So What's Coming to the New Pleasure Island?

Between the money they are spending for upgrades at DCA and now the MK, I doubt there's much money left to retheme PI. Cheapest thing would be to reopen the successful venues like AC.

Soundstage has now had all electronics ripped out of it.

The destruction continues /cry

Hiya lugnut33 - I'm sure someone can explain it better than I, but the west coast Disney parks are operated and funded by different groups than the east coast. I've had it explained to me by folks in the know, but it gets a little jumbled on the way out of my lips (heh).

I too heard the tip on one of the Colonel's heading to HK. Maybe they'll make a wise decision to keep the other here, if they decide to reopen the Club. Feels like a pipe dream to me now, though. :guilty:

Anyone else excited for ConGaloosh? I'm certain for those not fortunate to attend that there will be photos and video from those going. :thumbsup2

I'm counting the days! I'm planning on taking lots of pictures and taping as much as possible, and I know other people are as well. (I'm just praying we don't get sick before then; Swine Flu is running rampant in our town right now!)

Well on 7/19/09 you said you had a "unique" rumor that had AC reopening in some form. Are you now able to elaborate on that more? My source is saying that it should reopen by January 1st.

I really wish I could, but it's pretty sensitive.
Just to reiterate though, something very well may have been planned, but as we all know plans do change. That doesn't make the info incorrect, it just makes it outdated.

very sad what has happened to PI. last week i walked through PI with a friend and all she could say was " what happened here". she is an orlando resident and was fairly shocked as to how barren it was. the only activity was a dj and a few cm's trying to get people, about 10 of them to do the chicken dance. as we left PI she said to me that if we want any nightlife i guess we have to go to citywalk.

hopefully something gets done here soon. it was sad to see what has happened here.

i told he there is some nightlife at Boardwalk but we agreed that it isnt the same as going to the clubs at PI

Well I've stumbled onto some information about the names of restaurants that may be coming to PI once the economy picks up and Landrys (and/or others) are ready to proceed. You can view my article at: www.savepleasureisland.blogspot.com

Just think....the Adventurers Club could be replaced with the Hot Dog Hall of Fame! Check it out; it appears that PI officials have bought into this.

Well, if they are reading - NO FRAKKIN WAY! I will NOT go to Pleasure Island for a hot dog, hall of fame or otherwise! If I want a historical hot dog, I'll go to downtown Boston and fine Joe&Nemos - at least that has a NAME related to Disney!

All those names strike me like its just a food court at a mall so unsuccessful they couldn't even get a mini-McDonalds to occupy the space and is just a bunch of no-name stations.

Edit: I went to the other web site, and I can see that its just a bunch of concepts, some in existence somewhere, some in process, and others perhaps only dreamed of so far, buy the guy who dreams up most of Landry's places...nothing particular to tie any in particular to PI other than that meeting in 2008 where Schussler was probably pitching grandiose ideas...

Exactly what I was thinking!
It's just sad. Disney used to be the best at everything they tried. I'm amazed they have fallen this far. :(

Same feelings I had when I saw River Country after it closed. And yes, before DD6, I went to PI a lot. Now we just drink/dance/listen to loud music/tell tales in our room. Wonder how that will fly? "Sorry, but since PI closed, you guys don't leave us with an after hours entertainment choice, so we have to amuse ourselves." :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::

I realize this is a bit off topic, but with our current economy Disney could be worse. I saw it today.

Visited Busch Gardens today - trust me, Disney is still best (although not like they once were - I know). Everyone else seems to be falling too.

I grew up 20 minutes outside DW - and pretty much grew up there, with an occasional visit to the other theme parks.

Let me say at least Disney's tram operators have teeth, they mulch & weed their gardens, pick up the garbage, and the CMs have a pleasant attitude. What I experienced at Busch Gardens today was astonishing compared to just a few years ago. :scared1:

From what I understand, the hard truth is that Adventurer's Club is gone for good. Bob Iger even stated that it is not coming back. It will be a restaurant at Hong Kong Disneyland. The only possible chance of it coming back seems to be if the Mystic Point area is cloned at WDW (like at AK). I've heard that there are some exciting ideas that imagineers are working on for PI (restaurants and merch.). Someone on another site thought that they should bring the Marvel Cafe idea that was supposed to go at Universal to PI. This could be cool, especially if it has show elements.:hippie:

My only questions is that if they are not bringing it back why havent they taken the signage down yet? Even the bus maps still call it Pleasure Island (of course all of the Pleasure is gone).

