We are coming into Sydney from Melbourne domestic for a connecting flight to LA, I am *maybe* wanting to claim a TRS refund and am wondering how long it will take to do at the airport and also if the TRS counter is hard to find?
We have just under 2 hours to change terminals, will I have enough time to get a refund or will I be cutting it fine?

Do you need to recheck your bags in Sydney, or will they be checked through from Melbourne?

I'm pretty sure we only need to check the bags in once in Melbourne and then the airline will transfer them to our connecting flight.

OK admittedly we wern't transferring but :

1 ) it took us about 30 mins to do , there was a longhish queue when we left on a Sunday morning , the actual process probably took 2-3 minutes in total , very simple - make sure you have a bank account or credit card for them to refund the tax to you .

2) It was signposted fairly well but it was tucked away down a corridor in a little room , so it was pretty hard to find if you missed the signs , ask someone in the Duty free shop and they will point you in the right direction.

I wished we claimed more than what we did , we only had a DSi , Camera and Ipod , people in front we're claiming clothes , books and all sorts of stuff , the process was quick and the money was in our account when we came home

I agree with Rossip :)
It all really depends on queues. When I went it was afternoon and there was no wait...so as rossip says the process is quick! but if there is a queue that will be the delay.

Never thought to claim clothes, books or any of that stuff! wow...
I've only done cameras and video cameras.
There is a cost limit though right? I think we have actually normally pretty much filled that...I will have to check into this before we go though...

Claims at airports are available up to 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of your flight.

We have just bought some ski gear which we will be claiming, parkas, pants, gloves, skis etc. Our ski shop has kept it on lay-by until the 30 day window. A friend of mine bought new clothes for all her kids and claimed it all, just remember that it must be a minimum transaction of $300. You also have to have it on your carry on luggage (except for the skis, there is a different process apparently)

Hi All,
My ignorance is showing….but what it TSR exactly? It sounds like I’m missing out on an excellent savings opportunity….

Tourist refund scheme(I think)
You can claim back your GST on any goods you buy in the 30 days prior to departure that will be used on your holiday.
IT is great if you want to buy cameras, ipods etc, as you can buy them at any store then claim the refund instead of buying them duty free.
AS an example a camera may be $400 RRP the duty free price would be $360 (ie 10% GST free) however that camera could be on special for $350 in Myer so you can buy it there then claim back the GST at the airport ($350-$35=$315) so you effectively can save more money.
The only condition is there is a minimum $300 transaction.
You can claim any goods (including clothing)you need for your holiday but you must have the goods in your carry on when you claim.

The additional good thing re cameras...is there is no more stapled bag etc. You can use the stuff instantly and work with it etc.

One thing I just want to check though...yes the minimum invoice for a claim is $300 but it also still has to total to under $900 per adult and $450 per child right??
The duty free limits?
Indeed you can pool as a family (so for 2A 3C $3150) but you can't go over this in what you claim in the TRS right?

Just trying to clarify...we mainly brought back DF cosmetics last time rather than using TRS.

That's my understanding and it counts to what you bring back into Australia. So if in the example you claim $2500 on the way out, that reduces your duty free limit to $650 on reentry.
