I want to surprise DH with a nice dinner tonight and have bread with an olive oil dip but don't know what olive oil to get at the store.
Please recommend your favorite.

Also can you tell me what you like to add to the oil to help with the flavor. Thanks :goodvibes

The brand of olive oil isn't as important to me as flavor. For dipping, you will want a light olive oil. The light will be light in flavor, so it won't be as heavy as extra virgin olive oil.

As for flavor, I had a bit of balsamic vinegar . Very Yummy!

HTH!

If you have a Sprouts Farmers Market near you, there brand is light and very good :)

I think it all depends on your taste. For dipping DH & I prefer a very fruity extra virgin olive oil sprinkled with a little kosher salt and pepper. I usually get my evoo at Trader Joe's.

The best tasting olive oils are going to be the dark, fruity, extra virgin olive oils. The light olive oils are meant for cooking and are not going to have the taste your looking for. Italian spices such as oregano, rosemary, basil are fabulous mixed in (don't forget salt and pepper). You can also grate some fresh parmesan cheese over it.:thumbsup2

THere is a variety spice mix that I buy at Publix that has 4 types, reminds me of what they use a Carrabas. I can't put my hands on it right now but I have bought it in the bakery area next to where they slice the bread for you.

So do you think a grocery store brand extra virgin olive oil be ok? What words should I look for on the label. Someone said fruity how do I know it is fruity. I looked at food network and they said look for a yellow oil for a more buttery taste. Never thought this wold be so confusing. :goodvibes

Well just back from the grocery store. I bought bertolli extra virgin olive oil as it was on sale for $6.99 for the 500ml bottle. I also got McCormicks italian seasoning grinder. I figured I'd use that with some sea salt and parmesan cheese to dip the bread in. :thumbsup2

So now does anyone know where I can find some nice italian backround music to help with the italian resturant feel for our dining room. :goodvibes

Carapelli premium extra virgin for flavoring and dipping is great!! I disagree with above PP, I want to TASTE the olive oil-so I get extra virgin. I use light for cooking. And you can buy it at Walmart (SuperCenter) -not expensive at all.

I like fresh ground black pepper, fresh ground sea salt (or Kosher salt) and/or balsamic vinegar..Oh yum, now I am going to have to go out and get a nice loaf of crusty bread....;)

Any brand EVOO with a pinch of salt, fresh ground pepper and fresh finely grated parm!

Cook's Illustrated favorite EVOO is Columela Extra Virgin Olive Oil, not a supermarket brand but available in some supermarkets.

I like to use whatever evoo I have on hand, I don't buy any particular kind for dipping. I do like to add some Italian seasonings (I always have a mixture on hand that I get at the store, McCormick brand) and I will put the oil on one side of a small plate and on the other side I add the balsamic vinegar, dip in the oil and herbs, dab in the vinegar and YUM!! One of DBF's faves. :)
