I Paid Someone $5 for a Catchy Trip Report Title, and This is All I Got-Updated 12/29

Love the resort pics. Love all the carvings on the bed. Nice and spacious.

Wow..the room looks great! :cloud9:

Such a lovely resort. Room looks fabulous. Not surprised you felt at home there.

nice pictures!!! Were you able to see the pool from your room? I know it sits kinda down low but didn't know if you were high enough up to see down to the pool? I loved seeing the pool!!!

I'm glad you like the pictures. We really loved the suite, and felt very much at home. We could see the fitness center from our balcony, but no, the pool was a little ways beyond that, and out of our view.

jordanyosh;32887556 This change must be the result of feedback from DVC owners that the master bathrooms didn't have a shower. Glad Disney listens to some of their most loyal guests! No magazines in the toilet area?;):rolleyes1[/QUOTE said:
The shower was really, really nice. It had a huge showerhead and it felt like you were standing under a waterfall. Very luxurious.

My reading material of choice is the "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader" series. I highly recommend it. I guess I should have left one.

All caught up now. Would love to see the pool pictures. I was not to impresed by the pool when we stayed a few years ago, but now it sounds great. Love the pictures everyone is having a great time.

:welcome: luckylady

The pool pictures are a couple of days away yet. I took them on a morning when it had rained quite heavily, so got pics with nobody other than the lifeguards standing around. The Jambo House pool (uzima pool, I think) is nice for cooling off, but doesn't offer a lot of "fun" things.

I see you're in NC....we lived there for a few years about a decade ago. southeastern NC.

We dressed for dinner and headed down to Sanaa. I don’t remember what time exactly, but I know we were a little early for our 7:05 pm ADR. I was really hoping that we’d love this restaurant because other than the pool bar and room service options, it is the only restaurant at Kidani. And I figured we would like it since our kids are pretty adventurous eaters for their age. We take them to Indian restaurants a couple of times a year, and they also like Korean food, as well as Chinese and Mexican, which is a lot more common than when I was a kid.

I took a picture of a wildebeest as we exited the elevator.

Here’s Judy checking us in.

img_0632.jpg

We got our buzzer and waited :bored:, and waited :yo-yo:, and waited some more :faint:. I can’t remember if I went back to the check-in counter once or twice, but I remember them telling me they had had a lot of parties of 5. They said something about running late and I said, “yeah, but a half an hour late?” Fortunately, a manager walked by about that point and overheard and made a little more effort to get us seated than the other CMs were. It was 7:40 when we were finally seated. On the way to our table the CM asked Judy if it was our first time eating there. She replied, “Yes, and it’ll probably be our last based upon how long it has taken us to be seated with a reservation.” The restaurant was definitely behind the 8-ball now, in trying to please us. I’m pretty forgiving, but Judy and the kids were not happy.

Here’s a shot of the seating area from our table along the back wall.

img_0634.jpg

We had a great server, Randall, who apologized profusely about the wait. He said the longest he remembered anyone having to wait for a table was about 15 minutes. At least we set a new record. I can’t remember if he saw in our reservation information that we had a food allergy in the group, or if he asked, but the Disney restaurants are usually really good about that. My oldest daughter is allergic to peas (I’ll bet a lot of you reading this wish you could have used that excuse with your parents), so he helped us with the menu, to be sure she avoided anything containing them. I think he even spent a little extra time with us because we ordered both our appetizers and entrees at the same time in order to move the meal along a little faster.

Here’s Judy and the kids, still able to smile despite being tired and hungry. James was about ready to fall asleep. Yes, my girls are cold-blooded. They’re always cold, so had their jackets.

img_0640.jpg

While we were wating, a manager brought out an additional complimentary appetizer to try to make up for our wait. It was pea samosas. It was a very nice gesture, and we thanked him.

img_0643.jpg

Randall came out and was happy to see that the manager had given us a comp’d appetizer, but then quickly realized that one of our party couldn’t eat it. :scared1: He asked her if she wanted anything else, but she said no. (I think if he’d have given her some ideas/options she might have taken him up on it.)

