Sorry title is a bit odd!
We had a bad experience with US Airways in August, so I wrote and complained, and they have written back and offered us $150 each compensation towards another flight (can't be used online)
Anyway, I don't wish to appear ungrateful, but I'm not sure how it works with us being in the UK, and flying out to the US. I have looked at some flights, (they don't seem to have anything for the time we would be looking at next year (aug/sept) available yet); but looked at flights around the easter hols to NY, and they are coming up as indirect and up the 18hrs!
Does anyone know if this is because we would be flying the wrong way?
Do you think that as we booked through USAirways.co.uk, I could ask them to compensate us in sterling, or is that too cheeky?
Thanks,
Jules x

We received compensation in USD from Delta after a dreadful flight with Northwest last month. When we booked our next Delta flights online the other day we were able to apply that compensation against the GBP price of the tickets. If US Airways don't allow you to offset online call their ticket office to arrange it.

Indirect flights will show longer journey times than direct ones because they include the time on the ground between flights. This is not unproductive time because you are completing immigration and customs formalities so the second leg has none.

Thankyou. We flew indirect for the first time this year. We had a really bad time going out there, via Philly and were worried about the return journey, which was through Charlotte. Fortunately it all went to plan, so we would consider doing it again, just not through Philly!!:)
Oh, and the reason I mentioned the flight times to NY was because they seemed really long. I thought the direct flight time to NY was less than to Florida, but am I wrong?:confused3
We all have 'big' birthdays next year, so were thinking of going to NY, or doing something special
Thanks again,
Jules x

I would ask. We received compensation from Air France in euros and they changed this to GBP when asked.

what hub are they using for the journey? Charlotte or philly? You seem to be at the mercy of u.s. airways not using any of the new york airports for their ops and philly is so close. Shame you cant codeshare to a new york airport on another carrier(presuming they dont have this in place.) As a side thought have you looked into surface transport from philly airport to new york?

Would be interested to know what went wrong. We've flown with US Airways on every trip so far (and always via Philly) and have booked with them again for April.

Hi,
It really was just bad luck for us. We booked in online and printed out our boarding passes on the Saturday eve, but when we arrived at Gatwick the following morning were told we had been moved to a flight from Philly the following day. No explaination, and if we hadn't printed off our boarding cards (and I had our original confirmation email), we wouldn't have had any proof!
The girl eventually came back and said we had been put on an earlier connecting flight, which would've been ok, only our flight from Gatwick was delayed. We were told that we would be met at Philly and taken through immigration so we could get the flight, but no-one was there,so we missed the flight. DH then heard his name being mentioned, and went over, only to be given a $100 meal voucher, and told to go to the main desk to arrange a hotel, as we wouldn't be flying untill 4pm the next day! They wouldn't discuss it and said we had to go to the main desk. Immigration then took about an hour and a quarter, and after walking through with our luggage,we had 2 doors in front of us. The door out to the airport, or the door through to connecting flights. I still had our original boarding cards for the flight we had actually booked, so said to DH if we went out to the airport we wouldn't get back untill the next day, and we didn't want to spend another day travelling, so we took the doorway to the connecting flights.
I tried to explain it to the girl at the desk, and she just told us to go for it, so we did!
That flight was also delayed, we again tried to explain what had happened, but no-one wanted to listen, and all the staff we spoke to were really rude. Eventually after being stopped from boarding, we were allowed on, but had to sit separately.
Now I realise there was an almighty mix up, but after that experience, we never want to see Philadelphia airport again!! Also, that particular flight from Philly is delayed something like 52% of the time, so probably isn't a good flight to go for when you have already been travelling for nearly 24hrs(as we had).
Oh, and our return journey via Charlotte was virtually hitch free:)

Oh I see! Doesn't US Airways fly direct to NY then? It would explain the long flight time (doh!)As I said before, we never want to see the inside of Philly airport again, but never say never I suppose.
That would be quite interesting, to go by coach or train; see some of the country!
I was looking at travelling by train from NY to Orlando as I read it somewhere, but when I went into a travel agents, they said it wasn't recommended:confused3

Had a quick look and a company called SEPTA serve the airport on the R1 line to 30th street station then AMTRAK will get you to New York. Worth a look. Trawled the departures from PHL and nowt goes to any of the New York airports

Have you actually agreed to accept the $150 voucher as compensation yet?

If not, then I would go back to them and ask for the cash, not a voucher.

It sounds like you may end up either not using the voucher, or taking a flight/route you don't really want just for the sake of using it. Thereby giving a company that you were dissatisfied with more revenue!
