Flame suit on.....

I think this whole situation is VERY sad. I just knew these two were going to work it out. What happen to therapy? They could NOT have been separated for too long - one has already filed for divorce? What happen to RESPECTING the wedding vows? They said them twice. I am so sick of people getting married and lying to their friends, family and GOD himself. As soon as times get tough – somebody has to leave – run. Thinking the grass is greener somewhere else. They have 8 children together - they should be BONDED for life. Yes I said it. I wish I was the judge on their case, I'd mandate them to at least ONE YEAR in marriage therapy. Come to think of it – two years in therapy – for that second wedding!!! They should work it out – Period!!!!!

I agree. In NC, legal sep. has to be 12 mo. or at least it used to be. Divorce is too easy IMO. I think the papers are Jon, Kate is proud and a fighter. Jon is weak and one to throw in the towel. I believe she would've at least tried. I guess she's just too old for him now.

I totally agree. Jon seemed like he couldn't wait to jump out of that chair and "get on with his life." --- and the money. I notice he said he will probably still do the show. If it wasn't so sad, I would have laughed when he said he might get a job offer. I bet he's hoping for his OWN show "Jon on His Own" or "Just Jon" or something. :sad2:

It's going to be called "Jon Minus Nine" .....

So, if the fine is 10 million or a billion dollars and they don't have a billion dollars what do you suggest they do? I don't know how much money they have, that is K & J's money discretionary money, but if they don't have it, just how do they just 'quit' the contract.? What's the point of a legal contract if it's that easy to get out of?
I'm serious..we can say, do whatever it takes, but how can we say that, without knowing the ramifications?

Is a billion dollars more important than your children's lives?

I read on People that Kate filed the papers.

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20286839,00.html

The war of words begins:

Kate: "Over the course of this weekend, Jon's activities have left me no choice but to file legal procedures in order to protect myself and our children," Kate said in a statement Monday night. "While there are reasons why it was appropriate and necessary for me to initiate this proceeding, I do not wish to discuss those reasons at this time, in the hope that all issues will be resolved amicably between Jon and myself. As always, my first priority remains our children."

Jon: "This afternoon, Kate filed for divorce. Our kids are still my number one priority. I love them and want to make sure they stay happy, healthy and safe. My job is being the best, most supportive and loving father that I can be to my kids, and not being married to Kate doesn’t change that."

This will be a difficult transition for all of us ... but Kate and I will work out a schedule that enables our kids to have plenty of quality time with both of us at home in Pennsylvania. In terms of my marriage, it’s no secret that the past six months or so have been very difficult for Kate and me. We are no different than other couples and parents who are facing a crossroads in their marriage. I am of course deeply saddened that we are divorcing."

You're right. Jon is very lazy. Kate is very overbearing. That is not a good combo.

No it is not a good combo. I'm not a great fan of Kate either but tonight she looked broken and lost. Genuinely and honestly sad. Jon was smirking and seemed to not care and just wanted to get it over with. Kate even said she knows Jon is angry with her and she wants to talk about it with but he will not have any discussion with her. If they truly loved each other I feel like they would've tried. It did come across that Kate was willing but Jon was not. That's my opinion. As I said, I've not been a huge Kate fan but tonight had me sad and teary-eyed because she truly looked sad and upset. She said she didn't want to be alone and I believe that. I'm sure she was surprised by Jon's resolve but it is sad that they couldn't have worked it out.

As far as the show goes, I think it will be a disaster. I wish they'd end it and take the time they ALL going to need to heal. What a mess. My heart really breaks for the kids, I am a child of divorce and it is so hard. Even though my parents fought, I still wanted them together so we could be a family. I think that is going to be really difficult for the kids to adjust to. Poor little ones.

Retooling the whole format of the show will be the kiss of death for the show, thank God.
No... It's epitaph was written tonight. It's dead now. The last remaining nuggets of the original concept of the show went "poof" when the turd was dropped in the punch bowl. More shows will air, but they will be farces.

It doesn't matter "who" was the "most" wrong - or who was the "most" right..

There's is absolutely no reason (other than money) for them to air their dirty laundry and announce their pending divorce on tv - knowing full well what kind of impact this will have on their children - both now and in the future.. It was totally disgusting and irresponsible on both of their parts..

Or maybe this is a new "trend".. Video tape the discussion and announcement of your divorce, have it televised, and save that "happy childhood memory" on DVD for your children to enjoy over and over and over again..

Yeah.. That's it..

agreed. and other than the big announcement shows, the ratings were declining already.

I wonder if attractions, resorts, companies, etc. will still contact TLC to continue offering things for product placement on the show.

