I would actually reconsider the 'preferred' booking, unless that's all that was available. Pop is relatively compact, and most DSAs are along the walkway around the resort. PERFECT location would be "Building 5 facing the lake. There are (at least) two convenient DSAs.

This is our 1st time at Pop, sorry to be dumb here - what is Building 5? Which decade is that? Thanks!

60s, to the left of the Hippy Dippy pool when you're standing with your back to Classic Hall. There may be other buildings with multiple walkway DSAs, but I'm sure about this one :)

if you reconsider "preferred", as Katy suggested. we also like the 50s building near by the lake (maybe it's bldg. 3?, or C?) because you have the option on 2 DSAs, the one in the courtyard of the 50s I spole of, and the one along the lake. nebo and I counted steps from our room, and they were the exact same distance! we liked the one by the lake, cause we could feed the ducks.
another reason to forgo the "preferred"... it usedto be the 60s. now it can be one end of 50s or 70s. if you are on gound or 2nd floor, great. (I always consider one flight of stairs no biggie). but 3rd or 4th floor, you still have to walk backto the elevators in the center of the bldg. so you are technically no closer to the food court, bus stops, than many standard rooms on the same floor!

Hello!
We are SO new to this whole DW-World!

We (2 adults, 4 yr old dd, 1/2 yr old dd, 2 month old dd) and my parents are traveling to DW in October for the very FIRST time, ever! We are all very excited but have no clue what we are doing. lol

My parents smoke..so I assumed I would just get them a good old smoking room and be done with it - I had NO idea that there were no smoking rooms anymore. Oh my goodness. Im flippin out because im affrraid my parents are going to flip out! ha

Not sure where we should stay now...

Dont know if its better for us to stay at value resort - 2 seperate rooms, or maybe check into a villa!?! Any suggestions? Hopefully my parents will still go despite this non-smoking business..yikes. (u dont know my parents lol)

Im assuming that there is NO smoking at the actual parks? Is that right??? Please tell me im wrong...

Thanks in advance!:thumbsup2

turner, yes, there is smoking in the parks. check out the maps with the DSAs listed, and print them out ahead of time for your parents. the DSAs are also listed on the park maps you get at the front gates.

hubby and I both smoke, but he smokes a LOT. we never stay off site. when they instituted the no smoking rooms, I wondered if he would change his tune... NO WAY! he loves staying onsite so much, we just deal with it.

the deluxe resorts are the most difficult for smokers. you have to leave your room, walk down a long hallway, to the elevator, walk to the outside, etc etc.
\
now the moderate and value resorts are much more smoker friendly. if you request a ground floor, close to a DSA, you should be good. then, at checkin, ask again to see that room on the map and the DSAS. you don't have to take the first room they offer you. we often say,
"what else have you got?"

carribean beach has DSAs just about by every building. and most of the tables by the pool bar are smoking.
Port orleans, riverside has dsas at every quiet pool, one by the main pool, and others throughout.
pop century has them all along the lake. don't stay in the 70s, there is none there.
you could rent a villa or 2 studios at saaratoga springs or key west, orrent points (it's a DVC). they are smoker freindly, a dsa outside every building. (rumour has it people have been known to smoke on the balconies.)

the cabins at fort wilderness. I have never stayed there, but you can smoke on the decks of your cabin.

If you have all the maps printed out for them, with the dsas, they should feel better about it. good luck!!
there are maps of the resorts, too, with the DSAs.

We're staying CL at BC for the last part of our trip. Are the DSA's close by? I understand I'll have to go downstairs and such - but are they easy to get to like they are at BWI?

For example, at CL at BWI I could walk down the stairs that were right next to the Concierge desk outside the CL doors and the DSA was in the courtyard. Easy peasy! It was an easy in - easy out. Is there a DSA close by the CL section at BC that's like that? You know, stairs that I could go down that come out near a DSA, or do I have to trek to get to one?

TIA!
Karen

Wait - does this mean smoking is allowed on balconies? Or is it sort of one of those things where they turn a blind eye to it?

DH and I smoke and while I'm happy to walk myself down to one of the DSAs, I can almost guarantee that he won't (he's not all that thrilled that I'm shanghai-ing the family off to WDW but that's a different story altogether). We're going to try to trade into DVC from my HGVC timeshare but I don't want to open the door to trouble if he refuses to walk to a DSA. I also want to be courteous to my fellow guests (those staying nearby and the next group to use our villa).

Any insight warmly welcomed, TIA!

The balcony information is incorrect. SSR seems very smoker friendly and you have the locations correct. AKL not so much as there is only 2 locations. Between the main entrance and the bus stop and the other is near the playground

jjohnson and shellybaxter are right - the earlier (previous page, top) information about balcony smoking is WRONG. The room rental contract you sign states this clearly, on the back - no smoking in rooms or on balconies, and that the Guest is agreeing to pay a fee of up to $550 per incident for violating the agreement.

There is a DSA in front of EVERY building at SSR and OKW. If you really think he's going to be difficult, (a) ask for a unit near the designated smoking area and (b) be SURE to point out the no-smoking agreement he/you sign to him.

Nah, just ask for a copy of the room agreement and an elastic band... and wrap them around his cigarettes, with the no-smoking clause and penalty visible and highlighted :lmao2: and LOTS of luck! It's actually really nice (okay, nicer at OKW, but I just like that resort better overall) - there's a bench, landscaping, and a BIG ashtray!

May I just say that everyone here is a conscientious, courteous smoker, who knows their DSAs etc, and I think the 'other's' should give us some slack! I KNOW we all wish we didn't need this thread, but we do, for courtesy! The same courtesy should be afforded us when we're IN a DSA. Am I right? :thumbsup2

Okay, KimRaye, I'm going to start off by disclaiming: it's early; I didn't sleep well; sometimes I think I'm funnier than I really am.

Okay, with all that out of the way :teeth: I think we should get custom-made clothing - t-shirts, hats, hoodies, whatever one wears - from a site like Zazzle:

Courteous person smoking only where allowed; now get off my @$$ and go breathe somewhere else!

ITA!! :thumbsup2 Maybe just a sign post we can hold up for the 'others' that we HEAR saying - "I smell smoke"! I myself smell smoke in NON DSAs and it annoys me that 'some' get away with that, and possibly ruin our chances at DSA spots. Respect, on both sides is all I ask! :thumbsup2
