The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

H Girls, I do exchanges on the Dis & this one may be something some of you foodies might enjoy....it's really fun to do.

Aimee, I'm so sad for you that your not getting the relief you so deserve.

Nan, the wine sounds delicious!

My hair & nails are 10/14!!!! I think I might try something shorter.

Dinner was left overs & CAKE!

Tomorrow night is bison filet, not sure of the sides.

I am so weak. I caved the heat was turned on this morning. It got down into the 40's last night.

Maria i thought you said you had leftover cake for dinner:lmao:Of course nothing is wrong with that.:thumbsup2

I used to do the waxing of my brows but then a person at the salon needed a guinea pig. I was it she was doing electrolysis. That was perfect for the kid that invented the unibrow.:rolleyes1

I think I am making a big pot of soup for tonight. It is going to be a yucky day no sun cold and rainy. So I think a day of cooking will make me feel good. I'll be back later to let you know what kind of soup.

Good morning everyone! Hailey is doing a little better with things now. She still doesn't understand what is going on and there isn't a way to explain it to her, but she doesn't freak out anymore at the sight. Now she just gets upset with us taking her to the bathroom more than she wants to go. We've learned to work quickly and once we sped the process up, she was much more tolerant. (Sorry, probably way too much info).

Anyway, I've been so tired at night chasing her around and Mom comes over every evening when I get home from work so I haven't had much computer time to catch up in the evenings. Hopefully our work computer situation will be fixed so I can keep up better next week.

Kenny is out this morning meeting with a lot clearing contractor to get a quote on clearing the lot next to my Mom's house. It is 1/2 acre, so we are expecting it to be a rather large expense. We have decided that it would be easier for us to live next door to her, especially if we are going to be taking care of her.

We have selected a house plan which took quite a while since we had to pick one with all the living areas on the first floor since Hailey can't manage stairs. But we have finally found one we both like and after vacation we plan on starting the contractor bidding process. One thing I know for certain - the idiot that STILL hasn't finished in my current house will not be allowed on the property!

Sorry I haven't had time to read back. Please forgive me my friends.

Gretchen I am praying that you and your family can catch a break. You deserve it. Poor Hailey and Poor you. It is hard enough explaining things to kids let alone kids with special issues. Good luck with the house.

Nan - Your wine evenings sound great!;)

Let's say that I am now not dreading winter :lmao:

I'm contemplating color with my cut this time. I'm worried abt upkeep and the cost involved. I also wonder if I should try to wear my hair natural until I can't anymore thanks to gray since I'll spend half my life paying for color and save it now  I have some gray but nothing I can't yank out with tweezers.

We have them near us, and at times they are taking small pets. I've seen them walking the street at night. Coyotes are amazing in that they can make themselves sound like a pack but when it's really just one - it's a hunting trait they have. I've been doing a lot of reading on them and they really are amazing animals - I just don't want them near mine!

I did not start coloring my hair until my oldest, Donny, told me that I looked good but I would look better if I was not so gray . Yup. The only sensitive one I have told me as gently as he could that I looked old :rotfl::rotfl:

At the end of my road, is a sandpit. It has not been used in years and is surrounded by woods. The dogs are always there in the night. I never let my cats go out and am always appalled that my neighbors do. They have lost several ans yet continue to let them out. It was heartbreaking to see their little Granddaughter asking if we had seen Muffin. She was out with her Nana calling and calling a poor little kittie that was never coming home. Still the rest are out daily! :headache::mad::headache:

That is my kind of dinner! Bison? My DH would be kissing your feet!

I am so weak. I caved the heat was turned on this morning. It got down into the 40's last night.

Buddy has been putting the heat on lately. I keep shutting it off. Of course he is not suffering from constant heat waves that have nothing to do with temperature:rolleyes1

I am in awe that you have been able to keep her calm. That is frightening even when a girl has been prepared, having to manage without really understanding the process must be very hard. You and Kenny are wonderful parents!

I am excited for your family! You have found a way to look after your Mom and yet you all are still independent of each other. I remember after losing my Dad, my Mom really enjoyed her grandchildren and would have loved to have them so close to her. I would have moved Heaven and Earth to have Marisa next door, we both miss having them here. Next door would have been perfect!

Well Buddy has an MRI today at 1. He told me that the pain is not too bad today and he feels it when he moves in some directions. I hope it is a pinched nerve and PT makes it go away.

We are going to have kielbasa and fried potatoes and onions for dinner. It is comfort food for him and easy for me. I don;t think any of the kids are coming today, Marisa and jeff are taking Kady to the Toy Story movies so they are going to be gone all afternoon.

She is going to have a movie birthday party for Kady. The theater charges for that movie, a Go Box and then a fee to use a little room. No food can be brought in so Marisa may just have a cupcake for the kids to take home. She cannot give then more junk and and she cannot feed them dinner. She is a little concerned that parents will want to stay and that she will get socked with the bill but I think she can find a way to word the invitation so that they know that there will be plenty of supervision. She generally takes all the kids to supper an invites the parents to join them but this year she really does not want to incur that expense.

Kat- are you staying off of that ankle???????????????????

I'll BBL! Have a good day!

Good morning!

I went through and multi-quoted yesterday or the day before, but I'm not sure I finished it and posted. :confused3

Glynis - that is wonderful news about your dad! :yay:

The temps dipped into the 20's here over night so it is a bit chilly this morning.

BRRRR! And the 20s is "a bit chilly"? Uh yeah I think that's what we were saying at work the other morning about the mid-50s. :lmao:

Sounds like a fun weekend. We did a lot of these types of fundraisers in both of my kids' schools. And I agree that some of the families just had too much money!

I've never worked in a school with that problem! :rotfl:

I am so weak. I caved the heat was turned on this morning. It got down into the 40's last night.

Oooh, I think I would have had the heat on too!

I've been walking a lot more. I'm waiting for the scale to reflect this. :headache: It appears to have a delayed reaction.

DH and I are planning to go to the festival today too. Yesterday the weather was nasty in the morning but nice the afternoon and evening. We lost power at work yesterday morning for about an hour, but the weather wasn't all that bad. This morning it is so nice and I hope it holds out.

Last night for dinner we had chicken that was cooked in the crockpot and mashed potatoes. They were both good. The chicken was very tender.

Aimee – My doc & I had a laugh, he asked if I felt my sprain when it happened and I told him when you’re my age and are jogging on a treadmill you feel many aches and pains that are just chalked up to old age!

Your bff really has her hands full, 3 under the age of 3!:worship:

Janice – Enjoy your day cooking your soup, I love days like that!:cloud9:

Gretchen – I’m happy to hear that Hailey is doing better. I’ve told you this before but it needs to be said again. You are a very special woman and I can’t begin to understand or imagine all that you have to deal with but I do know how much I admire you. That’s why I love you so much too!

Yay on the house, how exciting! Now we have both you & Lauren building!!!

Nan – I’ll be praying for you & Buddy today. I am doing my best staying off my ankle but I have to get to the grocery store today. The rest of the weekend I’ll be good!:goodvibes

Bethany & Sheryl – Have fun at the festival!:thumbsup2

WFD - Johnny is going back to that Asian restaurant we discovered last weekend and picking up some of that yummy Dungeness crab in a black bean sauce for us so I won't have to be in the kitchen, on my feet, cooking! Tomorrow I will have to cook, I can't have my boy go back to Baton Rouge with no food!;)

bbl.......

It is such a dreary day here. I am planning on spending the day just relaxing and cooking. I have some short ribs that I am going to braise and I think I will make some bread.

Here is a picture of last night's dinner. A wedge salad with blue cheese and bacon, baked orzo, and chicken stuffed with goat cheese and basil.

Yucky day today...
Just hanging out with Greg & Lily until he starts homework.
I have some artsy projects I was going to start today but it's not looking good.

Nan, please give us the Buddy report when you get home.
Yesterday I had a delivery I didn't expect......DH ordered a huge amount of bison from an organic farm. We have filets, stew meat, burgers & sirloins.

Gretchen, I think building next door to Mom is a wonderful idea.

Janice, seems like I'll be wearing one of your favorite outfits today...sweats & ponytail : )

Kat, rest.

Bethany, how is school going?

Sheryl & Bethany have a great time today......

I think the sides will be roasted brussel sprouts & sweet potatoes.

I decided on cheddar cheese soup and beer bread.

Maria Yes you are wearing my fav outfit. I have on sweat shirt jeans and my crocs 2nd fav,

Oh I am about to start making pumpkin cookies. I hope I have some left for dinner.:rolleyes1

I've been doing a lot of reading on them and they really are amazing animals - I just don't want them near mine!

I don't blame you. We have coyotes around here as well. My ILs lost their cat to coyotes.

I can see why your best friend would need the company! I'm glad you had a nice time together.

I am so weak. I caved the heat was turned on this morning. It got down into the 40's last night.

I turned mine on two days ago. I just can't stand it when the house is 60 or below.

Gretchen -- I'm glad Hailey is handling things better. I agree that you are one amazing mom! Building a brand new house next to your mom sounds perfect. Good luck!

Let's say that I am now not dreading winter
 I hope Buddy gets good news today. I can't believe parents would expect Marisa to pick up the bill for dinner at a children's birthday party unless the parents were specifically invited.

I decided on cheddar cheese soup and beer bread.

Yum! That sounds good!

I haven't decided what I'm having for dinner. I am making clam chowder, but I might save that for Monday after skating. If I don't have the chowder, I have kielbasa and pierogies.

I just opened a jar of Trader Joe's pumpkin butter...it's thin but yummy so I'm going to make a bread pudding with left over raisin challah bread & use the pumpkin butter with some rum as a sauce......

Hey y'all,

Sorry I didnt check in before taking off for the fest yesterday. DH came home early.

