DC hotel at reasonable price

We have a wedding in Baltimore on 7/11 but are thinking of hitting DC the day before to take the kids to the Smithsoneon and see sites in that area. Can anyone recommend a good hotel that is reasonably priced? Thanks.

Truthfully, I'd stay in the suburbs. You'll pay more money staying in the city. Look in the Columbia MD area. It's almost mid-way between Balt/DC. I can't recommend a specific hotel though. I live here. I don't need a hotel.
If you will be going to the Smithsonian 7/10/09, plan on leaving a little later in the morning and staying a little later in the evening. Traffic here is miserable..

There's a Residence Inn on Capitol Hill that is just a few blocks from Air & Space. Stayed there last year and were pleased (and I lived in DC for three years on the Hill). Breakfast is included and they have suites, so it's good for families. A few other DISers have rec'd this hotel as well from what I've seen on these boards in the past.

You could try bidding on priceline. There is a site where people post recent winning bids for hotels from priceline. It won't let me post the link for some reason, but the website is www.biddingfortravel.com. Just find the "Washington D.C." forum and it will show you recent winning bids on priceline. You can also find "tips" online about how to bid on priceline in the most effective manner. --Katie

Breakfast is included and they have suites, so it's good for families. A few other DISers have rec'd this hotel as well from what I've seen on these boards in the past.

I'm looking at this place and it seems nice. Can I ask a couple of questions? How is it to get to places like the mall, capital, etc. I see it's near 695 - could you hear any noise from traffic? Are there any rooms with views? How was the nearby metro? Thanks for answering these!

Another vote for the suburbs...
DC hotels charge hefty for parking too.
Perhaps something on the Metro line... BWI, Baltimore, Shadygrove...
If you grab a metro one day tix -its very easy to get on and off where you need to be.

My friend had 2 kids who went to college in DC and always stayed in Arlington. This is where he recommends:

The hotel was a few blocks right behind the Air and Space Museum. That SW part of town is alot of federal office buildings, so I think the Metro is Federal Center SW, but you'd have to double check (the hotel website has it too).

Didn't hear noise from traffic, but there are train tracks that run by the vicinity. But, our room had a perfect view of the Capitol dome!

We'd stay there again. Before DH and I would stay in town with friends or at The Mayflower, but that's downtown and not close to the National Mall. With two kids this hotel was great because we got a 1 bedroom with a full kitchen, living room, and one and a half baths. During our stay last April the hotel was full of families. I think I paid just under $200 ($189?), a little pricey, but we wanted the proximity to our friends.

If you decide to go to Baltimore a day early, the Inner Harbor and Aquarium are alot of fun for families as well. I'm not sure if the Constellation (tall ship) is still docked there. Baltimore has it's own Little Italy and a funky area (bars, vintage shops) called Fells Point that is close to the harbor.

AAA has a deal for "The Liasion" on Capital Hill for $129 including parking. We stayed across the street at the Hyatt last year for $85 (priceline) and hopped over to the Liasion's rooftop pool- (shhh!) very nice. The location was terrific-walking distance to everything. We will be grabbing this deal ourselves for a few days in August.

same here, I would stay in the suburbs and take the Metro. Crystal City / Rosslyn area. If you want to be close to the museums. Stay at the Holiday Inn Capital on C Street. its one block from the smithsonian museums. And i work right next to it

We have stayed at the Residence Inn Capitol before and will be staying there in July. We got a 1 bedroom, 2 Queen bed suite for $118 a night plus $29 a night parking. It is in great walking distance to the museums. I like that if some of group tires of the museum they can walk back easily to the hotel. Plus you can't beat the free breakfast. We didn't notice traffic or train noise.
