled like Mickey’s Philharmagic when they pump that apple cinnamon scent into the audience. I forgot to take a picture of the apple crisp.

We really enjoyed our meal at Cape May Cafe.

Breakfast at Kona Café at the Polynesian:
Paul and I had a late breakfast at Kona Café. We got there about 10:30am and it was packed. We waited a while before we were seated.

Paul wasn’t really hungry since he still isn’t feeling great but he knew I was looking forward to this breakfast so we went.

I had the Pineapple Macadamia Pancakes with bacon and a sprite.

Paul had a toasted bagel, a side order of sausage, and coffee.

Unfortunately, I cannot find those pictures. I'm pretty sure I took them, but I'm not sure what we did with them.

I really enjoyed my pancakes. Breakfast here is a must do for me each trip. Paul isn't as excited about breakfast here, but knows I really enjoy it so doesn't mind it.

Dinner at the Food Court in the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa:
We had dinner in the food court at the casino.

I had the fish sandwich with fries and soda.



Paul had a meatball sub and soda.



For food court food in a casino, it was pretty good.

Snack at Magic Kingdom:
During the evening Extra Magic Hours Paul wanted a snack so got a sweet cream cheese filled pretzel in TomorrowLand. This was very tasty and reminded me of having cheesecake inside a pretzel. We stopped to get a bottle of Coke and Paul also got some popcorn.

Breakfast at Pop Century Food Court:
Paul wasn’t hungry since he ate two oranges and a cheerio bar already so he just picked at bit at my breakfast. I got the kids Mickey Waffles with bacon. It came with applesauce (I gave that to Paul) and orange juice. This was the bargain meal of the week - $3.74 after TIW discount. It was very good too.






Lunch at Universal Food Court:
We went into the International Food court and we ordered sweet and sour chicken which came with fried rice and vegetables. We also got an egg roll and soda. We shared. We didn’t want to stuff ourselves where we were too full for dinner.



I didn’t realize this until later, but we could have saved 10% with our annual pass. Good to know for next time.

Dinner at Bubba Gump at Universal City Walk:
We checked in at Bubba Gump just after 6:15pm.

We were seated pretty quickly. I had Sprite – they carry Pepsi products so it was actually Sierra Mist instead. Paul had Mountain Dew.

I had Shrimpers Heaven which included various types of shrimp – coconut shrimp, tempura shrimp, fried shrimp and cold shrimp like from a shrimp cocktail. It came with French fries.



Paul had the shrimp Po-Boy sandwich that also came with fries.



For dessert we shared the 6 Minis. What a cute idea. You can buy them individually or buy all six. We got all six to share. The presentation is cute in a little shot glass holder. The different varieties were Peanut Butter and Chocolate, Red White and Blue, Lemon with fruit, Chocolate MudPie, Chocolate Raspberry, and Creamsicle. We enjoyed these.



We received a 10% discount for having a Universal Annual Pass. All of the food was very good too. The waiters/waitresses have a cute system where you have a thing on your table that you flip to either say "Run Forrest Run" if you don't need anything or "Stop Forrest" if you do. I don't think those were the exact words on the little sign but it was along those lines. If you had yours on the Stop side, it seemed like whatever waitress/waiter was passing would stop to help you.

Breakfast at Dennys:
Paul saw on the news that Denny’s was doing free Grand Slam Breakfasts today. It was some sort of promotion that they started last year after the Super Bowl. I was worried that it would be packed. We drove past one Denny’s that had a line out the door, but we kept going and found another one a little off the beaten path on International Drive. We were seated immediately. The waitress asked if we wanted Grand Slams which we did and took our beverage order – Sprite for me and Coffee for Paul. The tables were turning over very quickly with everyone having the free grand slams. The only variety is how people want their eggs and what they want to drink. Since all we had to pay for was our beverages, we made sure to leave a nice tip. The food was very good and the service was good as well.





