Two Sisters finally get to go to WDW together! - TR has started!

....am a bit nervous about that with our stupid 27 October where we will try to get ADRs at the same time as everyone and their friends (I think that's the way you say it)...

that's how you say it...bravo-I have a friend who grow up in France and Morocco-so her first language is French and even though her first language is French-her English is perfect but she does have trouble sometimes with the "slang" too...(I only wish my French was 1/3 as good as her English...)

I am not interested, but I can endure it I love this-it is soo polite yet to the point... I will be using it the next time I get a chance...

I will give you my thoughts and opinions (since you asked) I like really good food/wine but am not a food snob, and I understand about wanting to eat "American" food or something exotic because its different to you...(reminds me of the time Eric and I took a trip to Italy-Venice, Tuscany, Florence-and when we were telling one of our friends about where ate they said "but that's all Italian food..."......um yes of course...I didn't travel to Italy to eat American food or Chinese food...

Tusker House breakfast and lunch/dinner-This is good-Boma's food is better but in the morning they have the characters-very cute...if you book a 8:00 breakfast you'll be in the park before the 9 rope drop...

Jiko-excellent, upscale but relaxed...very representational of AK

Flying Fish-I love this-upscale but whimsical decor...If I were going for fish I'd choose this over Narcoose's-but again that's my opinion...


Garden View Lounge-lovely tea lounge, very pretty, good tea

Artist Point-this is also upscale but feels the most casual to me of all the SD-like it-it represents cuisine from the Pacific Northwest-lots of Salmon (I prefer the Cal Grill and if you want something inside the Wilderness Lodge go to:

Whispering Canyon Cafe-yes you can find better BBQ-but if you want that American chuck wagon/cowboy/bbq feel this is a fun place to go...

Liberty Tree Tavern-Nice lunch menu, great "Colonial Decor"-I don't think dinner is as good...it used to be a lot of fun when there were characters-no more...dinner is a kind of "Thanksgiving Menu" but very starchy...lots of potatoes, mac & cheese-its ok...if they still had the characters it would up my dinner rating...as it is...I think its a great choice for lunch in MK

Plaza Restaurant-I love this-mostly sandwiches, salads & ice cream-you can see the Castle from some seats...it's supposed to be an American Art Noveau Ice Cream parlor...


50s Prime Time Cafe-hmm...a lot of people like this...I'm not as big a fan...I don't enjoy "Mom" correctly my table manners-the Food was ok...I don't know how this translate culturally-you may think its fun or just odd...I think Sci Fi is a more unique experience...

YUM! Good food choices! I'll be honest, there are quite a few I haven't tried from your list, but I think you should try Sci-Fi Dine In because it's such a fun and unique experience. We're trying The Plaza Restaurant for the first time in a few weeks (before MNSSHP) and I hear nothing but wonderful things about it. I know it's very small so I hear reservations book fairly quickly. Keep us posted!!

Sci-Fi is definitely on the list, I think it is a very high ++, I always thought about going there, but never made it, so I guess this trip we really need to make it there.

Was that me? Well, that depends. Was the woman VERY nice? Yes, then it was me!! But if she wasn't nice, then.....um, no, not me!!!

Another thing that might tarnish my image, I'm definitely not a real southerner............... I'm a native NYer!!! Actually, the Yankees outnumber the true southerners in metro Atlanta!

Yes, that's my point!!! I think our view on food is very similar. Our family enjoys eating a lot (which you can tell if you see my family, even though I am doing very well with Weight Watchers at the moment, I lost over 20 pounds since February ), but we aprreciate good quality. My parents are in their way even a bit snobbish, but not in the high cuisine way, my father for example loves pasta with garlic and olive oil - but buys hand-crafted pasta and expensive olive oil for it.

In a certain way I think it has a true concept to the buffet, the dishes go very well with each other and they are something truely unique.

Narcoossee's -Good quality "American" style seafood-basic but upscale...very pretty setting outside the GF in its own building...I think what appeals to us the most, is the setting. While I am not a fan of the GF, I think Narcoosee's looks very relaxed. Also the food sounds really nice, I investigated the non-seafood dishes and they sound very good to me!

California Grill-Love this...American Food-Regional-California Wine Country...upscale, great wine list & by glass, nice place to celebrate...if you time it right-you can see the fireworks...I did the fireworks experience twice there and really enjoyed it. But last time we were there for the sunset and that was wonderful, too. I loved the view before it was dark! For me it is the restaurant that has the most special atmosphere of all WDW restaurants. We had a great waiter there in 2008 named Gary and I am planning on requesting him again. He was serving in the Wine Room and I would love to be seated there again.

that's our plan! Besides the cherry coke for K, I doubt she would enjoy that, might be a bit too ethnic for us! I read a review where someon got a dairy free milk shake made with "rice dream" an ice cream made with rice milk...

Tusker House breakfast and lunch/dinner-This is good-Boma's food is better but in the morning they have the characters-very cute...if you book a 8:00 breakfast you'll be in the park before the 9 rope drop... That seems to be the trend: resort restaurants are better than in park restaurants. K has picked that as her charcter breakfast and I really would love to go there, too! But our plan is AK EMH and then a late breakfast there!

I love the 50'S decor The 50's are really an era where I think that cultural differences between Europe and the USA were much greater. While in the US this was a time of wide spread prosperity, Europe was still recovering from the results of WW II. Of course the Marshall Plan helped a lot and Germany's economic boom started, but e.g. TVs were not at all wide spread in German households in the 50s. The first TV channel did not start until 1952. Courtesy of Wikipedia: TV consumers in 1952 in the USA: 15 million, in Germany: 300 But I am not a fan of the food that is served there and K is not a fan of being a center of attention....

Boatwright's-haven't been here... They have some southern menu choices that sound intersting to us and it would make a nice outing exploring POFQ and POR and then take the boat to DTD after dinner...

We have checked out the DISabilities board here and they have loads of info on dietary requests. It really is wonderful how accomodating Disney is in that regard! It seems that you can call a number and they will then email you forms that you can fill out with what you can and can't eat and list all your ADRs and then they will notify the restaurants in advance. Selecting our restaurants we already made sure that K found something on the menu which she would like to eat and which sounded like it could easily be modified, i.e. substitute mashed potatoes with roasted potatoes...

I think it is wonderful that you are hosting an exchange student! Katharina and I both work as volunteers for an exchange organization here in Germany and we had several exchange students in our family! Katharina was an exchange student in Czechoslovakia and I was an exchange student in Denmark - many years ago! We found exchange to be an exciting experience! You are really offering him a very special experience with Christmas in WDW! I hope you have a fantastic time there! Are you planning on doing a PTR for that trip??

Narcoossees -is a pretty restaurant and you are right -it does feel more relaxed than the rest of the GF-you really couldn't find a lovelier setting...

Biergarten...the one reason I would selfishly want you to go here is to find out from someone who is actually German how "authentic" this actually is...but I can understand you not wanting to spend a precious ADR on it...

The Wave-the Wave has been garnering good reviews and I really had not complaints about their food...IMHO-I don't think they emphasize their supposed interest in fresh, organic, local ingredients as much as they could (I actually read more about it on line-than anything I heard or saw when we were there)...and I do agree their decor was a little blah...

(I was actually really disappointed in those parts...I'm a big fan of Alice Waters and the whole local food/organic movement...Disney due to the amount of people that come + read about them...could really have an impact on that if they chose...) Do you have the Slow Food Movement in Germany (I believe it started in Italy?)-I love that your Dad buys handcrafted pasta and good olive oil...Good Food doesn't have to be "fancy food"-it just had to be well made of good ingredients...)

Glad to hear you're doing the GV tea; my sister and I did it in '06 and it was a lovely experience! Definitely go to WCC and SFDI! They are both worth it for the atmosphere.

I'm going to give you my opinion of the places on the lis we've been! Perhaps it may help you a little! We definitely aren't foodies but enjoy a good meal! I will tell you that 3 of the best meals I've had in my life I had at WDW!!

Artist Point - DH and I ate hear in March on our anniversary trip! It was good! The setting is beautiful, the service was excellent. They serve a lot more "game" type meats, venison, buffalo, which is interesting! DH had Buffalo and absolutely loved it!! He said it was like a really lean piece of roast beef! I believe (but could be wrong) that I had pork chops which were very good but they came with purple potato puree which was absolutely yummy!!! I was a little taken back by the color but YUMMY!! We would likely eat here again!

Boma dinner We ate there in 2005, so kind of a long time ago! But it was very good and different from most of the other WDW buffets that serve the same food over and over again!

