Question - KTTW Cards

First of all, I made the error of giving my youngest niece and DD charging privledges and I do not want them to have them. I am sure you must be able to change this and, if so, how?

Next - my DH is paranoid about our eldest niece having her own KTTW card... she is 12. As I understand it, the pics taken at port are associated with the card so nobody else can steal the card and use it. However, I want to know if the room number is displayed on the card and does the KTTW card double as a room key?

You can change at check in, or at guest services, at any time.

The room number doesnt appear anywhere on the card, there is a photo connected with the card that shows up on their monitors.

If the card is lost / stolen etc, report it to guest services who will stop it there and then, know this my son mislaid his.

Now on some low price purchases they do not ask for a signature, but, I am sure they have some security on these.

My kids have had charging privileges since they were both 8, it teaches them how to use cards signatures etc, and part form a mislaid card no problem in five cruises.

The KTTW card does double as a room key, however the room number does not appear on the card. That's where magnets or other door decorations come in handy--easier for the child to identify her door. The cards are labeled "M" for minor, and her name and birthdate appear on the card. When the card is scanned, a photo shows up on the CM's screen.

As to charging for a 12 year old....we just tell DD what her limit is for the cruise along with the "bribe" that anything she doesn't spend she will get in cash when we get home. We've never had a problem.

You can easily remove the charging either at check in or at Guest Services after boarding.

Great info! Thank you! My husband was very worried that if one of them lost the card and somebody else found it, there would be a charging frenzy for which we would be responsible. Like I said, he is a bit paranoid - he thought the kids could be robbed for the KTTW cards - on a ship of all places!

I am also having trouble convincing him the staff in the clubs likely won't abuse our children! Maybe once he is on the ship and relaxing, he will chill out a tad. I don't want them running willy nilly everywhere either, but I'd be fine with them hanging out and paging us if they want to leave, etc.

This is a Disney cruise and Disney=Kids, their staff are fully trained on looking after kids and there will not be any abuse at all.

Everyone is very very well trained, my Mrs is a bit of a panickier on kids and she hasn't liked any kids clubs bar the ships ones. They get her approval.

Now, I agree a cruise contract with my kids in advance, in return for allowing them the freedom of the ship ie going to movies, pools, clubs etc, they cannot go in anyone's stateroom, they cannot play with elevators, they must come to dinner and meet at agreed times, ie Topsiders for 12 noon, we leave messages in our rooms, and the kids can call from any phone in the ship to our room. No staying out late without approval.

Having things stolen is unlikely, as the robbers would not be able to get away, its either crew or cruisers, so a captive suspect list and CCTV around, and the cards can be monitored for their use, and tie that up with the CCTV. So unlikely.

This is a really good idea kcashner! I have a 12 year old I'm allowing $5 a day to do with what he wishes. I told him he can use it per day or all at once. I think I'll also offer him the same deal you offer your DD!

Andrew Derek. How old are your kids now? I'm letting my 12 year old have free reign but I have a son that just turned 8 and wasn't planning on letting him do anything on his own. And a question about that... will my 12 year old be able to get his younger brothers out of kids clubs or is it just a parent? Do they have age restrictions for kids running about on their own?

DD is 14 now and DS is 11, but both had charging privileges on ship since they were allowed to do so at 8.

Just checked my DD's KTTW card and on the card is the sailing date, name of ship, an M for minor, dining rotation & table number and her name. It also says Castaway Club member. The birthdate does not appear anywhere on the card, but does come up on the screen when a CM swipes the card.
Everyone should also sign their card so when signatures are checked they match.

Several cruises ago, before they started taking the security pictures, we found a KTTW card on the floor. It did not have a room number on it just the person's name and the other info (dining rotation type stuff). We went to Guest Services and got in line (fairly short). As it turned out as we got to the desk the cast member to the other side of the counter was talking with someone reporting a lost card. We were able to get their card back to them before they had to get their original "cancelled". It was a senior couple they were very upset thinking someone could be charging to their room. The cast member was able to reassure them that no charges had been made. We went off with our new found friends and had a nice ice cream to celebrate.

I really do like the fact that they have added the security picture to the cards.

ha ha..another good idea! My son's actually more responsible with money than I am. I'm considering him actually handling our budget onboard.

My son also thinks he is handling our cruise budget on board, so to avoid it being used up with Arcade cards and ketchup, (yes) I advise him of the daily limit and check at guest services every so often what my bill is.

Now why don't they put it up on your stateroom TV???

Just to clarify -

I know that there are a few room service menu items that are charged for, as well as alcoholic drinks but what other items are chargeable? IE if we (or the kids) go into a gift shop, are those items charged on the KTTW card too?

ANYTHING you buy on the ship is charged to your KTTW card. THis includes photos at Shutters, spa services, items at the gift shops, bagged or boxed candies or snacks from a bar, etc.

Don't forget that arcade cards are also charged to your KTTW card. You insert your KTTW card into the machine and you select an amount to be issued to an arcade card.

You can get a print out from Guest Services at any time of your stateroom account so you can check the charges. In all our cruises I've only had 1 charge that wasn't mine and GS was able to correct it on the last morning since it was a charge that happened at dinner the night before.

Is this true? It really makes it so easy to check you obc everyday on your tv. I hope they get new programs before I go.

DS13 was allowed to check my DD6 out of the kids club last year w/my permission & knowing the password. I gave him the authorization to do so on our online checkin before hand. Not sure at what age they allow an older sibling/relative/friend etc. to do this but, as I said he was 13 & it was okay. I love the idea of telling the kids that DCL will notify you if they go over. Lucky for us, kids can be so gullable!