I think it would be cool for them to do some new attractions with their newly aquired franchises.

It's interesting that US has to pay disney royalties on the Marvel stuff now and that there are special provisions in the contract that US cannot even shutdown for a hurricane. If those parks at IOA shut down for a day Disney has the right to call in all of their rights with the Marvel stuff.

And family friendly too.
:lmao: :rotfl:
They have made such a great impact thus far. :rotfl2:

Ugh... so frustrating that it just sits their vacant with no signs of life. :(.... I don't want more boring restaraunts... Wither the clubs!

Can you please tell us the source of this info?

I'm assuming the poster is referring to Iger's comments at the last shareholder meeting, after some faboi gave a speech-like question calling the AC "the common man's Club 33." (Since said fanboi will probably read this, aplogies to you, but it really was over the top...) If you search the board or Google it, can probably find the exact quote, but it was no more than a sentence or two, but to the effect of "it ain't comin' back."

My only questions is that if they are not bringing it back why havent they taken the signage down yet? Even the bus maps still call it Pleasure Island (of course all of the Pleasure is gone).

Speculation, but at least one CM in the know has hinted I may be right: if Disney drops the name "Pleasure Island," it would be a change in circumstances sufficient to let their remaining tenants break their lease without penalty (or even sue). Raglan, Fuego and Curl have spent a lot of money marketing themselves as "on Pleasure Island," not "at Downtown Disney." Plus they probably want to avoid abandoning the copyright, although I confess I know very little about intellectual property law.

At the risk of going completely off-topic (a Rumors & News Board tradition), can I ask what the source of that information is? Not to doubt you, but that doesn't sound like a reasonable interpretation of the Marvel-Universal contract. Granted, none of us have actually seen the contract (I assume), so we are just going by what has been said or reported.

What I had read was Universal had the rights so long as the rides remained in operation (again, that's almost certainly not the actual contract "language"). That doesn't mean when the park closes for the night or if it doesn't open tomorrow (for whatever reason) the character rights lapse; It means once Universal formally closes down the Spider-Man ride for good, then they lose the license. You can't run an attraction like that without periodic closures for maintenance anyway.

Again, I know no more - and probably less - about the subject than you, but that just sounded like the sort of misinterpretation I wouldn't be surprised to see on some Disney discussion boards (not here!), hence I hope you'll understand my asking for the source. It would be interesting indeed if such a provision were anywhere near accurate. One thing I certainly can foresee is the potential for legal 'confrontations' between Disney and Universal; For instance, a routine closure for refurbishment is apparently permitted, but how long can the attraction(s) be closed before Disney could then argue that it instead constitutes a shutdown of the attraction, and therefore the loss of any rights to use that character?

Regarding Iger and the Adventurers Club, enough time has now passed that it is more than likely that plans for the future of the island have changed, perhaps several times, since the closure announcement. Clearly Disney wasn't able to just rent the spaces out like an ordinary strip-mall shopping center. Whether the club reopens eventually or never, I think it is quite possible that there were plans, now or at some point, for a possible return of the Adventurers Club. Even if a reopening date were confirmed today, plans still could change (when was the last time you visited the Spanish or Israeli pavilions in World Showcase...).

I highly doubt that anyone could make someone stay open during a Hurricane. You force a park to stay open and someone gets killed there goes major problems for Disney. There is no way that would ever happen.

As far as Disney having some kind of control over Universal itself, I don't buy that either. Universal owned itself and paid Marvel to put trademark names on and themes in their attractions. At no point did Marvel buy Universal or IOA. That is the only way Disney would be able to control something like operating hours or the park being shut down.

As with the above poster who's quote I have, Disney will get paid for those trademarks for now on and once a ride shuts down (for good) the Marvel name will be gone from that attraction. My guess is Universal will milk the Marvel name as long as they can but Disney can probably raise the price on the trademarks eventually.
