OT would you use a pink carseat for a boy baby?

Just wanted to get some opinions here...we are having baby #4 in Oct. The infant carseat I have is a pink pattern. DH doesn't really want to use a pink carseat for his DS, and originally I didn't want to either.

However, after calling Graco and asking how much a new cover would be (it's around $60 +Shipping). I also checked ebay and no luck in finding covers. I just think it's a waste of $$$.

I plan on using a JJ Cole Bundle Me so only a little bit of the carseat will be visible anyway. Plus anywhere we go, people will most likely see we have 2 DD's and understand where the pink is from.

Plus, I would rather save the $$ to put into a toddler seat for new baby when he is big enough.

I guess I am just trying to save a little $$ so we can finally get back to Disney next year after 3 long years!

What would you do? Thanks!

LOL i can laugh cuz im in the same boat.. well the other side really
i had a little boy in 2003 i saved everything. high chair. car seat. strollers. etc..
in 2009 i had a little girl my sweet princess..
shes got really dark hair. i bought her the pink car seat.. but the stroller. people see the blue stroller and call her a little boy! it drives me nuts!

i got lucky the stroller is huge.. and too big for my car so i had replaced it with a pink one so it solves that problem..

but with the high chair and play pen etc.. who cares!!

I'd use the pink carseat...and I have 4 boys! In fact I got a swing when the first one was born and it was pretty girlish print. I didn't care and neither did the kids.

Congrats on your son!! I agree with you....use the pink...it will be winter and he will be covered and will probably grow out of it by the time the pink will show.

Don't forget to check the date on the back to ensure the plastic hasn't expired! I learned this tip on the Dis!

You never know, you may find a neutral/boy color on clearance somewhere!

Of course! Why not? The baby won't care. And I certainly wouldn't. Yes, some people might think the baby is a girl - so what? Won't make any difference to the baby.

All of my kids except ds6 had no hair their first year - however, he had long, bouncy curls. Since you can't tell if a baby is a boy or a girl, I'd put bows in his, and dress him like a girl, and his twin sister as a boy!

You could also check craigslist for a cover or a used carseat the same as yours but only use the cover from it.

There's no way I'd spend so much money on something new for cosmetic purposes only when the item already owned is perfectly safe and serviceable.

That being said, if it bothers your DH, ask around and see if any friends or family are handy with a sewing machine and could whip up a quick cover.

I hae three girls and I honestly have to say if I was to have a boy I wouldn't. Everytime you go to the store, someone is going to compliment you on your baby girl and then you are going then you are going to have to tell them it's a boy and then you're going to get that look like you are crazy because how could they be wrong you have him in a pink car seat - way too much conversation with strangers

did you try ebay for a car seat cover? I am probably in the minority I wouldn't use it.. I did use the same blue car seat for my first 3 because they didn't have these pretty pink car seats until after my girls were born. I had to get a new one since that one expired before my 4th was born.. his is grey just in case!

Can you cover it with a thin blanket? I'd do it. My husband did not have a job when our son was born so he was in a pink snowsuit.

I did just buy a pink carseat for the 1yo I babysit. I wasn't going to pay $20 more for a blue pattern.

Save the money and use the pink one.

This is going to happen anyway. With my oldest boy-he would be dressed head to toe in blue and people would still come up and say "What a cute little girl".
You only use the infant seat for a year anyway. Save your money and if your Hubby is bothered by it just cover the pink up with a blanket.

If one of my boys was dressed in pink, and a stranger in a store said "what a cute little girl" I'd say "thank you!" and go on with what I was doing. Why worry about correcting them? It's not like the baby cares.

Here's another vote for just cover it with a blanket, a blue blanket of course. I understand the way you feel though. I was really careful to get all that sort of stuff in gender neutral colors so I could use for both of my kids no matter what sex they were. Of course I'm a cheapie from way back. I just hate spending extra if I don't have to, rather save it for better stuff.

Our infant carrier is light gray with some navy blue. Everywhere we took DD, people would say, "Your son is adorable. How old is he?" Even though she was dressed in pink, they'd just see the carseat and assume she was a boy. I'd politely say, "She's x months old." Some people say, "Oh, the carseat is blue so I assumed she was a boy" and I would explain that we plan to have more kids so we felt buying a gender neutral carseat was more practical so that we didn't have to buy another one down the road if we were to have a boy. Most people agreed and went on about their day. We still buy every big ticket item in gender neutral colors. I'm also the mom who buys her DD boys jackets because they tend to be warmer and I don't want to try to keep a frilly pink or white coat clean.

OP - I'd use the carseat you have. The bundle me cover will cover most of the color and if it really bothers DH that much, try to find a cover on ebay or craigslist. Save the $$ for the toddler carseat.

I would absolutely use the pink seat! He sure doesnt care and the people that matter know he's a boy. Think of all the diapers you can buy with that money.

(ps - what if you pay for a blue one and it's like my first son - continually dressed in blue, my favorite color - and CONSTANTLY called a girl. He was very 'pretty' as an infant. I didnt care at all really.....he's still a boy [ and QUITE a boy - football, basketball, karate, etc - that being called a girl thing didn't hurt him at all. ] But, do what makes you happy, ofcourse. )

pps - you could try bleaching it and then throwing it in some nice dark blue dye. It wont be 'perfect' - but I did it once for a jacket for my son and it turned out pretty well. They are in thsoe seats such a short time....

IF it really bothers you can you use some RIT dye to change the color? I would use it anyway. No matter what your child is wearing people ALWAYS seem to call them the other gender.

DD was head to toe pink, pink blanet over and pierced ears, still told I had such a cute little boy!

If it bothers your DH that much, I've seen some generic brand infant seat covers at Target for $20 or so. I've had 2 boys and my third due soon is a girl. I've pined wistfully for all the cute girly prints out now but am so glad that we kept all of our gear regardless of the colors. It's a HUGE money saver. Everything for babies is "cutsey" anyway so the colors hardly matter, the designs are usually pretty unisex.