Oh, I should mention that since James is 9 he was able to order off of the (cheaper!) kids menu. The problem here though, was that the only real Indian dish on the kids menu was tandoori chicken. I’m sure they don’t expect young kids to want Indian food, but James wanted to try the short ribs. So, Judy asked if they could substitute short ribs for the chicken. (Okay, now we’re being the trouble-making customers.) Randall checked with the chef, and came back to report that they could.

Soon, everything arrived. The picture below is of the bread service items, we got two orders since there were five of us (and hungry) and the menu says it serves two. We were able to try all four of the bread options since you have a choice of three and we put in two orders. We liked the paneer paratha bread since it contained cheese (that’s the paneer part of paneer paratha!). The accompaniments we selected were: starting with the left plate, upper left item, going clock-wise -- roasted red bell pepper hummus, mango chutney, and cucumber raita. Then on the right plate, starting at the top, garlic-ginger pickle, tamarind chutney, and coriander chutney. We really liked these, and I wish I could give you a solid recommendation, but we all liked different ones. Judy liked the garlic-ginger, which was kind of spicy. I liked the tamarind chutney, which was pretty sweet. The hummus, mango chutney, and cucumber raita were good, and are pretty common Indian restaurant items. I think I liked the coriander chutney, but don’t remember that one very well.

img_0649.jpg

Along with the bread service came all of our entrees. Here are James’ short ribs. This picture doesn’t do it justice, but the amount they gave him was huge. Hardly a child portion, but that’s okay we’ve got a fridge up on the 4th floor!

img_0644.jpg

Lauren ordered from the “Slow Cooked in Gravy” section of the menu. You get to pick two items, along with basmati rice or five-grain pilaf. She got the shrimp with green curry sauce and the beef short ribs. The kids must be getting used to my insistence to photograph everything, as Lauren is running her "model hands" along the food.

img_0645.jpg

Marlene got the dum biryani. It’s vegetables inside of a baked dough shell.

img_0646.jpg

Judy got the banana leaf-wrapped sustainable fish. (This is probably the only time I'll use the word "banana" in this TR, so had to insert the dancing banana smilie.)

img_0647.jpg

And I also ordered from the “Slow Cooked” section of the menu, selecting the beef short ribs, basmati rice, and the chicken with red sauce.

img_0648.jpg

The server insisted upon unwrapping Judy’s fish, since there’s a possibility of getting injured from the steam.

img_0651.jpg

We ate and everyone loved their food. The kids thought it was awesome! The only leftovers we had were some of James’ short ribs. (I told you we were hungry!) We were feeling a little better over the wait we had to get in.

Here’s a shot of the bar section of the restaurant, which was just to my left.

img_0652.jpg

And lastly, desserts. James got the rice pudding with caramel sauce from the kids menu. In the time since we arrived back home I saw on someone else’s trip report that they didn’t like the rice pudding. I told James and he was shocked. He really liked it. I tried it and thought it was good too.

img_0655.jpg

The rest of us got a chai cream to try. Randall, our server, said it tasted “like Christmas”. And I thought I tasted some nutmeg in it, but he said that it had none. It was pretty good, and different from just about anything I’ve ever had. He also brought out one last item to appease us for the wait we endured -- a piece of egg-less chocolate cake, “on the mouse”. It was quite good.

img_0656.jpg

After we finished, Judy and the kids went up to the room to get ready for bed while I took care of the bill. Oh, I almost forgot -- the kids wrote "Randall Rocks" on the kids menu and left it for him. He really was a fantastic server. Very attentive and friendly. He seemed to really appreciate that they left him a note, and he told me he was going to take it home. Then I went to the gift shop to get the kids each a drink mug to use at the refilling stations (located in the gift shop and at the pool bar in Kidani). I got three different colors and when I went back to the room they each called out which color they wanted, and they each wanted a different color. No fighting! Now that’s some real Disney magic to end the evening.

Just found your trip report and have really enjoyed reading it. I love AKL and the villas, they are just beautiful and feel homey. Can't wait to read more.

That was a long wait but at least they tried to make it up to you. To funny about the app they brought you with peas. At least it sounds like you enjoyed the food and that is always a good thing and the kids picking a different color helps.

