The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Kathy - Yeh, the house closed....Im chuffed for you.

Is Kyle sick ?

Ive got to take the boy to the doc's this week.

He suffers from mild eczema, mild because we cut out Dairy from his diet(anyone with a skin condition believe me when I say " Dairy is the Devil " ) but we have found it is very emotional reactive.
If he is worried, sad and especially excited it breaks out bad.

So,3 weeks out from his long awaited trip to WDW round his wee eyes is red raw.:sad1:

Bless my sensitive wee scone.

It was just a cold and congestion, he's fine now. Your poor boy, I'll pray that he is all cleared up in time for his big vacation!

Vickie - I feel bad for your "wee scone". I'd offer a hug but if it's a skin condition, that might hurt! So, a dusting of pixie dust it is! pixiedust:

And congratulations on the newest member of your clan! :goodvibes

Ok here is the beef stew recipe It is really really good :thumbsup2 I used Estancia cabernet sauvigon. By the way that is a really good Cab

The Ultimate Beef Stew
Recipe courtesy Tyler Florence
• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, for frying, plus more to drizzle
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 to 3 pounds beef chuck shoulder roast, cut into 2-inch pieces (this cut is also called chuck shoulder pot roast and chuck roast boneless)
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1 bottle good quality dry red wine (recommended: Burgundy)
• 8 fresh thyme sprigs
• 6 garlic cloves, smashed
• 1 orange, zest removed in 3 (1-inch) strips
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
• 2 bay leaves
• 2 1/2 cups beef stock
• 9 small new potatoes, scrubbed clean and cut in 1/2
• 1/2 pound carrots, peeled and sliced
• 2 cups frozen pearl onions, a large handful
• 1 pound white mushrooms, cut in 1/2
• 1/2 pound garden peas frozen or fresh
• Fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped, for garnish
Preheat a large heavy-bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat with the oil and butter.
While the pan is heating, arrange the flour on a large dish. Season the cubed beef with some salt and freshly ground black pepper and then toss in the flour to coat. Shake off the excess flour and add the beef chunks in a single layer to the hot pan, being careful not to over crowd the pan, you might have to work in batches. Thoroughly brown all of the cubes on all sides. Once all the meat has been browned remove it to a plate and reserve.
Add the wine to the pan and bring up to a simmer while you scrape the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon being sure to loosen up all those tasty bits. Once the wine has gotten hot add the browned meat, thyme, smashed garlic, orange zest strip, ground cloves, freshly ground black pepper and salt, to taste, bay leaves and beef stock. Bring the mixture up to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook uncovered until the liquids start to thicken, about 15 to 20 minutes. Cover and cook on low heat for 2 1/2 hours.
After 2 hours add halved potatoes, sliced carrots, pearl onions and mushrooms, along with a pinch of sugar to balance out the acid from the red wine. Turn the heat up slightly and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes more, until the vegetables and meat are tender. Add the frozen peas during the last minute of cooking. Season with salt and pepper and remove the thyme sprigs.

I thought I would have time to read everything this afternoon but I don't - I'll be back.

I got off work at 3pm and we painted when I got home - the clean up took more time than the painting! You know Blue Man Group? I was a one person White Woman Group. Covered!

We have a new member dinner tonight - I have to leave in a few minutes but I'll be back later to respond to everyone!

I was worried about all that wine, cloves. Absolutely no problems. Really tasty. I also used wolfgang pucks beef stock. This may be a pricey recipe but one well worth it. I am definetely going to make this again.

Before I forget Sheryl World Market now has an explorers club. Buy 6 bottles of and get 10% off.

:lmao:...R U for hire??? I have a little boy's room that still needs to be painted!;)

Vickie, I so glad you checked in!
So sorry for the "boy". Hope the doctor makes him feel better.
Welcome BABY BENJAMIN!!!! Wonderful news!
Know you can always post the bad here as well as the good~

Kat, how's the vertigo?

Janice, that recipe sounds delicious.

Dinner was roasted turkey breast, mashed potatoes, carrots & roasted brussel sprouts.

Tom's Mom and Charlene and family came by yesterday and we went out to eat. This is Tom's last weekend here. :sad1: Andrew also had his first soccer game and we had landscapers here all day doing our wall. This is a project that we were going to take on for years and it just never happened. We would have killed each other. You should have seen the guy climbing trees to get the vines out. Then they were hoisting the saw up to him to use and he was swinging that around...nuts!

