Am I totally missing something???

So, being that I am on vacation and have a bit of extra time on my hands, I started thinking about AP room discounts and other general offers. DH has said no to the 4/3 IF it comes out for this spring as we have a room at Vero Beach and he wants to go to the ocean (plus we did the 4/3 deal last year).

So, I have AAA room-only booked now and riding out the wait for a deal time.

I was looking at the AP deal that came out for rooms through 2009 with the average savings of 40% for Moderate and Deluxe rooms.

Then I did some math
one AP (no hopper) $520
one 3 day ticket (no hoper, with expiration) $233
40% off moderate stay savings (4 nights Mar 12-16) $400 (CSR)
SAVING $120

40% off deluxe stay savings (4 nights March 12-16) $832 (AKL)
SAVING $545

Can I really do that and with just one person (me) in the party having an annual pass or am I totally on another planet? It seems a bit silly to get one for just the few days, but if I can really get the savings it would be worth it, right? :confused3

Yeah it would be worth it but if an offer comes out for those dates it usually makes more sense because you can save so much on the ticket cost. I think you can reserve a room with an AP discount before you actually have an AP, you just have to get one before you check in. So maybe do that and if something better comes along you can cancel your AP rate room and rebook without worrying about having already spent 500+ on an AP.

You're not crazy. Often the math works out that one AP pays for itself (and saves) with a large enough room discount -- on more expensive rooms. But you have to be flexible with what rooms are available, and it has to work out versus other deals. AP rooms have been plentiful lately -- but when the economy picks up, there will be fewer allocated.

There are many websites with discussions (mousesavers, allears) of the "break even" point for AP.

Good luck with your planning!

Thanks! And thanks for the info on being able to book and then get the AP... I know DH will think I have gone off the deep end when/if I suggest we get one, not to mention it does all depend on the deals offered for AP and the general public.

Thanks for letting me know I have not had too much time on my hands! I will have to check out the discussions, good thing we have lots more vacation time coming up! Not to mention that both my kids start school soon ;)