Snack at Epcot
We stopped in the bakery in Norway and got a rice cream and school bread. We enjoyed our snack and after our big breakfast did not need a full lunch.






Dinner at T Rex:
We drove over to Pleasure Island and checked in at TRex a few minutes after our 9pm ADR. We were seated almost immediately by the aquarium. We shared the Appetizer sampler with added ribs. We both had soda. This was the perfect amount of food. We were both full but not overly stuffed.

Yes, the Ice Cream stand was very close to Restaurantosaurus. It had it's own little outside seating area, but with the weather we had, we just walked back into Restaurantosaurus to eat it.

I think they also make "to order" ice cream sandwiches at the Main Street Bakery in the Magic Kingdom

Breakfast at Starring Rolls at Hollywood Studios:
We had a quick breakfast at Starring Rolls. We shared a croissant and a cherry danish. Paul had coffee and I drank water. We sat at a table in their little courtyard to eat.





Lunch at Steak & Shake:
We originally had lunch reservations at Biergarten so were going to head to Epcot but Paul said he was getting tired of Disney food and wanted to get something different.

We drove around to see what we found to eat. We stumbled upon a Steak and Shake. It looked cute and had basic food so we decided to give it a try.

Paul had a Chipotle Burger with fries.



I had a Wisconson Butter Burger with fries.



We both had soda. The food was surprisingly good. The waiter was very nice and attentive bringing Paul a new Coke just as he was finishing the first one.

We even got a Mint Cookie Bits Shake to go when we were done. After 2pm all beverages/shakes are ½ off. The waiter suggested it to us and even said we could get it to go.






Krispy Crème:
We drove by a Krispy Crème and Paul wanted to get one. Instead of getting one, we ended up buying a dozen assorted types. We’ll have them to snack on for a while now.


Dinner at Carrabas:
We headed out to dinner at Carrabas around 8:15. We have driven by it a few times and know that it is part of the same chain that Outback Steakhouse belongs to. We checked their menu online and it looks pretty good.

We were seated immediately and our waiter came by to take our beverage order – Sprite for me and Coke for Paul. He also left us bread and olive oil for dipping.


We looked through the menu as well as the specials menu. We both chose entrees from the specials menu. We appreciated that the waiter talked us out of ordering an appetizer as he said the portions are very big and they come with salad. We both started with Caesar Salad.



I ordered the pasta Rambo special which came with mushrooms, spinach, and crabmeat over homemade linguine. The menu offered s substitution of lobster for crab for an additional $2 so I did that.



Paul ordered the special that included steak as well as grilled shrimp and scallops. His came with either asparagus, mashed potatoes, or fettucine alfredo so he got the fettucine.



Everything was very good. We really enjoyed it. Our waiter was very attentive and kept bringing Paul more to drink as he’s like a bottomless pit when it comes to liquids sometimes.

I couldn’t finish my dish so had it wrapped to go. We can heat it up in the microwave in the food court.

We were being nosy and watching the people in the booth directly across from us. There were two young couples. It looked like one couple was a regular couple and the others looked like they were being set up. However, the guy was really weird – he didn’t order anything. He ate bread and drank water. He kept asking for more bread. When they got their bill, the couple got a bill, the girl with the weird guy got a bill and the guy eating bread didn’t. How weird. We were very amused by them.

We ordered dessert from the special menu – Limoncello bread pudding. The waiter explained that it is made by hand to order so would take about 20 minutes. It ended up taking more like 35 minutes but it was very good.



Our meals were very good today.

Bagels for Breakfast:
We headed to the food court for a late breakfast around 11:20 and brought two of the bagels from the Thomas’ bag we bought yesterday at Publix. I wrapped them in napkins to carry them. We toasted them in the food court and Paul bought a side of bacon and some cream cheese to go on the bagels. I know it sounds like a weird combination and the first time I heard of it, I thought it sounded disgusting too, but give it a try. A nice toasted bagel (or fresh is even better) with cream cheese and crispy bacon. It gives you that kind of creamy sweet and crispy salty combination.