Thank you Sheryl for the reminder...I wanted to tell you guys that when we were making the decision to move, it was very difficult. And I was talking to my sister Jane about it and she said something along these lines to me..."Look at all the great friends you made on the computer. You will be fine...meeting new people and keeping the friends that you have made all around the country". It was just comforting to hear and to know that my family knows the wonderful friendships that we all have made here. Love you guys!

Tough weekend for everyone, I'm sure

Amy I'll be down there(Disney) to from 12/17-12/31 Hope we have nice weather.

:yay: What hotel will you be at? Have you decided where you'll have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners?

Well, it was another long, night here. Timothy was cranky, feverish, and come to find out he was cutting 2 new teeth. They finally broke through sometime during the night, but it was a long process! Poor little guy! None of my other kids ever had such a hard time with teeth.

Poor guy  and poor mom

Hey lassies....

Sorry Ive been MIA this week but Ive " had a week !! "

Some good, some bad and some bloody crappy.

A sweet bundle of joy can make even the worst week somehow better, can't they? Congrats to you all!

:lmao:...R U for hire??? I have a little boy's room that still needs to be painted!;)

Augh, I really do hate painting. This was my first time spraying furniture. I primed it with 2 coats of Kilz - just using a brush - but really wanted a brushless finish that a sprayer will give. So, a friend loaned me theirs and my dad helped me do it. Lot of work, but they look perfect!

Good Morning All! I finally read back and am happy to see that our Vickie has one more clan member :goodvibes Love those new baby feelings! Hoping that the Boy's poor sore eyes clear up, that is the worst place, I think to be sore and itchy

Maria- your poor Mom! That bug has been traveling in our area and it is nasty

Sheryl- You must be so proud of your niece!

Kat- I cannot imagine vertigo as often as you are experiencing it, you cannot even function when you are constantly off kilter. Please let me know how the braised pork is, I saw that episode this morning and it looked so good!

Janice- I am glad to know I am not the only one who is lost in the underwear department :rotfl2:. It was not so hard before, I was mad at my weight so I didn't care so much...but now I want some pretty undies. So I went to Kohls and bought some new bras and panties, thought they were pretty. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bras were :scared1::eek::scared1: when I put them on, this 52 YO gal cannot wear a bra filled with some kind of "stuff" ( at this point in my life I am trying to get rid of extra padding, not add it on) and those pretty panties were really thongs. I have enough issues with pants moving around and ending up in places where pants are not supposed to lodge without placing something there on purpose! Not to mention Marisa's face when I pulled out my new things :lmao: "Mom!!!!!!!!!!!! Thongs????????????????????" And then she called the boys! I am still hearing about that!

Bethany- I saw that Annabelle was able to come home :goodvibes

I am home alone today, Welby has Nola's bug too so they are not coming here. I am feeling better today, I started a Z-Pak yesterday. This has knocked my sox off! I told Buddy that I am paying for all of those big exuberant sloppy kisses that baby gives me but they are so worth it! Her Mom is trying to teach her to temper that excitement when she is with the dogs, her Tonka is a huge beast who stays by her side whenever she is loose. She starts out trying to pet her and gets so excited that the poor thing is a cross between a trampoline and a punching bag. Mom shows her how to pet and "be nice' that lasts for all of one nanosecond before she giggles and climbs on that big babysitter!

Dinner has been whatever we have in the fridge. I am planning to do something with pork cops tonight, we'll see later.

Good Morning!

Quick fly by...I hope to be back later...

Vickie, Nice to see you! Congrats to you and your cousin on her having a baby! I hope the Boy gets better soon...my sister has eczema and when she breaks out, its bad. She mostly gets it on her hands. I meant to tell you some time ago, congrats to the Boy on the dance. Did he move into the other group?

Kat, glad you and Kyle are feeling better. Call you later.

Lauri, I am sorry that you are having a rough time at work...Hopefully as the days go on, your body adjusts and you start feeling better.

Glynis, I hope Timothy is feeling better and all of you got some more sleep.

Janice, Way to go on fixing the leak! That stew looks great! Oh boy! I do love Tyler!

Maria, I hope Mom is feeling better. I am sorry you missed Billy Elliot. It was great talking to you the other day!

Aimee, did you take before and after pics? I would love to see what you have done. I hate painting too!

Ann, I think WDW would be a much better trip than Williamsburg! ;)

I know I missed some stuff...I will BBL...

Dinner is Glynis' roast in the crock, potatoes, carrots and red cabbage. Easy since I have to go pick up Mom today.

