I am travelling with my granddaughter and would like to stay in touch with her mother while we are away. Cell service is not an option since I have a pay as you go plan. I would like to email from the ship and was reviewing the prices. Can anyone tell me what the $3.95 fee is for? I assumed I could just access my email account through comcast and only be charged for the internet service. See below.
$0.75 USD per minute pay as you go
$27.50 USD for 50 minute plan ($0.55 per minute)
$40 USD for 100 minute plan ($0.40 per minute)
$75 USD for 250 minute plan ($0.30 per minute)
Onboard Email Account
There is an additional charge of $3.95 USD to send an e-mail from your onboard ship e-mail account. There is no charge to receive an e-mail from your onboard e-mail account.

If you use YOUR e-mail account (like hotmail or gmail or whatever), there is no fee. If you open a new e-mail account thru DCL, you will be charged the additional fee.

Based on the fees you have quoted, I assume you're on the Wonder. While I have not tried to locate any internet cafes in Nassau, many islands have free or low cost internet cafes available (I sent some of our finds to the moderators so they could be posted on the stickies). I've found places that rent international cell phones for $3 for 30 minutes and internet rates ranging from free to $5 for an hour. Obviously, this won't help you on days at sea.

The best ways to find free/low cost internet cafes are to google the island in advance and to ask the CMs on the ship. They always know where the good deals are!

I think those prices are out of date. We just sailed 1.16.10 on the Magic and here were our prices:

$0.75 per minute
$55 for 100 minutes
$100 for 200 minutes
$150 for 500 minutes

No mention of an additional $3.95 charge.

The Wonder offers smaller packages consistent with the shorter sailings.

Thanks, that explains a lot. I can use my own email account. Just didn't want to get socked with another fee. I think purchasing the 55 mins would be plenty and not too costly either. Thanks again.