Well I didn't get to read every post because as I was trying to it just kept getting longer and longer so I figured I would post then read LOL. I think this whole situation is very sad. I understand why they started doing the show they wanted to give their kids opportunities they would not normally have. Heck I have 4 kids and it's hard to do all the things I want with them. What I don't understand is why they didn't end it when they saw it taking a toll on their family. If this is what money gets you, I don't want it. I do wonder if they could have worked this out had Jon not already moved on physically and emotionally. They knew their was problems and they should have gotten counseling before it came to this. Maybe it was their pride knowing that everyone would know they were seeing a marriage counselor. I don't know but their happiness and their childrens would have been worth it. I know they have different personalities but they could have lived together in harmony had they went and worked on the marriage instead of him skipping out and her becoming self absorbed. I think they both showed selfishness in that but Jon especially. He had to have known he was going to get busted, he's a public figure. Or maybe that is what he wanted it gave him a way out without having to verbalize it to Kate. I think they should request out of the contract, I can't imagine they would be turned down since TLC is already getting a bad rap for all this. I'm sure they are loving their ratings but someone there has to have a heart. I think they could work it out if Jon wasn't already emotionally invested elsewhere. I just feel so sad for the kids, especially Maddie since she already had some emotional issues going on.

The children are not their priority.. They made that abundantly clear tonight..

More of Kate playing the victim.. What was Jon going to do? Kidnap the children? Start beating Kate? "Protecting herself and her children" equals "protecting her victim image.."

It's all PR..

Hmmm... I don't see it as her trying to play the victim. If I knew my marriage was heading towards divorce; the smart thing to do and what I would hope I would do, would to have enough sense to yes protect myself and my kids, financially, emotionally ect. I'm sure she's scared to death that there could be a possibility (slight as it may seem) that one, Jon may try to make her life a living hell, he might try to get custody of the kids, and maybe he would. In my marriage, I will say that it would be pretty hard to believe (from a legal standpoint) that my DH would ever get primary custody of our children, if it ever came to that, but I can guarentee you that my first step would be protecting myself/children in the terms of making sure I did everything in my power to not allow my DH to possibly somehow get full custody. Slight as the possibility may be, as a mom it would always be in the back of my head, and I wouldn't willing to take chances.

I admit it, I was a hypocrite and watched the last 1/2 hour even though I said I wouldn't. It just makes me so mad I could scream. These are two of the most selfish people I have ever seen.

I wanted to link an earlier post but I couldn't find it. The posted of that did an excellent job of laying out the reasons the show wasn't "just for the kids." IF they were really doing that show for the future financial security of their children, they would have split the money into tenths; Jon and Kate would take 1/5 of it for the household income (house, cars, gas, food, etc, if they pay for any of those things) and a remaining money should have been split 8 ways with each of the kids getting an amount set aside in a trust fund. They are just fooling themselves if they think their 6 and 9 year olds give a rat's patooty about that money. I was sick to my stomach hearing over and over again that the house, the yard, the land, etc was all for the kids. So is the mortgage in their names? So when the house gets sold in 5, 10 years or however long, are Jon and Kate going to split those proceeds between the kids? My money is on NO WAY.

If you went to each of those kids, and asked if they would rather have the house and all it's trappings or their family together again, I am pretty certain they would pick their family. Now I do agree that it's not always good to stay in a bad marriage just for the kids; my mother divorced my father, who had substance abuse problems, and our lives are much better for it. But to prance around on your high horse on national TV and say that you're going to continue this mess for your kids is not only crazy, it's a lie. That's probably the reason they're keeping the house and splitting their time there; since they're still going to do the show, now neither one of them has to go and get a real job to support their family. :headache:

I wonder if anyone has started a letter to TLC...if so, please PM me because I want to sign it. I wonder if they are taking suggestions for the title of the new show; maybe they can go to the kids and ask their opinions for titles since they're already scarred them anyway, might as well get their input. :headache:

Of course it isn't, but realistically if they had to pay, say $10 million, and that would involve selling the house and emptying their savings, then what? They live on the street with the kids? A 3 bedroom apartment? They would still have eight children to feed, cloth and shelter at the bare minimum.

I do not believe Kate wants to end the show, but it is entirely possible that even if she did the contract might make it virtually impossible.

I think their marketability will quickly become only slightly better than Michael Jackson's after it became known that be liked to cuddle boys to sleep.

I also wonder how the people at Crooked Houses feel about being associated with J&K's marital implosion!

I can see I'm alone in this, but I would rather live in a little cramped apartment and know that my kids are being taken care of emotionally than live in a mansion that is all a lie.

Where have you been? You are cracking me up tonight.

With 60% of Americans divorced and a large population of single moms? Sure. I think you might see different placements, but they will still be there. The focus may be different, and you may see things like 'The Maids' for Kate, and Dial a Date for Jon, but they will still be there. As well, I think you will see things meant to brighten the kids lives, such as parks and resorts.

If Jon and Kate have been arguing for a long time, this time out may be better for the kids. There are a lot of divorced parents on the Dis, and I've yet to hear one of them say, I wish I had stayed with my husband (or wife) and just duked it out..it's so much better for the kids.

I hardly think this is the same. It isn't illegal to divorce, almost 60% of Americans do that. It is illegal to cuddle boys to sleep, in the inference you are using that.

Kate is not your typical single Mom. She doesn't go to a 9-5 job, struggle to pay daycare, come home exhausted to no help, do it all alone, but still enjoy her children. I think it will be a slap in the face to single Moms out there that are struggling to hear of her "struggles" with cooks, house cleaners, drivers, bodyguards, nannies, etc., etc.

I'm pretty sure he meant that tongue-in-cheek.