Sorry about the wait! Having worked most of my life in the restaurant industry, those unfortunate things happen from time to time especially when it's a new restaurant. I'm glad the wait staff and mgmt tried to rectify the situation.

The food sounds just awesome...i guess I need to re-think my restaurant selections......

Your dinner looks great! I didn't know they had a new restraunt.

Ahhh I know it well. We have a beach house at Kure and DD goes to UNCW. Little brother lives there.

We lived south of Wilmington and preferred to go to the beaches along the area of Carolina Beach, Kure, and Fort Fisher over the Wrightsville Beach area.

Yes, I'm ready to go back. DW is still holding a slight grudge, so our next visit will be key.

Yes, I'm sure that's true.

We did like the food. An advantage they have over Boma is that they have windows that face the savanna so you can get some good views of the animals while you eat. We weren't seated near them, and it was also getting late/dark by that time.

It was!

That food looked delicious! We love Indian food so would have loved to give it a try.

Yes, it was. I should have put in my TR that they call it "the art of African cooking with Indian flavors".

Monday, June 29th, our Epcot day. I was still running on the adrenaline of Disney excitement and was the first up. After I showered I woke Judy up and then started finding more and more reasons to go into the kitchen to start turning on lights and making noise so that the kids, who were sleeping in the living room, would get the hint. The girls slept on the pull-out couch and James on the pull-out chair. James was happy with the comfort of the pull-out chair, but the girls weren’t real crazy about the couch. Eventually it became evident that the “gentle stirring” of activity wasn’t doing the trick, so Judy had to pull back the curtains and exclaim, “Stop yer snorin’ and let’s get to Soarin’”. (Yes, she really said that.)

We got to the bus stop at about 8:30 am, and had to wait about 10 minutes for an Epcot bus. I took a picture of the gang while waiting for the bus.

img_0663.jpg

I asked Marlene to take one with me in it….just to prove that I was in fact, on this trip. I will have lots of photopass pics to post eventually, but we did a share with a few other families so I won’t get the cd for probably a few more weeks yet. I’m wearing one of the two shirts I got at the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney. One of the Goofy sayings on it is “Thinking Causes Thought” -- we like that one and are still using it around the house sometimes.

img_0667.jpg

The bus pulled-in to Epcot right at 9:00, so we slightly missed rope drop. We stuck with our plan though, that I’d go to Soarin’ for fastpasses and the rest of the crew would leisurely make their way to Test Track and then I’d meet them there. It took a little while to get the fastpasses. What a mob at the Soarin’ fastpass machines first thing in the morning, when you’re at the back of the rope drop crowd. And let me add, don’t get behind me in a grocery store line, because I sure have a knack for picking the slowest line. Our return time was for 10:24, which is a little late for the first fastpass of the day, but maybe not too bad considering it was for Soarin’ and we were behind the rope drop crowd.

I made it over to Test Track :teleport: and we got in the standby line, which said it had a 20 minute wait, and was probably about right. I took this picture while in line, because I saw the “13 Year-Old Girl” on the wall and Marlene nearly is a 13 year-old girl.

img_0668.jpg

While in line I had the idea  that at Epcot Disney should offer face paintings of the test dummy circles -- the ones that are four quadrants of yellow and black. I think they'd be popular. I'd get one. Okay, no I wouldn't, but I bet other people would.

Here are a couple of pictures on the ride.

img_0673.jpg

The guy beside Marlene was a very nice guy from Michigan who was a single rider who got matched-up with us. We got a chance to talk to him a little bit because the ride broke-down part-way through, while we were still inside. This was already his second ride on Test Track that day.

img_0675.jpg

Here’s a “redneck picture” from our ride. It took me a little while to figure out what settings I needed to use on my camera to get this to turn out. I don’t think I had it set quite correctly for this one, but I got better as the week went on. (Then the hard part became remember to adjust the settings back for regular pictures.)

img_0676.jpg

I was the only one of us who had ridden Test Track before, and everyone loved it! Particularly James. It’s not technically a rollercoaster, but it was definitely another step in his progression of thrill rides.

