And we'll provide the rest!

Hello there. My mother and I just returned from 6 nights and 7 lovely days of food, food, and more food so I thought I'd make an attempt at my first dining review. I took pictures of every single tiny and delicious morsel (or not so much) that entered our mouths. I must give a warning, though, the quality of some of these pictures, unfortunately, isn't the best. I'd love to blame the camera, but that's just because I'm in denial that it may have been the operator's fault. :rolleyes1

Who we are:

Mom- A 56-year-old chocoholic to the core. Pour it, drizzle it, and dunk it in chocolate and she's content. Other than that, she isn't very adventurous with food selections so she sticks to the chicken and steak staples.

Me- I'm 25 and a former picky eater. I've just recently started venturing away from the normal "Southern fare" and trying new things. I'm not a big fan of seafood, but I will try almost anything once.

When:

Saturday, February 6th, 2010 through Friday, February 12th, 2010

Where:
Walt Disney World with a resort stay at Pop Century.

And now on to the good stuff: the list!

We were on the basic dining plan so that entitled us to one table service, one quick service, and one snack per day at $41.99 per person per day. We also chose to add 'Ohana as a pay-out-of-pocket meal.

Day One:
Lunch: Pecos Bill Cafe
Dinner: 'Ohana

Day Two:
Lunch: Tutto Italia
Dinner: Columbia Harbour House

Day Three:
Lunch: Flame Tree Barbecue
Dinner: Rose and Crown

Day Four:
Lunch: Fairfax Fare
Dinner: 50's Prime Time Cafe

Day Five:
Lunch: Casey's Corner
Dinner: Yak & Yeti

Day Six:
Lunch: The Plaza
Dinner: Le Cellier

Day Seven:
Breakfast: Everything Pop at Pop Century

Completion:
Afterthoughts

I'll also be adding the snacks on their respective days.

Edit: This is our third time on the dining plan, the first being DDXP (waaaaay too much food for us), the second was free dining, and this one we paid for the basic plan. I've always been curious as to whether it was an actual value for us, therefore I did keep all the receipts. I'll reveal the results at the end, which will be a surprise to me, too, as I have yet to total everything.

Hope you enjoy! :flower3:

We left the Pop on Feb. 7th. What building were you in? We were in the 60s. How was the weather and crowds while you were there? can't wait to hear your reviews!

Welcome aboard! Thanks for stopping by!

We left the Pop on Feb. 7th. What building were you in? We were in the 60s. How was the weather and crowds while you were there? can't wait to hear your reviews!

We were in the 50's building so I bet we walked right by each other at some point. The crowds were fantastic, actually. With the exception of our last night when we stood in line 55 minutes for Soarin', the longest wait we had was 15-20 minutes. The buses were fairly empty, too, which was so surprising. Was it like that for you, too?

Honestly, I didn't pack for the weather. I've never been to Florida in my life when it was less than steamy so even the 70 degree forecast predictions didn't alarm me that it may be colder than I was expecting. It rained on our 4th day and last day with the average temperature of 56 throughout the trip, which is considerably warmer than it is at home. Then again, I don't spend all day outside at home either, especially not in t-shirts and capris.

Day One: Lunch- Pecos Bill Cafe

After checking into Pop around lunchtime, we decided to head over to the Magic Kingdom for lunch. As it was a first time for the both of us, we knew we wanted to give Pecos Bill a try. Unfortunately, I think the receipt was accidentally tossed for this counter service. I looked up the menu using Allears, but it's not completely current. My mother's meal isn't listed so the pricing for here won't be entirely accurate. :confused3

It didn't start off as a good place for us as we had to wait around 15 minutes for our food. That wasn't a big deal except the drinks were already made and on the tray so by the time we got them, they were pretty watered down.

This is the 1/4 lb Angus somethingoranother bacon cheeseburger. It came with the two onion rings on top. As you can see, she put the fixins bar to great use by adding grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and a huge pile of cheese. All I could get out of her was "mmmmmm" so I'm taking that as it was good.

S7301026.jpg

This is the taco salad. I know I know, where's the lettuce? We'll just say the picky side of me made a nasty reappearance. Anyway, it was meat, cheese, and sour cream so I kind of had it in my head that if I crunched up the shell, it would be like a delicious taco. Only, it didn't turn out that way. The shell was really hard to eat because of the way it bubbled up so it flaked everywhere when I tried to break it off. More of it ended up coating us both than in my mouth. Oops. Also, because it sat on a tray for a while, it was cold by the time I got it. I don't even think I ate half of it.

Our desserts aren't pictured, but we both had the carrot cake. It was extremely dry and the usually yummy icing was overpoweringly sweet so I only took a bite or two.

Oh, and what's that in the corner of the tray? Why, the missing receipt! If only I could read it. . .

Overall, if I did return here I'd try the burger, but I think the taco salad has been retired permanently.

Oh, and sorry about the size differences in pictures. :rolleyes1

Pricing:
Burger- Approximately $8.09
Taco Salad- $7.39
Two Carrot Cakes- $3.59 each
Two Regular Sized Soft drinks- $2.19 each

Approximate Total= $28.80- 1 CS used per person

Day One: Dinner- 'Ohana

Out of all the places we ate, 'Ohana was the one we were both looking forward to trying the most. We had a very late dinner reservation for 9:45, but we took a break after lunch to nap so we didn't mind the time at all. It only took a few minutes after check-in for us to begin our walk-through of the restaurant where my mom received this:

S7301050-1.jpg

The bread was very warm and soft, and I think the coconut and pineapple flavor went well with the rest of the meal.

S7301054-1.jpg

After ordering our drinks, the salad came to the table. I was a little hesitant about the dressing, but I loved it. It was very sweet so it almost completely washed out the lettuce, but it was so delicious that I think I could have made an entire meal on it alone.

S7301055.jpg

Next came the sauces. I don't remember what the first one was, but the middle was a spicy mustard and the third a peanut sauce. I thought the middle sauce was great for the steak while the peanut was perfect companion for the poultry.

S7301058.jpg

Before I had my second bite of salad, the wings and dumplings were served. The wings weren't very saucy or messy, and I loved the almost sweet flavor of them. The dumplings were also very good, but a little too crispy around the edges.

S7301059.jpg

The noodles and broccoli. Oh, the noodles, how I loved thee. These had an extremely mild flavor so I didn't feel like they overpowered any part of the meal. The broccoli was cooked very well, too.

I did get a picture of the meat, but it's very blurry so I'm not going to post it. Instead, I'll just give a brief review over it.
Steak- It was a little tough and not cooked well enough for my mother's tastes, but I thought it was okay.
Shrimp- I didn't try it, but my mom said it had a nice barbecue flavor and she loved it.
Poultry- One person said turkey and the other said chicken so I have no idea which one it was, but I thought it was the best of the four meat selections.
Pork- I have no idea what seasonings they used, but it was overwhelming and absolutely terrible. Yuck.

S7301064.jpg

And, finally, the bread pudding with the banana foster sauce. This was very rich and delicious. The pudding and sauce were warm, which made it pair nicely with the vanilla bean ice cream. I love bread pudding, but this was one of the best I have ever had. The top of it was crispy, but the bottom was soaked in caramel and ice cream goodness so it was nice and soft. Yum.

Overall, we really enjoyed this meal. The only mild complaint I have is that everything came out so quickly that it felt a little rushed to me. By the time I got around to eating the main parts of the meal, the food was cold. But we both agreed we would definitely eat here again.

Total Price= $66.04 paid out of pocket plus tip.

We are going to Ohana for the first time on our trip in April. I am so excited! :yay: I have never had bread pudding before, but that dessert looks amazing.

subbing!

Day Two: Lunch- Tutto Italia

I'd read some very mixed reviews about this restaurant, but I wanted to give it a try at any rate. We had a 1:20 reservation, but arrived about half an hour early and were seated very quickly. After ordering our drinks, we received this:

S7301212.jpg

Tucked beneath the top slices are soft wheat bread, crunchy bread sticks, and a thin wafer. The breadbasket was served with olive oil and the ramekin of olives, which we never ate. The bread was warm, which is always a plus for me. My mother seemed to enjoy the sticks, and I thought the wafer was similar in taste to a normal saltine cracker.

S7301214.jpg

My entree was the Gnocchi Verdi Grataniti, delicious baked spinach potato dumplings in a bed of mozzarella, parmesan, fontina and gorgonzola. Man, oh, man this was incredible. It was extremely creamy with almost a smokey flavor, but not overbearing. I also couldn't taste the spinach at all. To me, though, this wonderful entree alone is worth going back to the restaurant for lunch.

S7301215.jpg

My mother's lunch was the Scaloppine with chicken, which I can't find on the menu. Chicken medallions served with mashed potatoes and sauteed mushrooms in a gravy sauce. She said she liked it, but she'd had better. I didn't try it so I'm not sure exactly how tender the chicken was or how well everything else was cooked.

S7301217.jpg

For dessert we both had the Chocolate Torta, a chocolate and hazelnut cake with whipped cream and raspberry sauce. I thought it was a mild dessert, not overbearingly sweet or chocolaty. The whipped cream did aid in cutting through some of the sweetness and I'm sure the raspberry sauce would have, too, but I didn't eat it.

I was stuffed when I noticed two cast members headed our way carrying another dessert with a candle. Being that we were in the back corner, I turned around but there was no one behind me except for the wall. Yes, they came to sing me happy birthday. :)

S7301218.jpg

Chocolate mousse and whipped cream in a chocolate shell with raspberry sauce, and a chocolate stick. Being as I was already full, I only had a bite or two of it but I actually think I liked it more than the torta. The chocolate mousse was very light with a slight hint of mint and the cup was reminiscent of chocolate coating that ice cream is dipped in.

My mother didn't care too much for the restaurant, but I definitely enjoyed it enough to come back. I'm very glad we gave it a try.

Total Price= $80.94 plus tip- 1 TS used per person

Awesome, I'm so glad that we went there. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did! And, yes, that dessert. :thumbsup2

Great start to your reviews. Really looking forward to reading more :)

Thanks for the reviews, looking forward to more. We are going to Tutto Italia for the first time in June. :)

I have the taco salad at pecos bills in June 2009 and I have to say it was greasy and not what I expected. I probably would not get it again either.
