I have a mid-western southern accent - laugh!!! I was born in St. Louis but spent 6 years during my tween/teen years in Birmingham, AL - I returned to St. Louis at 16 and then spent 3 years in undergrad in Alabama. After my third year in college I returned (and finished up undergrad) to St. Louis. So saying things like, hearr - emphasis are the 'earr' sound and "what he said" all in the same sentence. According to the test I have a southern accent.

"Inland North" which is right on, but I also call it soda, not pop. I have lived in the south suburbs of Chicago my whole life, except my 2nd year of college I was in Missouri, right across the river from Quincy, Illinois..

Midland...I was born and raised in the Midwest.

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I remember when I moved down here to Kentucky in middle school and a friend pointed out a girl named Dawn, only she called her "Don." I thought a girl named Don was weird, so I said something to my friend about it. She said a lot of girls are named "Don." So, then I asked her to spell it and she said D-a-w-n.

They say pen and pin the same here, too, and so everyone will know which they mean, they call pens "ink pens".

I say Merry/Mary/Marry all the same. Hmm.

Well, they were sure right about this one. Although carbonated drinks around this area are called "soda".

Of course we don't have an accent - everybody else does!