Not to mention Marisa's face when I pulled out my new things :lmao: "Mom!!!!!!!!!!!! Thongs????????????????????" And then she called the boys! I am still hearing about that!

:lmao:

The braised pork was just OK, not one I'd do again.

WFD - Roast beef po-boys and sweet potato fries! bbl......

SO I miss a day and have tons to catch up on.

Nancy - glad you are feeling better. Your post had me in stitches. I hear ya on the padding. And thongs!!

Kathy - gald you and Kyle are also feeling better. I know I've seen the Iron Chef sauces somewhere because DH pointed them out. When I remember, or when I see them again, I'll let you know. And now that I know they are good, I'll try them!! How disapointing that the braised pork was just okay. I had printed out the recipes after the show, but haven't tried them yet.

Maria - How disappointing that you didn't get to see Billy Elliot. I'm hope you DM is better.

Lauren - hope this week goes well with your Mom.

Lauri - sorry you are in pain. I hope it you find some relief soon.

Glynis - Poor Timothy. It amazes me how cutting teeth can make some kids so miserable and sick.

Janice - You do the "handymam" stuff really well! Always fixing this and redoing that. I'm impressed. That stew looks good. I've done a few of Tyler's recipes, but for some reason they seem like a lot of work to me. But I'll try this one - I love stew. Besides, I'm always up for a trip to World Market. :rotfl:

Vickie - congrats on the new baby! Sorry your boy is suffering. Hope it gets better before you leave for vacation.

Bob and I try to plan out some of the weeks meals on the weekend. He gets home before I do, so, he’ll either cook, or at least get started on dinner. So we talked about what we had in the house, he pulled out some cookbooks and we discussed recipes, but we never decided on any menus. So I have no idea at this point what’s for dinner.

Morning everyone!! It is SO a monday here at the Church. You all should have seen my desk this morning when I got here. :scared1: You couldn't even see the top:eek: I am just now starting to see some headway.

I will try to catch up later. But until I do my thoughts and prayers and YeeHaws are with you all.

Dinner tonight is going to be the Scallop recipe that was posted a few weeks back. I can't remember who posted it, but I was in Lincoln and found some Scallops - I was so excited  I have no idea the sides yet, but probably something green. and I have my bread machine set to make a loaf of wheat bread. I will let you know how it all turns out.

Oh and Maria - the cake was WONDERFUL and a big hit with the family. Thanks!!!

Aimee, did you take before and after pics? I would love to see what you have done. I hate painting too!

You know... I don't know that I ever snapped a before pic :confused3 but I will def post an after!

My momma flies in about 2 hours from now and I'll see her later tonight. I really had hoped to make a nice dinner for her at least one night and it doesn't look like it'll happen! She has plans on the nights I have plans. Darn.

Tonight we're having goat cheese salmon, asparagus, and garlic mashed potatoes. I have some fresh from a local farm goat cheese with chive I want to use.

Hi Everyone! I am just popping on quickly to let you know we had a great time at the U2 concert. Getting out of the stadium was bad, though, and we didn't get back to the house until almost 2 AM. I had to get up to get the kids to school, so I am pretty groggy. We are going to the concert again tonight. Maybe I should have some more caffeine.

Vickie -- Can you get medicated Aquaphor there? Liam gets eczema sometimes, and that clears it up pretty quickly.

Glynis -- I hope Timothy starts sleeping again now that those teeth have come through. Poor kid.

Maria -- I'm sorry you missed the show, and I hope your mom feels better.

Kathy -- I don't think that recipe would be sweet. I think all the juice and sugar would make it sticky. Does Kyle have another tryout this week? If so, good luck to him!

Nancy -- I'm glad you're feeling better.

Lauren -- Good luck getting everything together for Tom's move. Will he be coming home on weekends until you and Andrew can move?

Aimee -- I'm glad you were able to extend the trip. It is amazing how moving dates one day earlier or later can save so much on airfare.

Sheryl -- I'm glad you had fun at your niece's show.

Gretchen -- I hope everyone in your family is on the mend.

Okay, my mind is mush, and that is all I can remember. I hope everyone else is well, and I'll see you again tomorrow.

Ellen, so glad everyone like the cake, it's addicting:lovestruc

Laura, bet it was a great concert!

Lauren when are your Bruce tickets? We go the 30th.....

Vick, how's the "boy" today?

Mom, is feeling better, thank you everyone!

Wash & packing today, I'm off to Palm Beach tomorrow. My bff birthday is tomorrow plus this Aunty can't wait to see her pregnant belly & play with Liam:love:
