How is dinner at Captain's Grille? We are considering it & would like input from anyone who has tried it.

Copied from an earlier post.... Our experience with Captains Grille:

DH & I had a "date night" at Captains Grille last visit - July '08....Got pizza for the teens at the BC and walked over to Yacht Club.

But they MUST have changed the menu because I could have sworn I had Prime Rib...and I just checked the menu and Prime Rib is not on there!

I can tell you...the atmosphere is not the greatest...our meal was Okay...

Although the restaurant was fairly empty...we were sat next to another older couple....and due to the proximity of the seats...as it was our..."Date Night"...it was a bit awkward at first...until we just said 'heck with it' and just started up quite a wonderful little conversation with the couple (or I think they may have started it with us)...and we were having a nice time...until they sat the 12 topper table with the babies....quite close...and we couldn't hear a thing anymore...

Food was okay. Not quite the romantic meal I had planned. Nice time though...and I wouldn't go back any time soon...unless it was just a last minute matter of convenience....

We've had very good meals here both breakfast and dinner. Previous poster is right, I wouldnt call it romantic though. We love it because the food is good and we usually can eat there without ADR's (we're not planners). I liked it because it had a different menu, I had the baked scallops which was good.

I stayed at the YC on over a dozen occasions before I finally tried CG. When I did finally try it, I was very pleasantly surprised and, as a aresult, have gone back on several occasions. It is not up to the level of the signature restaurants, but it is a very solid and enjoyable place for a meal. There is not a lot of atmosphere at the restaurant, but the food and service are pretty good.

We were there this past December and had a great experience.

Our server was excellent and the food was superb. The head chef was fairly new, but the server didn't say how new.

The steak I had was excellent, I am very picky about steaks.

They had a new cheesecake dessert that was not your typical cheesecake. I think it was made with gelatin and it took a bite or two to get used to the texture, but once once you did it was phenomenal!!!

The atmosphere was okay. Others have posted it was not romantic, but I didn't read that as one of your criteria.

I highly recommend this restaurant, but don't tell too many about it. I don't want the secret to get too wide spread. :goodvibes

edit: I just looked at little closer at your user specs! What's up, BHAM!!!

We dined here last month. We were staying at BC and had ressies at Kona Cafe but were too tired and hot to traipse over the the Poly. The concierge found us a ressie at Captain's Grille instead. I didn't care for the atmosphere. It was just a little too loud and bustling - definitely not a quiet and relaxing place to enjoy a meal. However, the food was quite good - my rib eye steak was better than the more expensive strip steak I'd had a few days earlier at Yachtsman. And the desserts were very, very nicely presented and really yummy.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a place we will try. We are not looking for romantic since we will have a five year old with us. Busy & not quiet are fine with us when we have our daughter along with us. Can't wait til we get to go back in May.

Just curious to those that have eaten here recently. We made ADR's for October and on the Disney site the menu shows crab legs as a dinner choice. I don't see that on any other menu on different websites. Are there crab legs? MY ds is dying to get them if they do! TIA!

We were able to pick up a last minute ressie as a substitute and we were pleased with our meal.

Let me 1st say that the color scheme reminds me of the TSMM ride at California Adventure, so I was in a good mood from the outset. We were seated in a corner booth, so we really felt like we were away from any hustle and bustle [but we really didn't notice any, either]

Our meals were terrific. I can't recall exactly what we ate, seems like I had a wedge salad and prime rib, DH had something fish...DS ate [so whatever it was, it must have been good!]

Friendly service...we'll be back.

We LOVED it! The food was plentiful and delicious. I think it's an overlooked gem. I had the pork chop and each of my teen sons had a different cut of steak and everyone left full and happy. The atmosphere was very quiet and soothing after a hectic/busy day at Epcot. I noticed a lot of couples enjoying a quiet meal as well as families.

We ate there April 08 and enjoyed it! Great food and super quiet setting

We were wondering the same exact thing! We want crab legs soo bad and I hope they have them. The one thing I noticed is that the Disney site was updated like two months ago and wdwinfo was updated like 1 or 2 years ago.. I think I would go with the Disney site..at least that's what I am hoping!!!!

TeenaS is a CM who posts over on the YC/BC thread - she posted this last week - scroll down to post #84:

I follow that thread but it was posted before I made my reservations there so I didn't even catch it thanks! Great my DS will be thrilled to get the crab legs. He's 10 so this will be his first trip to order off the adult menu! He's so looking forward to that. Usually it's a week of chicken nuggets morning, noon, and night! LOL!

Captian's Grill was one of the best meals we had last year. I definately recommend going here.

The menu on www.disneyworld.com does list snow crab legs on the menu. I look forward to trying the CG Experience. We have ADRs for Sept.

We thought the food at CG was ok but what was fabulous was the berry shakes. They were by far the best we had in WDW (and we had quite a few!) The server even refilled them for us. He said something about them being homemade. Anyway, this is one of two places my kids want to go back to and it is just for the shakes (which we are not going to do)!

I booked Captain's Grille last night so I was interested to see your thread. The menu looks ok to me. We are planning to go after our Animal Kingdom night for a late dinner in October. Not sure how the transportation will work out. I think we could get a bus to the Yact Club from Animal Kingdom but not sure how we should navigate back to POP... most likely a taxi... dont you think? Or maybe a taxi both ways?

How late is Epcot open that night? Depending on when your ADR is & how long it takes, you may be able to get an Epcot bus back. If you have park hoppers, you can walk from Captain's Grille through the Epcot International Gateway, then go through the park & catch the bus back to POP.If you don't have hoppers, or are getting done more than an hour after Epcot closes, you'll have to get a cab.

Epcot closes at 9pm. Looks like we will just take a cab.

I would like to hear more about the food at the Captn's Grille. And see some pictures. It doesnt seem to be very popular on the "food porn" So is Captn's Grille a hidden treasure or fools gold?
