Photo Sharing: Ultra Wide Angle

Since the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 got its own club (which has since been expanded as other Sigma lenses have piggybacked off the success of the dirty thirty), it seems only right for the new "it" lens for WDW photographers to get its own thread.

So, let's see what you've accomplished with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, any other Ultra Wide Angle Lenses, or Fish-eye lenses.


Expanded to included all Ultra-Wide Angle Lenses. I don't know what constitutes a UWA "officially", but I'd say 10mm to 20mm is ultra wide on crop sensors. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong (which very well may be the case).

I'll get the ball rolling. If you're interested in EXIF, click the picture, which will take you to Flickr (EXIF can be found by clicking the "More Properties" link in the lower right hand corner). I "re-placed" my order to JandR since they are the cheapest for the Tokina w/cashback right now. However, like almost every other major store, they are on backorder. I'll let it sit there and see if it ever comes back in stock. If it does I'll take it to mean I was supposed to get it

I had one briefly before going to FX- I was a big fan while I had it. Who knows- maybe Tokina will make an equivalent full frame gem 16-24mm f2.8. Until then I'll add a shot I have with it I always liked.

That sounds like a good idea...I think the Tokina alone is a little more limiting (the Sigma is a huge-selling prime available in all manufacturer's mounts, so it was able to support a solo thread).

But if not, maybe we'll start another fan thread for the other UWAs...anything in the 10-15mm, or (15-23mm full frame), range.

I was under the impression that a lot of people have the Tokina here. I've revised the thread since I don't just want this to be a thread of my own pictures. The Tokina is still the leader of the group, but other lenses are welcome as well.

It's 10mm for me too...but then throw in the 1.5x sensor crop factor, and you got 15mm in 35mm-equivalence. I'd agree, wide should be defined as up to no more than about 24mm full frame, or 16mm crop.

Here's what I've got so far - I've only had a UWA for a few weeks, and it's far too hot and miserable to go out and shoot much with it lately...so I've only had a few excursions. Mine's a Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5:

OK, I'm not much of a wide angle guy, but the Tokina as the premier? I don't think I've ever seen a lens dominate it's segment like the Nikon 14-24mm does. Canon guys are buying adapters just to use it. There is no contest here. If you want to claim that the Tokina is the premier APS-C UWA, feel free. If you want to claim that it is the best "value" in an UWA (since it is about 1/3 the price of the Nikon), go for it. To claim that it is the premier UWA, even if you restrict the selection to zooms, is just wrong.

The Siggy 30 sort of deserves its own thread because it is available and unique in every system and a really great value. The Tokina has seen an increase in discussion recently here, but there are lots of ultra wides out there, both zooms and primes, and the Tokina is C/N only. (I'd be willing to bet there are more Sigma 10-20 owners here, but that's beside the point) Premier UWA? Hmm.. have to agree with Mark, the Nikon 14-24 is the only legend. We don't need to play favorites in the Cult of UWA

I suppose I should have qualified it as the most economical or cost-effective UWA. I've never used the 14-24, probably because its cost would require me to pawn all of my possessions just to lay a hand on it. I'm not that big into photography to drop that amount on glass. Yet. Besides, isn't it good practice to blindly and arbitrarily advocate whatever you have as the best?

NOT TRUE! By almost any measure, most folks would consider 24mm and under to be ultra-wide in 35mm equivalence. So if you've got shots with your 11-22 lens shot at 11 or 12mm, they should still be in range!

Here's a few shots I took with the Olympus 11-22mm f/2.8-3.5, it's definitely UWA @ 11mm, if only just. It was my favorite lens while I was a 4/3rds user.

Oly shooters aren't left out, but there aren't any third party options that go SUPER wide. The Oly 7-14mm f/4 is superb (with a price to match). I haven't had any experience with the 9-18mm f/4-5.6 as it came out right as I sold my E-510.