From there we went over to Mission Space, which none of us had ever ridden before. That being the case, we decided to just try the Green (tamer) version. We all enjoyed that, and the kids wanted to try the Orange version. Judy decided to pass on that, so I went with them. We liked it even better. You don’t have a spinning sensation, like on those dreaded teacups. :crazy2: It’s the same ride as the Green version, but a little more intense. When your rocket lifts off you can feel your feel the face on your skin pulling back, especially near your ears and jaw. And when you are asked to push buttons as part of your assignment (each seat is a different crew member with assigned tasks), your arms feel quite heavy and you have a little difficulty getting them to reach the button.

When we left Mission Space I went and got a set of fastpasses for another ride on Test Track. The return time was 1:50.

img_0677.jpg

Now it was time to head over to Soarin’ to use our fastpasses. It was around 11:00, so I wanted to get the kids signed up for Kim Possible, but the only recruiting station I was aware of from my research/planning :surfweb: was out as you make your way away from Future World to the World Showcase and that was quite a bit out of the way, so we just went straight to Soarin’. Later in the week when we were back at Epcot, I saw recruiting stations in both of the Innoventions buildings, which we could have stopped at on the way to Soarin’, but I wasn’t aware of them at the time.

We rode Soarin’ and enjoyed it. Both Judy and I had been on it before, but it was the first time for the kids. They got a kick out of the golf ball coming at you and the smells of pine trees and orange trees. As we left Judy mentioned that it’s a good ride, but not one that she’d necessarily want to have a fastpass to ride a second time immediately after. I agreed.

At about 11:30 we stopped at the Kim Possible recruiting station. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this, it’s a new offering this year. Kids receive a “Kim-municator” cell phone that they use to help Kim Possible (a Disney Channel cartoon character) to complete spy missions around the World Showcase. At the recruiting station you receive a ticket that tells you what time and at what country in the World Showcase your mission will begin, and you have to go to the Kim Possible station in that country to receive your Kim-municator and start the mission. The ticket is like a fastpass, but doesn’t count as a fastpass. It’s just so that they can control who’s doing what, where, and when so that they don’t happen to have everybody at the same country at the same time. Our return time was for 12:45 in Norway, which was not what I’d hoped for since our lunch ADR was for 1:00 at Biergarten. I was wishing that somehow we had gotten a ticket when they opened the recruiting centers at 11:00, but we didn’t know about the ones in the Innoventions buildings.

img_0678.jpg

So, we started walking around the World Showcase. We headed to the right, toward Canada, which meant that we’d have to walk all the way around to get to Norway. I know, what was I thinking? I don’t know.

I took this picture as we started off.

img_0679.jpg

And these in Canada.

img_0680.jpg

img_0682.jpg

A photopass guy took this one of us in France. The sun was absolutely brutal at this spot and really hurt our eyes. Our photopass pictures here turned out about the same as this one.

img_0685.jpg

Trying on berets in France.

img_0687.jpg

I took this one because I thought the crowd seemed pretty light. This was around noon.

img_0688.jpg

Around Italy James’ feet started to hurt so we made a plan that he and I would take a break there, while Judy and the girls would go on to Norway to check-in for Kim Possible, then meet us back at Biergarten. I took this picture of Spaceship Earth as seen from across the lake in Italy.

img_0689.jpg

While we were waiting there, Sergio appeared and prepared to perform.

img_0690.jpg

img_0692.jpg

James got to throw a ball into a net Sergio was holding.

img_0693.jpg

img_0694.jpg

Sergio went around and had all these various kids throw the ball into the net, even a small child in a stroller (you can see her on the right side of the picture above). Of course he’d move the net however far he needed to for the kid to make the shot. Then he gave the ball to a man in the crowd and when he shot, Sergio didn’t move at all, so the man missed. Sergio moved closer and the man still missed. Through mime and with the whistle he was blowing Sergio conveyed, “Hey all these kids made it. Even this little tyke!” So he moved closer and closer until the guy practically dunked it into the net. It was quite funny. :lmao:

Then we thought we’d better get moving to meet the ladies in Germany. We were definitely getting hungry, thirsty, hot, tired, and ready for a break indoors.

Sounds like a great time. I can so relate to being on the wrong line in the grocery store. I never go on the shortest line any more. I hopefully have learned my lesson.:lmao:
