The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

I just realized we now have two Lauri’s. To avoid confusion we could use screen names or Lauri D and Lauri U.:upsidedow

Lauri U – Please let me know if you see the Iron Chef sauces!!!! Actually the black bean recipe was the worst of the two. I had to doctor it up a lot.

Ellen – Glad you came up for air from that mound of paperwork.:flower3:

Aimee – I hope you get to spend some quality time with Mom!

Laura – Glad y’all enjoyed the concert and enough to go again tonight!!! Yes, Kyle has another tryout on Wednesday.

Maria – Hope you have a wonderful time!:goodvibes

Gretchen - Thinking of you.

Afternoon all, hope you are all well. We had one of the worst summer's ever- weather wise- but boy, fall is really making up for it. We are having the best weather.

Aimee- Enjoy visiting with your mom.

Kathy- I'm still straighting out names, two of the same will really throw me. I hope your doing well. Good luck Kyle!

Laura- Glad you had a great time and have fun tonight too!

Maria- Enjoy your trip, sounds like you'll have a lot of fun.

Nancy- The chuckwagan casserole was a hit- my husband loved it, he want's it again this week. It was so easy to, I told him he could probably learn how to make- you should have seen the fear wash over his face.

Vickie- My daughter had a reaction to sunscreen one time in disney. Her face was pretty blotchy, made for some interesting pictures. We use aquafor too, if you can get that it's pretty amazing. The kiddo gets chapped lips so bad they bleed, aquafor seems to help the most.

Ann- I never really liked Williamsburg as a kid (except for the blacksmith, kitchens...the fun stuff) but now I really want to go back. We were going to go this sping but our kitty got sick so we skipped a vacation incase he needed surgery. I think it's close enough to do a long weekend there. While I want to go, if I had to pick between there and Disney- disney wins. Either choice, you'll have a great time.

Olive garden soup for dinner. I made it last week but the kale I bought for it came in such a huge bunch- don't want to waste it.

Enjoy the day everyone!

Maria- enjoy your visit and pamper that Mommy to be a little bit!

Kat- That is too bad about the braised pork, it looked good. I did wonder about the beans though, the ingredients just did not seem to be enough to kick them up, they need some spice and a little smoke I think.

Laura- would be in a coma if I was out two night is a row :rotfl2: Have fun!

Glynis- that poor baby! Teething is awful. Welby told me that Tylenol can dull the pain but it is always there for them.

Lauren- I don't envy the move you have in front of you! I send you lot's of :wizard::wizard::wizard: while you pack! I hope the visit with your Mom goes well

Ellen- Monday Monday....can't trust that day.........................

SO far I have a chicken noodle soup made. I have no energy to think about dinner yet.

The DIS is running so slow for me today!! I can't go back to catch up because the pages won't load. I hope everyone is doing well.

Going to U2 again tonight. I am SOOOO tired! I don't know if I am going to make it to the end of the concert. I guess this means I am really getting old.

Not sure wfd yet...maybe just something at the stadium.

Quick fly by...I am waiting for the baby to wake up so I can go...

Maria, Have an awesome trip! I had left over beef bourg. (sp) for lunch...it was even better today!!! :goodvibes

Laura and Becky have fun tonight...

Lauren- I don't envy the move you have in front of you! I send you lot's of :wizard::wizard::wizard: while you pack! I hope the visit with your Mom goes well

I hope you start feeling better really soon!

Although I have to go through alot of stuff t discard, the relocation company will send a company here to pack. They do everything except the attic...which I have been saying I will organize for years...guess I have to now. Of course I will go through stuff too so I can throw away alot and maybe have a sale. We are selling alot of our furniture too.

OK...BBL

Hey Y'all,

I've been reading through this morning, while trying to upload a couple of pictures to photobucket. Anyone using that? It has gotten so slow!

We had a nice day yesterday. DH & I missed church because we overslept & old age morning achiness got the best of both of us. So I cooked. I've been trying out different sourdough bread recipes, yesterday was a french sourdough with an overnight rise. It came out so good that it's all gone & I'm baking again today. (Trying out the no-knead recipe Becky has used, hope it comes out as nice!) Angelina, Chris & Alexis came over after church & we watched the Saints win big! We had "soda can chicken" using wine & herbs. SisIL Amy's chicken & sausage gumbo, the bread & salad. Here's some pics:

IMG_2068a.jpg

Alexis eating gumbo but more excited that the bread is out of the oven!

One I forgot to post last week, Grilled Margherita Pizza.
IMG_2065a.jpg

I was worried about all that wine, cloves. Absolutely no problems. Really tasty. I also used wolfgang pucks beef stock. This may be a pricey recipe but one well worth it. I am definetely going to make this again.

Before I forget Sheryl World Market now has an explorers club. Buy 6 bottles of and get 10% off.

That beef stew sounds yummy! Thanks for the heads up, I picked up the card last week, but forgot to sign up for it!

Nancy, I hope you get over the Nola bug very soon! There is just no possible way to keep from catching baby germs when they love to give sloppy kisses! How is Nola feeling?

Vickie, I'm sorry the boy is sick! Hopefully y'all will get all of the illnesses out of the way before your holiday.:wizard:

Kat, I'm sorry you're dizzy & have an ear infection again! That is odd that you've starting having that now. What does your dr. think about it?

Laura & Becky, I'm glad you were able to see U2 & will do it again tonight! Woohoo! :cool1:
Laura, Take a nap so you can make it through the evening.

Lauren, Your sis is so right about that! You are such a friendly person, you'll make new friends right away! Plus you'll have us to support you where ever you go!

Maria, Have fun in Palm Beach!:goodvibes I hope your Mom feels better!

Aimee, I want to see the furniture you painted!

Ellen, I hope all that work on your desk disappears !:wizard:

Hope I didn't forget anyone!

So,3 weeks out from his long awaited trip to WDW round his wee eyes is red raw.:sad1:

Poor guy!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bras were :scared1::eek::scared1: when I put them on, this 52 YO gal cannot wear a bra filled with some kind of "stuff" ( at this point in my life I am trying to get rid of extra padding, not add it on) and those pretty panties were really thongs. I have enough issues with pants moving around and ending up in places where pants are not supposed to lodge without placing something there on purpose!

:rotfl:

Just so you know, the padding is to make you smooth and rounded! ;)

Lauri U – Please let me know if you see the Iron Chef sauces!!!! Actually the black bean recipe was the worst of the two. I had to doctor it up a lot.

That's me, always causing trouble and confusion :lmao:.
What's interesting is that this is the first time I've come across someone else who spells it that way. It's usually with an "e" on the end or spelled Lori with the "o".
I cook black beans a few times a year so I was curious how hers came out. I guess I’ll stick with my way on that.
Good luck to Kyle on Wednesday. I know how excited I am for him, so I can imagine how you feel!

Good luck with the move. One good thing about our last move is that we didn't have anything to move. Katrina did a good job of cleaning out our house for us!:rolleyes1

Aimee, have fun with your Mom! Sorry you have dinner conflicts.

Becky and Laura - two U2 concerts in 2 nights!! I’d be exhausted after one. I definitely don’t do late nights anymore.

Maria - have a good trip.

Sheryl that food looks really good.

I need a nap, just finished working in a program, children are NOISY! :headache:

Having quiche for dinner tonight. My DM went to Costco yesterday and they were sampling them so she got some. Have that with a couple veggies.

BBL to read...we were at parents all day.

WFD- oven baked wings, oven roasted red potatoes, & corn on cob.

Just so you know, the padding is to make you smooth and rounded! ;)

And it sure did round me out :rotfl2:

I cook black beans a few times a year so I was curious how hers came out. I guess I’ll stick with my way on that.

Would you tell us your method? I have never cooked black beans from dried, I usually add them to a recipe so they are not standing alone.

I had planned on smothered pork chops with mashed white sweet potatoes but Buddy said no cooking tonight so who am I to argue????? It will be chicken noodle soup for me and soup and sandwiches for buddy. Welby is coming down for some soup and will leave some beef stew that she made. Nola loved the chicken rice soup I made last week so I think she will enjoy this one. Marisa still has some of that one so she is waiting for the cabbage soup I'll make next. Unless Lauri's black bean recipe makes me crave black bean soup :thumbsup2

Afternoon all! It's been in the words of the Bangles " Just another Manic Monday" And we still have soccer practice and our weekly Monday Night Football get together. My allergy stuff has now turned into a lovely cold and it's making me really grumpy. That and my dog gave me a big fat lip last night when she accidentally head-butted me getting so excited b/c hte doorbell rang. Nice.

WFD tonight is going to be whatever the MNF hosts are fixing. I think it's taco night, but I'm not sure. I'm not cooking, so that's a major plus! I'll try to bbl to catch up. But know that I'm thinking of ya'll!

The No Knead Sourdough Bread that I baked today. I haven't cut into it yet, I'll let y'all know if it's as good as it looks.

IMG_2077a.jpg

Dinner will be leftover chicken, sauteed spinach & of course bread! So much for that diet I was going to go on!:sad2: I was hoping to get my eating under control & drop a few lbs before I met a few of you next month! Oh well there be more of me to hug!!

Augh, I really do hate painting. This was my first time spraying furniture. I primed it with 2 coats of Kilz - just using a brush - but really wanted a brushless finish that a sprayer will give. So, a friend loaned me theirs and my dad helped me do it. Lot of work, but they look perfect!

I just have to share my husband's experience with Kilz. Many, many years ago, we experience a flood in our basement. It was awful! We had about 3 feet of water, and it ruined EVERYTHING!!!

Alan fixed everything, and was ready to paint. He bought some Kilz primer (thinking that would kill any mold that he didn't get), then he started to mask off the basement. My over achiever husband masked off every window, every door, and every possible air vent. Then he loaded his paint sprayer with the Kilz and went to work. He was down in those fumes for about 45 minutes. I was upstairs, and the fumes were getting to me, so I went down to get him to take a break. I could barely see him through the plastic sheeting that he had draped over the doorway, but he was hunched over, breathing very oddly! I called to him, and he looked up at me and started yelling. Then he ran at me and threw a punch at my face, screaming "They're coming to get me!!!" I ran upstairs and called my neighbor. He came over and between us we got Alan upstairs, and an ambulance called. Our neighbor also called the fire department. Alan was hallucinating quite badly, so the ambulance took him away to the hospital. The fire chief told me we were lucky that no one had lit a match anywhere near that basement, as the trapped fumes were so thick, it would have blown us sky high!

