Okay, this is totally going to fall in the category of "things you could live the rest of your life never knowing," but I thought I'd toss it out there anyway.

If you use those tubes of crescent rolls to make pie iron snacks over the campfire (or the grill if you're at the Fort): Now there's a tube of crescent rolls that just come as a complete sheet, no perforations. So you don't have to take the extra 3.4 seconds to pinch the dotted lines together when you're making pudgie pies in the pie iron! Woohoo! What will you do with all that extra time?

So...is this "change your life info?" No. But If you can get to dessert quicker, it's all good in my book.:goodvibes

I'm curious...what's a pudgie pie and how do you make it? Always learning something new on the boards!

You can also use Filo dough for a super flaky, guaranteed to make a mess on your shirt, wonderful dessert.

We like to take the crescents and make ham and cheese pocket sandwiches out of them.

It's the general term for any "sandwich" type snack/meal/dessert you make in a pie iron -- basically two pieces of bread/tortilla/crescent roll/etc. with a filling sealed inside and heated over the fire. Mmmmmmm.....

Well, I've done the bread, done the crescent rolls, and love them. But Filo dough??!! You HAD to go and tell me that, didn't you? I gained enough weight on my last camping trip without that tidbit of knowledge. Thanks a bunch Memph1s! As long as you've let that cat out of its bag...what would you suggest I fill my little pudgie filo bombs with? I'm thinking walnuts, cinnamon, butter and honey...sort of like pie iron baklava. What do you do?

Okay, I'm salivating!

Oh....we call these surprise pockets...but pudgie pocket is more appropriate. Now the filo with cinnamon, butter and walnuts will be a new favorite I'm sure.

Yes that is wonderful.
You can also do cinnamon, butter, little sugar and any kind of fruit you like or any kind of caned pie filling, finish them off with a dusting of powdered sugar and/or coco. They can also be topped with whip cream or ice cream. The really torturous part is letting it set on a plate to cool so the pie filling does not incinerate the roof of your mouth. Believe me you will not make that mistake twice no matter how hard it is to wait.

Ok, so do you spray your iron and then press the crescent rolls in to each side and then fill? I know when I make pizza with the crescent rolls the dough is like elastic and shrinks back, how do you do this without the "shrinkage"....sorry, maybe I am just having a blond moment. How long do you leave yours in the coals.

*** Side note......we toast crescent rolls on the end of a 3" dowl that is buttered. Once they are a nice golden brown, they slip right off the end and we fill them with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce...mm mm good.

We'll be right over!!! :lmao:

Some of my favorites are:

cherry pie filling
peanut butter, jelly and marshmallow fluff
sliced bananas and chocolate
ANYthing and cheese
heck anything and chocolate!

Well, I'm not waiting to go camping to try some of these...I'm gonna fire up the grill tonight! :goodvibes

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Plain ol grocery store brand white bread is what I've used. Never thought about crescent rolls, filo dough, pizza dough. I tried canned biscuits once and ended up with a mess. Hmmmm, a toasted baklavah....hmmmmmm. Cinnamon, honey, nuts, a little butter.......I think you're on to something here. How does anyone think egg roll wrappers would work?

You know Deb, I bet that would work. Spray the iron good with Pam, and lay the egg roll wrapper on one side. You could use leftover lo mein or almost any kind of Chinese food, or you could pan fry some cabbage, bean sprouts, mushrooms, a little pork....anything you like along these lines. Lay another wrapper on top or fold over, and close the iron. Yum!

OK, true confession time.

I have camped all my life.

I have cooked some pretty good meals over a campfire and in dutch ovens, or, while at the Fort, a propane camp stove.

I have two of these pie iron things that I received as a gift years ago.

And, I've never used them. In fact, I have never even brought them along on a camping trip.

So, someone tell me. How do you use these things with a charcoal grill? Do you put the iron in the coals? Or, on top of the grill? How do you know when it's done?

How about some basic instructions?

And some easy beginner recipes?

We have a saying in our house:
"You can never have too much cheese or chocolate"
These are 2 ingredients I simply do not measure!

TCD - they are a fun and easy way to cook with kids or teens. I've never used them with a charcoal grill, as I always use them in a campfire (not at the Fort of course!), but I see no reason why you couldn't. You would put them right in the HOT coals. Most people start with plain white bread. You don't need to, but I prefer the results when the bread is buttered. Otherwise the bread will be dry. i also spray the iron with Pam to prevent sticking..but I suppose the butter would do that anyways.

You have to play around with timing to see when they are done. I usually put the iron in the coals for a few minutes, then flip and leave for a couple more minutes.

A basic recipe to try it out is to do pizzas. White bread, a little bit of sauce, cheese, and whatever toppings you like. My kids prefer just pepperoni, I like some onion, sausage, peppers, or whatever. Another easy one is ham and cheese. Just put together, close the iron, and put in the coals until cooked. You'll know when the bread gets browned, just like if you were grilling on the stove.

You can also make easy desserts with white bread or crescent rolls dough from those cans in the refrigerator case. Fill when your favorite pie filling from a can. Those might take a couple minutes longer than the sandwiches, but YUM.

I also like to do reubens. Use rye or pumpernickel, corned beef or turkey, saurkraut, and swiss cheese. I add my thousand island dressing after its cooked so it doesn't get soggy. This is one of my favorites. The key is to butter the bread well, and let it cook until the bread is nice and toasty. I put the iron right on some hot coals, and check it every couple minutes.

Finally, I've found lots of interesting ideas by Googling "pie iron recipes", or something similar. Especially for desserts...there are lots of great ideas out there. Try them out TCD! I think you'll enjoy them. If you'll be at the Fort Thanksgiving weekend we should have a pie iron party!
