Changing planes in London

Still waiting for some decent prices for next summer - in our case to California but question relates generally to flights to US.

Thinking of using BA from Manchester to Los Angeles via Heathrow and wondered if you needed to re-check luggage in at Heathrow (as you do when changing in the States) - just making sure there's enough time between flights - if we do have to recheck luggage in, times between flights seem to be a little tight.

I did GLA-LHR-LAX last year and didn't have to check our bags again at Heathrow. They went straight through to LAX!

If its all with the same carrier which it sounds like it is then you will not have to recheck your luggage

We did MAN-LHR-LAX and return with BMI/VA and all of our luggage was checked through.

My Mum did BMI/LHR and Tia (not sure how to spell it), and they wouldn't check through her luggage.

So I suppose it depends on what airline you are using. Both holidays were booked with VH. BMI told my mum that VH hadn't purchased the correct type of ticket for her luggage to be ticketed through. But guess what on the way back, TIA airways ticketed all the luggage through all the way to Manchester.

A word of warning with ticketed luggage though. If you flight lands early, you won't be able to get on an earlier flight to MAN from LHR, as you don't have your luggage. We could have got the 15.000 ish flight, if we'd have had our luggage as there was room on the flight, but as we didn't have the luggage we had to wait until the 5.45 flight.

make sure you have at least 3 hours between your connecing flights, as you will need the time at LHR. We were delayed an hour due to fog at LHR, and then had a very long walk to the terminal for our VA flight. Also check in on-line before you go, as this saves you time too.

There is less than 2 hours between the flight landing at LHR from MAN to the one LHR to LAX - both legs are with BA and the internal flight lands at the same terminal that the LAX departs from - does this make a difference - do you think that this is enough time?