Later, at the hospital, Alan told me that he had seen trolls coming to get him. He was very embarrassed about the whole episode! That year for Christmas, I got him a whole selection of troll dolls!

Afternoon, everyone! We had another long night last night due to a cold that Timothy has picked up. At least his teeth aren't bugging him.

Dinner last night was yummy! I simply pan fried pork chops and then served them with a rhubarb chutney that was really good. If anyone wants the chutney recipe, I'll post it.

Dinner tonight is lemon chicken and pasta. It's quick and easy which is good since I'm really behind on my studies, and need to buckle down and get some stuff done. I've spent today studying the sensory system and the endocrine system. Now, I've got the test to take before I can move along. Can I just say that my eyes are blurry??? Way too many medical terms! Oh well!

I hope everyone is doing well. You are always in my thoughts and prayers!

Just giving special :hug: to Ann & Ellen. The cards you sent were an enormous source of comfort for me. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart.:grouphug:

It is leftovers for us tonight.

Lauri (zip) The handyperson is born from necessity and because i am a control freak. I hate waiting for someone to arrive when ever.:rolleyes1 Since most things and just a mouse click away I have taught myself many things. Installing a garbage dispoisal was a install and unstall. I almost flooded my kitchen. I forgot to poke out the plug when you have a dishwasher. I don't always read ALL the instructions.

Maria Have a great time with your friend

Becky Laura Have a great time. I heard only good things when U2 was here.

Lauren I don't think I want to even think about moving. I have way too much junk.

Robin Just the mental picture of your husband's face had me rolling. :rotfl2:

Glynis I'm glad you were even in the house at the time to check on Alan. I did something like that with bleach and some cleaner I can't remember which. I never mix anymore.

Kathy I hate when recipes look so good but don't turn out as well as I hoped. I don't cook Rachel Rays stuff for that reason.:confused3

Dinner tonight was marinaded swordfish, cous cous & salad.

I did come here to post something, now I can't remember:confused3

The DIS is running so slow for me today!! I can't go back to catch up because the pages won't load. I hope everyone is doing well.

Going to U2 again tonight. I am SOOOO tired! I don't know if I am going to make it to the end of the concert. I guess this means I am really getting old.

The dis is slow for me, too.

Have fun at the concert - is this the same one as last night that was so good you wanted to see again?

Although I have to go through alot of stuff t discard, the relocation company will send a company here to pack. When we moved here, they paid for people to pack and I swear we will NEVER move without that again!! It was fabulous.

The No Knead Sourdough Bread that I baked today. I haven't cut into it yet, I'll let y'all know if it's as good as it looks.

I am DROOLING over that bread!!

 That is SCARY!! I'm glad I did mine in an open garage when I used the Kilz.

Vickie, Nice to see you! Congrats to you and your cousin on her having a baby! I hope the Boy gets better soon...my sister has eczema and when she breaks out, its bad. She mostly gets it on her hands. I meant to tell you some time ago, congrats to the Boy on the dance. Did he move into the other group?

Vickie -- Can you get medicated Aquaphor there? Liam gets eczema sometimes, and that clears it up pretty quickly.

.

The flamin in his skin has died down lots today.

Its now dry and flaky....thats what he hates most, he says its itchyer now but I see a big improvement.

He has a very mild cortisone cream I use behind his legs but I just use an emollient on his face.

I have not seen Aquaphor over here,is it something I could pick up over the counter next month ?

Lauren,he did get moved to the other class and on the way out one of the older boys fist bumped him and told him he had " skillz ".....made his day !!

Wee boys fae Bonnyrigg being all " street " toooo funny !! :rotfl2:

Becky - Im glad you enjoyed U2 but two nights in a row, good going !!

Ann - Im glad your weather is good,we are also having a better fall than summer.:thumbsup2:

Afternoon, everyone! We had another long night last night due to a cold that Timothy has picked up. I've spent today studying the sensory system and the endocrine system. Now, I've got the test to take before I can move along.

Glynis Im sorry your wee scone is poorly.

And I am in awe of you lassie....kids,baby AND study !! :worship:

We are going to MNSSHP on our trip and we are dressing up.
The plan was The Incredibles, but The Boy is too big to be Dash and too small to fit Mr Incredible.

Im gutted ( the thought of tight red lycra kinda appealed ;)) but DH and the boy...not so upset..:confused3:laughing:

So,plan B...Ghost Busters !!

This is going to go down much better because its The Boys fav film of the moment.

Im going to get the outfits but keep it hush - hush, partly for the surprise factor and partly for the cost !!

Oh and lassies, whats dress code for CG ?

More for DH and the boy.
We have never eaten " posh " at WDW before,DH has never even worn long troosers there !!

Take care of you and yours...xx