Snack - Churro at Islands of Adventure:
Around 3pm we realized we haven’t had lunch or anything to eat since our late breakfast. We decided to just have a little snack and have an early dinner. So we shared a Churro from a nearby cart.

Dinner at O’Hana:
We had a late reservation at O’Hana for 9:30 but wanted to go early and see if it’s possible to get in earlier. We arrived at the Polynesian about 5:45 and explained our situation to the hostess that we skipped lunch, were hungry, and were hoping to be able to get in earlier than our reservation. She said that wouldn’t be a problem and she would get us in as soon as possible. I mentioned again that I didn’t want to eat at 9:30 but much earlier and she said that’s not a problem. We were given a pager. There were some people waiting but it wasn’t jam packed yet.

So we waited. We walked around the resort. And we waited some more. After about an hour Paul suggested I check in at the podium again just to see how much longer they thought it would be. I went back to the same woman from earlier and asked if she could check. Her response was that my reservation was at 9:30 and they are running about 15 minutes behind schedule. I reminded her that we spoke an hour ago and I was hoping to eat earlier and she said that wouldn’t be a problem. She checked with someone else who came by and said that they are running behind and that they also prefer to sit larger parties than small. So now we’re getting annoyed (not that we took it out on either of these woman) but we calmly explained that we understand that our reservation is later and if we couldn’t be accommodated early, that’s what we should have been told an hour ago when we first checked in because then we could have decided either we would wait that long or we would go elsewhere. We stayed because we were told it’s not a problem. She asked if we wanted to speak to a manager who probably wouldn’t be able to do anything anyway. We said yes, please send the manager over. At this point we’re getting more annoyed since this second woman basically said since we’re a party of two we don’t matter.

Here is where Disney Magic takes over. The manager, Angela, came over already with a solution. She introduced herself and told us that she understands the basics of the situation,, she also explained that the Luau was cancelled due to the weather and they had to accommodate those customers, and we would be the next party seated. We thanked her and chatted some more, again reiterating that we understand that our reservation is later, we’re early, etc; our concern was that we were told one thing an hour ago and now the story changed. She was gracious, helpful, and professional. It was a pleasure to deal with her. I was very impressed.

Next thing you know the second woman now comes over and says she would seat us now. Her tune suddenly changed and she’s all sweet and nice like we’re so important. She tells us about the food and picks up our pineapple bread on the way to our table.



We were seated at a nice table along the window. This woman is chatting with us now. I told her that I was very happy with the way Angela handled the situation and if they have comment cards to fill out since I would like to acknowledge her. So this woman comes back with Angela’s business card, writes her name on the back too, and gives me the comment card to fill out.

Our table was set for three and was the long way along the window. We seemed so far away from each other with the table like this. Our waiter Roy came by to take our beverage order – Sprite for me and Pink Lemonade for Paul. Paul spun the table the other way which was much better. When the waiter came back he commented that we were rearranging, but he liked it our way better too.

Our dipping sauces were brought out. They are arranged to look like a hidden Mickey.



Our salad came out, then the dumplings and chicken wings followed quickly after.





Noodles and vegetables came out quickly too.



Next thing the waiter came by with the skewers of turkey and pork. They are really moving quickly. Last time we were here we waited a long time before the skewers starting coming. Next came steak on the skewer and then shrimp. The noodles were very good with a little of the peanut sauce on them. We asked for some more noodles and some more shrimp.

Wishes was at 8 and we watched that from our table. Next dessert was brought over – bread pudding with ice cream and banana caramel sauce on the side. This was very good too.



We put the table back to the way it was when we arrived before we left. After a rough start, we had a great meal at O'Hana.

Pretzels from Goofy’s Candy Company:
We stopped in Goofy’s candy company to get chocolate dipped pretzel rods. We got them all dipped in milk chocolate and drizzled with dark chocolate. All three had different toppings – one with mini white and dark chocolate chips, one with crushed oreos, and one with crushed butterfingers.
