The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Aimee - Sorry it's the wisdom teeth and such a hefty $.

Laura - We need a pic of Caili and her new "do"!

Sorry lassies,another quick fly by...

I will read back and post tomorrow.

Ive posted some pic's on FB of the boys birthday if youse wannae peek.

Oh and speakin of The Boy...I had to ground him today, first time ever !!

I think he got a new bad attitude free with his xbox...

He spent the night in his room, and it sucked ...I MISSED HIM !!

But I stood strong.:rotfl2:

Have a good evening lassies,

Take care of you and yours...x

I never did get the grocery shopping done yesterday, so I'll have to do that today.

How does a city girl know what raccoon tracks look like?? You realize it could also be a nutria or possum! Be careful, he was probably running from the alligators!!;)

We went to Rouses tonight. We got some cheese, among other things. Get this: my DH went through and made out like a menu for the week, then a corresponding grocery list! So, we are going through the store and I'm in charge of holding the list and checking off items. I see Oreos on sale and he says "but that's not on the list!" And I replied "Oh, but it is! You see, I took the initiative and added it!"

I don't. :lmao: The person I was with said raccoon. :rotfl: She lives out past you somewhere. Although, checking Google it could have been those other two...If they're still there tomorrow I'll take a picture.

Bethany, seems like you are settling right in as a NOLA girl. Good luck with the school year.

Thanks everyone for the advice regarding our trip. I am really torn. Emma goes for her two month appointment on Friday and I have a huge list of questions. I will see what the Dr. advises. I have not mentioned our trip to my parents yet because I know they will freak at the thought of the kids going with the flu around. I am leaning toward cancelling to be honest no matter what the Dr. says. My DH is heartbroken because he really wants to take DS, and is dying to take the minivan on a roadtrip now. He said he would cancel asap if the Dr. advises against it, but you could see in his eyes it was like taking candy away from a baby. DH was also excited because he upgraded from Pop to POFQ :lmao:, so we are no longer POPpers ...he was starting to teach DS french terms. DH was also trying to workout changing our dates so I could join you girls for F&W but that did not work out. :headache:

I THINK so...and thanks.

:rotfl2: About the French terms. What kind of words, anyways? Now I'm curious. You have a lot to think about, but I agree with the others. One of the reasons I heard that they are not closing schools for swine flu this year like they did last year is that they found that the kids were still SOMEWHERE. If not in school, they were still out getting exposed to germs either in the store, park, pharmacy, etc... At least you are traveling in your own car, er....BRAND NEW MINI-VAN!!, not a plane.

Yes it was scheduled for Thursday but I just got a call and it has been pushed back to Friday at 2:00. I can't believe it's finally happening.

 on the memorial/celebration service and :woohoo: on the house!

Been to the dentist - the verdict is...... wisdom teeth. I knew some of my teeth were breaking and it was them. Now they are gross and causing me mucho pain.

Of course they found a laundry list of things I need to have done but I'm only interested in what will get rid of this pain the soonest.

I have an appt next Thurs. Now I have to figure out where to find the $1k it'll take to pay for it :rolleyes1

Ouch! I hope you get it fixed and get pain relief.

So last night I was reading the NYC news online and they said that they think there may have been around 800,000 (10% of the city population) undiagnosed swine flu cases. That was around the same time I got really sick and had to go to the ER in late May.

We're both OK, thanks for asking.:grouphug: Shelly has decided to have a "celebration" of Peter's life instead of a memorial service. I'm not quite sure what this means as I've never been to anything like this before. Anyone have any experience with this?:confused3
.

I can't wait until it happens! Friday has been a long in coming and I am thrilled for you!

I have never heard Celebration of Life, but I am Irish and as a kid we attended a lot of funerals. My Dad's family starting celebrating as soon as they started gathering at the funeral home and it lasted the entire three days. As much as there was a lot of sadness they all tended to tell stories about whoever had passed on and I must say that there was a lot of laughing (and after each wake and the funeral a little tipping too :rolleyes1)

Maybe this is kind of what your SIL is looking for...joy for his life.

OUCH!

Caili got her first official haircut (yes, she has gone almost 8 years with no one cutting her hair except me and I am terrible at haircutting! Ask Becky! ;)) and then Caili had skating.

You know I want to see her picture!

Ive posted some pic's on FB of the boys birthday if youse wannae peek.

Oh and speakin of The Boy...I had to ground him today, first time ever !!

Need you ask us picture junkies if we want to see a few ????:goodvibes

You did good if you made it this long without a grounding :thumbsup2 Ask any of us who have girls....they can be mouthy!

Thanks for the compliments about my girl :goodvibes:goodvibes I am biased but I love her to bits!

Debbie is feeling badly but is pretty practical about it. She knew tht in this economy ther competition would be stiff, more coached out of work these days. She was told that the coach who took the job will be fine unless she does not shake this team up and get some wins, then she will be among the unemployed whose job prospects are tainted. I know she is right but I also know that she really does nto see it that way. She really was a good fit there.

Kat, we have attended two celebrations of life.

One was in Maryland & it was joyful music, sharing "happy" stories & more of a party atmosphere. It was for Greg's BF Mom.

The other was for my friends/coworkers 2 year old son. They had his favorite toys on the alter, gave everyone who attended one of his favorite Matchbox cars & had helium balloons displayed everywhere. After church they held a reception & had framed photos of the baby on all the tables & stuffed toys. The balloons were let go after the reception to "celebrate Brady's life"

Thanks to all for the input on the celebrations of life, I really appreciate it.:grouphug:

Bethany - I'm very proud of you & Edi, way to go!:thumbsup2

Vickie - First time grounded? He's a great kid!

My brother has decided/agreed to take Ace.

That's great.

I hope your day today is better! :wizard: Shrimp curry sounds yummy! Maybe I'll do something like that with shrimp & that squash.

Not much, unfortunately, but it goes with the territory. Why is it that if your voicemail says that you are not available to answer the phone or return calls that someone will leave one asking for a call back ASAP? Actually that should be LOTS of someones!:headache:

I did manage to get a lot done today though and ended up staying at work until 7:30 tonight because I wanted to get the approxiamately 80 voicemails (that was from yesterday and today) cleaned off of my phone. Now I just have to finish calling people back, luckily I was able to answer a good many of them.

Dinner ended up being crab bisque my DM made and toast, I was too tired to deal with cooking the curry. I was soooo hungry I ate it with toast made with white bread, I never eat white bread! My wheat bread had mold on it and I wanted toast.

I'll have the curry tomorrow night, now that I have relaxed for a little while I am going to get everything ready to go for the curry.

grilled eggplant parmesean, grilled garlic bruschetta. Haven't read back yet, bbl:

Aimee, that bites about the teeth. Hope you get relief soon.

Vickie, first time must have been hard....i agree with Kat you have a good kid there.

----------------
I celebrated yesterday, no more paying for Cobra ins. DH's new benefits kicked in. They are not the best but better than none. I was so spolied having his state employee coverage.

No cooking for me tonight. We are picking up the van after DH gets out of work. I will probably grab something at DM's, they are watching the kids while we get the car. DH will most likely grab fast food.

I am eating a peach scone I bought at our small local grocery...yummy! They make some tasty treats.

Need to burp Emma and get a refill on coffee...BBL

that looks great, right up my alley! My Italian DH would protest over the skin on the eggplant but I love it like that.

Rainy and stormy day here on the plains.

Sorry I was MIA for a bit, but we are so busy here at the Church. We are getting ready for our Annual Financial drive - so much to do. All of our Choirs including Bells, Bible Studies and youth groups all start tonight so it is a busy busy day. I love it!! But I miss being here more!!!!!!!!

I haven't had a chance to read back and I hope to later, but if not Love and hugs to you all. :flower3:

WFDT ~ Marinated Chicken, brown rice, fresh beets and bread and jelly.

Make it a great day my friends.

Aimee, I am sorry about your teeth. Hopefully you will feel better soon.

Vickie, if you have made it this far without grounding the boy, that is pretty impressive! Maybe he was just overexcited about the xbox.

Glynis, I hope your boy is better today.

WFD: swiss chard, carmelized onion, bacon, and mushroom quiche, and a tomato salad.

I'm looking for Kathy's coconut cake recipe, but I'm a dunce with the search function. Can any of you search gurus help me out in finding it? Thanks.

Morning Y'all,

It's a beautiful day here in Nola! Highs in the 80's & lower humidity, very strange for August, but I'm not complaining!

Been to the dentist - the verdict is...... wisdom teeth.

I'm sorry! We don't have dental ins. either & the cost is just crazy. Hopefully all the pain will go away along with the teeth!

 I do think Becky's John would object to being a Liam Woman. Like Beck said, the recipe was not difficult...we just split duties because we were trying to get dinner on the table. It is definitely something where you can make parts of it ahead.

It was a busy day for us...farmer's market, Caili got her first official haircut (yes, she has gone almost 8 years with no one cutting her hair except me and I am terrible at haircutting! Ask Becky! ;)) and then Caili had skating. I got protests from Liam about the burger meal, but our propane lasted, and they turned out well. We also had corn on the cob.

 Yeah I guess John would not appreciate that! Sorry John!;) In my defense when Becky said it took three of you, I assumed it was your Mom that helped.

Oh and speakin of The Boy...I had to ground him today, first time ever !!

I think he got a new bad attitude free with his xbox...

But I stood strong.:rotfl2:

His 1st grounding, ever??!! Wow he is a good boy! :thumbsup2 For standing strong Mom!

Boy Edison sure knows how to take the fun out of shopping!

I'm sure I couldn't actually tell you the difference between a coon, nutria or possum print either!

I hope you did have the swine flu last year. Then you would have some resistance to it, now that it's hitting down here.

Not much, unfortunately, but it goes with the territory.

I hope you get all of those call returned today! :wizard: I did make a shrimp & veggie curry last night. Thanks for the idea, it was yummy & I have leftovers for dinner tonight!

YUM!! That looks fantastic!:worship: A lot of cheesy goodness there!

I'm guessing you grilled the eggplant & then assembled the dish??

:yay: Yeah for no more Cobra! Have fun picking up your new van! :goodvibes

I'm happy you're enjoying your work!! Just don't wear yourself out!

Dinner will be last night's leftover shrimp curry. I might do some baking today.

I'm looking for Kathy's coconut cake recipe, but I'm a dunce with the search function. Can any of you search gurus help me out in finding it? Thanks.

I didn't have any luck finding it either.:confused3 I'll re-post it this afternoon if no one finds it!

Good morning! Typical Wed for me, work until about 9pm and grabbing dinner somewhere along the way. I have a lunch meeting so I might have leftovers I can nuke.

Here it is:

MOIST AND CREAMY COCONUT CAKE

1 pkg. yellow cake mix or pudding included cake mix
1 1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. sugar
2 c. coconut
3 1/2 c. or 1 container (8 oz.) Cool Whip

Prepare cake mix as directed on package baking in 13x9 pan. Cool 15 minutes then poke holes down through cake with utility fork.
Meanwhile combine milk, sugar and 1/2 cup coconut in pan. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer 1 minute. Carefully spoon over warm cake. Cool completely.

Fold 1/2 cup of the coconut into whipped topping and spread over cake. Sprinkle remaining. Chill overnight. Store in refrigerator.

Good afternoon all! I hope all the kiddos that are back to school are doing well and having fun. There is still almost a week of vacation left here.

Aimee- I'm sorry about your wisdom teeth. I'm not sure if your planning on being knocked out or not, but I had mine taked out with just novacaine and laughing gas (I can't remember what it's called). It wasn't the most pleasant experience of my life, but definatly doable without being out- maybe that could save some money. Either way, you'll be more comfortable before you know it.

Ann- Congratulations on the car and no more cobra! I remember when my husband switched jobs almost 9 years ago, we couldn't afford cobra- that was a scary time, I can't imagine if something had happened.

Kathy- I went to a celebration of life for our friend's mom, there was a lot of laughing and storytelling, but a lot of tears too. She knew she wasn't going to make it and it was her request to have the "celebration."

Bethany- I don't do racoons. They are my biggest fear. I'll do anything to avoid going outside in the dark, but even then I'm not safe. The racoons around here aren't all nocturnal, but tidal. They come out at low tide because it's easier for them to find food. While I think that's pretty neat, they still scare the bajeebers out of me.

I really though I had a lot more to say. I'm not sure what's for dinner, but I have to go to the store so I'll see what looks good. Enjoy the rest of the day.