California Grill This was an absolutely excellent meal for me!! Dh and I both had the Hearts of Romaine appeitizer which was very good! For dinner I ordered Filet of Beef which came with mashed potatoes and brocollini. Sooooo, sooo good!! All of it was delicious!! Not one complaint about it at all! The meat was perfectly cooked and so tender. The mashed potatoes were yummy and the brocollini was to die for, I was actually tempted to ask for more of the brocolini!! Yummy, yummy and more yummy! DH had the Stripped Bass for his dinner, he was a little disappointed by it because he thought it was frozen, not fresh. Where we live we get fresh, wonderful fish in abundance and DH just won't tolerate less! The setting is unmatched and if you can get a seating during Wishes then OMG!!

Narcoossee's My favorite meal of all time was at Narcoossee's in March!! Your right, the setting is a little more relaxed then the rest of GF (we stay at GF in 08) It's a beautiful spot!! The service is OUTSTANDING!! DH and both got the crabcakes for an appeitizer, yummy!!!! They were overly fried and weren't fishy! They were soft, yet crunchy on the outside. The sauce that accompanies them is wonderful!! It doesn't over power the cakes but adds a great little extra flavor! We both had lobster for dinner which was the brst lobster I've ever had!! Like I said before we live in a area where we have an abundance kof fresh seafood and we love lobster. This was to die for!! They steam it in a kind of steam closet which I thought was very neat! It was soooo tender, juicy and flavorful!!

Whispering Canyon Cafe I know WCC gets kinda a bad rap but I don't have any issues with it!! A wise Diser (PracPerfPatricia) once said something to the effect of "some restaurants are more about the experience..." This is one of those places! It's just a lot of fun!! It may not be the best meal ever or the best meal on property but it's good and FUN!! Just make sure they don't seat you in the little room in the back were they seem to seat all the people who are grown ups only!

Kona CafeWe've had breakfast and lunch at Kona! You can't beat breakfast at Kona!! YUMMY!!! Lunch was good too but not as good as breakfast

Liberty Tree Tavern We ate here on Halloween 06. It was OK but not great! Back then they still had characters and they dressed in halloween costumes, so it was cool experience. Not sure I'd eat here again with out characters!

I have only been to one restaurant on your combined +++ list. That's California Grill. I ate there back in 06- timed perfectly for Wishes- at a table by the window. And I adored absolutely everything about it. The food was amazing, service great, wine yummy. I can't wait to eat there again in just a few weeks!

I can't wait to hear which of your other +++ and ++ choices you get. You are right about there being way more choices and "wants" than available meals. But it is always good to have a reason to go back!

Kona Cafe -- Marc & I both LOVED our dinners here. We had one of the best waitresses and it was such great food. So good that I'm planning on eating there for lunch solo in January. It's seriously yummy!

Liberty Tree Tavern -- I am a sucker for LTT. I just love the colonial feel. I went last year when there were still characters BUT I would eat there without them. Dinner was so yummy, just very basic American food but really yummy!

I've never eaten at Narcoosee's, but I love Boma and California Grill. Boma is always my must do restaurant now on my trips. I love getting the chance to try things I normally wouldn't, and the atmosphere is just wonderful.

I loved California Grill my last trip. We got really lucky and somehow were given the best seat in the house, a corner table with a perfect few of the castle and the fireworks. It was the perfect end to our trip, and the filet was to delicious.

I've eaten at Biergarten and The Plaza and really liked both of them. The Plaza has fairly standard sandwiches and treats, but I love the turn of the century decor and it's a nice simpler choice for a sit down restaurant at the MK. I've had to miss it my last few trips, but this time I made my ADR for the first day so I won't miss it.

Biergarten is fun, and after the San Angel Inn restaurant, it's probably the restaurant with the most ambiance at Epcot. I can be a bit of a picky eater, and I can always find something I like there.

Nearly forgot, I've also eaten at 50's too. Love it there, but like a previous poster I might be afraid that some of the charm may be lost for you due to cultural differences. I've always had a lot of fun there. Again, it's one I had a hard time eliminating from my schedule this trip.

Thanks for the comments. It doesn't look like we will make it to Biergarten this time. But I am sure I will end up eating there one day! The Wave will not make it on the list either from what it looks like at the moment...

We have the slow food movement here in Germany, but it is not extremely prominent. But Germany has a very long tradition of an ecological movement. The German green party has been represented in our parliament since the early 80's and has been in a coalition (as the minor part) to form our government from 1998 to 2005. So you see, environmental awareness in general is rather strong in Germany. And this applies to food as well.

I'm going to give you my opinion of the places on the lis we've been! Perhaps it may help you a little! We definitely aren't foodies but enjoy a good meal! I will tell you that 3 of the best meals I've had in my life I had at WDW!!

It seems like you really enjoyed the signature meals, you write about them with so much enthusiasm!! The ones I have visited so far have never dissappointed and I love it how they all offer a special atmosphere combined with wonderful food!

And thank you very much for your opinion on WCC! I am a bit scared about that one as so many people see to find the food "inedible". I am always amazed by these reviews and wonder wether it really was so bad that you would not eat anything of the meal?? To be honest, that happened about five times in my lifetime so far (once a "boiled" steak in South Africa ). I am not expecting gourmet food, but a fun place with avarage food, which will be special to us as foreigners!

I had to laugh at the title of your post!! Isn't that the beauty of WDW that it offers so much that two Disney fans can end up with totally opposite choices for restaurants? I guess part of it might be because what is exotic to me might be boring standard fare to you and the other way around: Katharina's point of view on the Rose and Crown was that she had original English pub food for 10 days this summer - why eat it again at WDW?

Kona Cafe really is a gem, I had many good experiences there. And it looks like it may make it on our final list!! LTT with characters would really have been fun, without them I am not so sure the food appeals enough to me at dinner time, but lunch was very nice there!

Biergarten is fun, and after the San Angel Inn restaurant, it's probably the restaurant with the most ambiance at Epcot. I can be a bit of a picky eater, and I can always find something I like there.

Nearly forgot, I've also eaten at 50's too. Love it there, but like a previous poster I might be afraid that some of the charm may be lost for you due to cultural differences. I've always had a lot of fun there. Again, it's one I had a hard time eliminating from my schedule this trip.

It's great to hear so much postive feedback on CG! Thanks for all the comments. Biergarten really looks lovely, a bit cheesy for me, but not too much. San Angel Inn could tempt me, too, but it regularly gets so bad reviews that I don't dare to eat there. And Mexican isn't really the best chice for someone who can't eat cheese and tomatoes...

And I will be looking forward to hear your opinion on the tea at Garden View and SciFi!!

Well, to be honest - it's only secondhand Disney mail... But that does not mean that it is any less appreciated!! When I complained about Disney not sending planning DVDs to Germany, Brookelizabeth kindly offered to order one for me and then send it on to me. When I got home from work today I had a largish envelope in my mail box with a green custom declaration sticker on it: my version of Disney mail. Thank you very much Brook!!

And even if all of you already know what a planning DVD looks like, I am excited that I got it and therefore - here are the pictures:

And the best thing is: the DVD appears to be without country code (Europe normally needs country code 2, while the US has country code 1), so I could watch it without problems. Got me all excited about our trip now!!

Also, there seems to be a rumor here on the DIS rumor board that something big is coming out on 9/27. A CM posted that all call center CM are requested to work on that day - he or she thought that might mean the start of the 180 days window, but possibly it is a new promotion since the ongoing free dining promotion is going to end on 9/26. Katharina and I will be in Nuremberg on that day, helping my parents with their move, so I am really glad that I have a travel agent in case they already start the promotions for 2010 on that day!! And we will have to try to come up with a first set of ADRs before then, too, I guess.

Possibly nothing will happen on the 27th... I remember that at the beginning of August the DIS Unplugged podcast had talked about some new deal being released and there was a thread of people being glued to their computer for the whole day waiting for this deal and then nothing happened... The DIS is really a very friendly and helpful community! I am trying not to get too excited about 9/27, possibly it is just a new deal for the end of this year and nothing for 2010 yet!

I am thinking of taking a few more pictures of Nuremberg in order to do the promised update on Nuremberg after that weekend...

Computer problems have kept me off the DISboards most of this year. Just started posting a short while ago. Of course, I've been reading your PTR.

You and Katharina made an excellent choice for your resort.

Good luck with selecting just the right restaurants. My DH and I ate at Narcoossee's for the first time last December. I enjoyed it so much (the food and atmosphere) that I made ADRs for my DD and I for this December.