We had fun, ate some good food, heard a few local bands. The highlight for us yesterday was meeting & chatting with a local true German Brewmaster & his wife! Sat for 2 hours chatting about beer making, german wine & german food! (plus a few free beers;)) It felt like the start of F&W fest for us.

Kathy is smart for staying home. I gave her bad advice to come on out anyway. Now I'm hurting after one day and Chicago is tonight. I'm going, but won't forget my chair today!

Gretchen, I'm glad to hear the Hailey has calmed down. You are one impressive Mom to be able to manage to calm her when she doesn't understand why.

Nancy, Your such a good Nana! You come up with a new idea every year for Kady's Halloween party. She's a lucky girl. Prayers for you & Buddy!

Maria, I enjoyed chatting yesterday! I'm assuming you told Kathy of our gift plan? I just can't wait to meet you girls!:goodvibes

Aimee, DON'T PULL OUT THOSE GRAY HAIRS! DD hair stylist told her that can damage that hair shaft permanently & later cause thinning of your hair. He recommended cutting them close to the scalp instead. If you can get away with not coloring now, I would recommend that. I starting graying in my late 20's, starting highlighting then to cover it & have never been able to stop. Root touchups every 5-6 wks & highlighting every few months. I can't imagine how much money I've spent over the years!

Janice, I'm jealous that you don't have to tweeze!

Bethany, I guess we'll see you out there sometime later today!

Gotta run, parking is going to be a hassle, I guess I'll have to get out there early & just to a lot of sitting. Ugh I'm going to be tired tomorrow.

Maria – I’ve never had bison, take pics please!!!!:goodvibes

Becky – Gosh I wish I lived closer to you. I could totally enjoy elevating my ankle all day if I could watch you cook.

Janice – Pumpkin cookies sound so yummy!

Maria – Your bread pudding sounds yummy as well!

Sheryl – Kyle told us it was insanely crowded last night at the Fest. Sounds like y’all had a great time. Hopefully y’all will have a great time today as well.:goodvibes

Sorry I haven't had time to read back. Please forgive me my friends.

I don't know you have time to read anything at all with what you have on your plate right now! Building a house sounds amazing but I know it's extremely stressful. We "built" but in a subdivision with a specific builder. Not custom or anything.

Your bff really has her hands full, 3 under the age of 3!:worship:

Well, #2 and #3 were not planned, esp #3, and they are really stuggling. I wish I lived closer. I hate to see her like that and wish I could be of more help.

We went to bed really late (230am) and I had to be up at 730 so I'm dragging now that the retreat is over and I'm home. This retreat thing is getting really old  It's not restful for me at all!

DH is meeting a friend this afternoon for a linner, I guess, so I have no idea what I'll do tonight. We haven't been home enough to mess with buying groceries yet.

Does anyone have a tried and true beer cheese soup recipe?

Have you tried the Le Cellier recipe? I think that is a good starting point. I use that as a guideline and then change things.

I know your friend is having a really hard time now, but it will get easier. One of my neighbors had four girls, all less than two years apart. Her life was insane for a while, but now three of them are in school, and they are all really close and play well together.

Sheryl -- I hope you enjoyed Chicago. Is that the band or the musical?

Kathy -- I'm glad you're taking it easy.

I ended up having the kielbasa and pierogies tonight. The kielbasa was so good! The clam chowder is in the fridge aging for next week.

Dinner changed. We stopped for a late lunch after buddy's test and there is enough for a light supper. The MRI will be read sometime on Monday so I'll call the Dr on Tuesday. We stopped in to see Kady and my little Angel was sick. We brought them all lunch and she was able to eat a little pizza and put her pasta fagiole soup away for later. I'll make her chicken soup tomorrow. Marisa said she had gone up to rest becasue she really wanted to go to see her movie. Marisa had to call the theater and tell them that she had prepurchased the tickets and ask if they could come in another time before Kady would take her jeans off and relax. Poor thing was ore worried about those silly tickets than she was about her sore throat, runny nose and headache. We are not taking her out to Mass and catechism tomorrow morning. I want her to rest.

Kat- I know that Kyle is never leaving your home without a home cooked meal :lmao:

Sheryl- the last time I had a cut, color and highlights the bill was $150 plus tip. I was :scared1:, the prices on all of the services had gone up and I did not know. The stylist is the owner adn she told me revenue was down 20%. Keep raising those prices and watch it go down more! I am trying a new place for a cut and color. I am afraid to let a new person mess with the highlights.

Sorry, Aimee...I just looked at the Le Cellier recipe, and that isn't what I use at all! I'll try to find the one I do use. I have made the Le Cellier one though. I left out the celery, because I hate celery, and I blended all the ingredients to make the soup smooth before adding the cheese and beer. If you need the recipe, it is on the first page of the Disney Recipes page, or I know it is posted on our thread somewhere.

Nancy -- I'm sorry Kady is sick. I hope she feels better quickly!
